2011 edition: a great success and a key step for NFC mass-deployment

NFC World Congress has attracted over 1300 visitors and 520 conference delegates coming from over 60 countries. Immediately ranking as a world-class event, the congress has shown up more tangible products and solutions than ever before in any show while also pointing out a clear direction for the NFC ecosystem at the conference.

Nice – Sophia Antipolis, September 23rd, 2011 - Will the NFC World Congress have the same bright future as the “GSM World Congress” in the late eighties? Relatively speaking, the first edition of this conference and exhibition dedicated to the contactless business reminds of the early debuts of the main mobile industry event: excitement around the technology, tremendous perspectives of a change in our daily lives, untapped markets of billions citizens, new business models to build, big moves of industry giants while new players just emerge, the sun of the French Riviera… and a success beyond expectations.

Buzz on-site and online
Indeed the first edition of NFC World Congress has been a great success thanks to the quality of the speakers, to the technological lead shown by the exhibitors and the attendance in large number. As such, this event ranks immediately as worldwide-class one. In details, the figures speak for themselves: the Congress attracted nearly 2000 Exhibition visits, from 520 conference delegates and 700 visitors coming from 60 countries… 65 accredited journals from around the world came to report to the world on this new exciting technology. The Congress has also enjoyed a fantastic buzz around the globe, both in media and in the fast growing “NFC ecosystem”.

A key step for NFC future
In terms of content, the Congress has marked an important step in the NFC mass deployment process, not only by showing up more tangible products and solutions than ever before in any show (nearly 100 new demos), but also by pointing clear direction for the industry and overall the NFC ecosystem. At the conference, main stakeholders have made clear commitments to push forward large scale roll-outs. Among the outstanding speakers and keynotes, the Opening Session featured Anne Bouverot, Director General of the GSMA, Koichi Tagawa, NFC Forum Chairman along with Samsung, Gemalto, MasterCard and Orange’s respective NFC managers. The keynote of Dr. Akio Shiibashi, the man behind the SUICA system, attracted a large audience too.

Several important announcements have also been made, including Orange’s NFC rollout plans, Mastercard’s approach of the Google Wallet, Sonim’s first NFC handset… not to mention the first results of UK’s first commercial NFC service by Barclaycard and Orange, the first multi-bank NFC application in Turkey, new insights into Korean market…
The event also took place outside the Congress venue: the Nice Cityzi Tours, allowing to experience daily life use of NFC, has also met with success. Additional tours have been set up to satisfy the demand of the Congress participants.
