The Intellectual Property Symposium, a joint effort of EE Times, Semiconductor Insights and Portelligent, is the first and only event to bring together the foremost legal, business and government minds to discuss the importance and logistics of properly protecting, managing and leveraging intellectual property.

The Evolution of the Intellectual Property Marketplace will be presented by Peter Detkin, Co-founder, Managing Director, Intellectual Ventures, and former Director, Intellectual Property, Intel, and Mike Meurer, Professor of Law, Boston University School of Law and noted author on the problems of the patent system. The presentation will include an overview of the intellectual property market with a special focus on technology, and a discussion on the inefficiencies and imbalances that have led to opportunities for a variety of new players.

Today’s Trends and Tomorrow’s Realities in the Intellectual Property Marketplace will be presented by Jon Dudas, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director, U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, who provides a rare perspective on recent Supreme Court decisions regarding intellectual property, proposed patent modernization legislation, and trends in intellectual property protection and enforcement around the world, including in China.

Commentary:
Rick Merritt, Editor-at-Large, EE Times

“We’ve found that there is a lack of comprehensive resources to educate technology and patent industry professionals on intellectual property, especially in embedded systems. With the Intellectual Property Symposium we are working to change that by offering a forum where professionals can go to learn about the key topics that influence their business. With the State Bar of California approving our content, our attendees will be able receive the continuing legal education credits they deserve for taking the initiative to come to the event and learn from experts on intellectual property law. This is a fantastic testament of the caliber of the event’s content and speakers. We are thrilled to announce this approval.”

InRetail 2008 will bring together retail design and management experts under one roof

The Middle East is in the midst of an unprecedented economic boom, and leading this surge is the retail sector. No other industry in the Arabian Gulf is expected to grow faster than the retail sector, and according to regional industry forecasts the sector is projected to exceed US$ 500 billion by 2010. The region currently enjoys 6 million square metres of retail space, with another 5 million under development and many more plans in the pipeline.

According to the latest Middle East survey by Retail International, Dubai leads the way in terms of density of shopping œfootage, making up more than 50% of the UAE’s sum total. It makes perfect business sense that Dubai is the venue of choice for InRetail, the region’s leading trade show for the design, fit-out and operational management of retail outlets, supermarkets and shopping malls in the Arabian Gulf.

The 2008 edition of this world-class event will be held from 8 to 10 June 2008 at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre, and will once again showcase the latest and best retail innovations featuring world renowned manufacturers alongside the region’s largest agents and distributors.

According to Ms. Paula Al Chami, Exhibition Director of the InRetail 2008 trade show, this is just the beginning of a bright future for the retail industry. “Over the next 5 years, the GCC will have more than 200 retail developments that will occupy in excess of 11 million square feet of retail space and accommodate more than 27,000 retailers she said. These are mind-boggling figures, and those associated with the industry have to stay up to date with the rest of the world if they wish to stay competitive. The transition to custom-designed shopping complexes across the region, together with the proliferation of branded store networks, has created an acute need for professionals to stay in touch with the latest trends and best practices in the industry added Ms. Chami.

InRetail 2008 will be a one-of-a-kind platform for those involved in the design, fit-out and operational management of retail outlets, supermarkets and shopping malls in the Arabian Gulf. The event will primarily focus on three major product sectors – shopfitting & visual merchandising, retail design & consultancy and supply chain management & technology. The exhibition will also feature the ‘Innovations in Retail 2008’ seminars, bringing together the most prominent international experts in the industry to help Gulf professionals remain up to date with the latest and the best, and deliver world-class retail design and management to the region.

Mr. Uthai Lohachitranond, President Elect of ASHARE Thailand Chapter commented, BMAM Expo Asia 2008 is a major event that can represent the latest technology about green concept and sustainability way for building owners, facilities managers, engineers and developers.

Building owners and managers are also looking forward to attend the exhibition. Mr. Paul Thomson, Chief of Facility Management of the UN in Bangkok said I will be sending quite a large section of our facilities and property management teams to see what we can learn from this event. Healthcare facility operator, Mr. Arthit Limpasarn from the Bangkok Hospital Group who manages a chain of hospital facilities in Thailand, added This event is indeed a must-visit international fair for facility engineers and owners from across the Asia region.

A highly informative conference is also being planned to be alongside the exhibition. Mr. Loy Joon How, General Manager of IMPACT Exhibitions Management Co., Ltd., the organizer of this event said “The conference will feature critical topics, issues, trends and technology facing the industry and educational tutorials for building and facility owners and operators to better understand the benefits and importance of proper building maintenance and asset management as the concept of facilities management is rather new for Asia.
