Talking Stories: combining tech and fun to teach reading
Technology in action at Education Week
Stories are still the most effective way to teach children to read and, at the same time, encourage them to become more hands-on with technology. The Talking Stories interactive programmes, already used in many schools around the country, have shown improvements of up to 71% in reading scores of Grade 1 learners over a period of two school terms.
Computer voice in four languages
Children reading a Talking Story can touch the text and pictures on a computer screen, which activates a voice in English, isiXhosa, Afrikaans or isiZulu. The developer of the Talking Stories software, Kathy McCabe, says every story comes with three interactive, fun reading activities. “Many have animated rewards for correct answers. Printable worksheets provide follow-up tasks. There are 64 graded stories across a variety of genres, providing for the different reading levels of individual learners.”
|Touch Me! Talking Stories in Action
Macmillan South Africa provides the back-up, reading books and wall charts to support the Talking Stories software at the schools. The software runs equally well on networks and individual workstations, laptops and interactive whiteboards; both in Windows and open-source environments.
The proof is in the stories!
Talking Stories are a huge hit with learners and teachers alike, and what’s more, statistics prove that it works. Says Kathy McCabe: “We hear a great deal of anecdotal evidence about improved reading levels, and we see huge jumps in the systemic test results of Grade 3 and Grade 6 learners at individual schools. One broad-based survey of 2000 Grade 1 learners in 26 schools, showed that over two school terms the learners exposed to the Talking Stories software improved their reading scores by 71% MORE than the control group!”
Taking Talking Stories home on your cell phone
Macmillan Talking Stories hope to partner with a cell phone operator to make this innovative technology and learning available on cell phones. Says Kathy McCabe: “Cell phone penetration in South Africa is almost 100%. People may not have books or computers in the home, but even in remote rural areas, they own cell phones! Why not use these powerful devices to promote a reading culture in the home? Kids love to use cell phones and they love stories! Our software is browser-based and simple in design. Very little would need to be done to make it cell-phone compatible.”

Expo Summit 2010 is all set to scale new heights this year around. After receiving an overwhelming response and 224 participants last year, Expo Summit 2010 is back with a bang. Scheduled to be held from June 4-5 at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi, this two- day conference intends to bring in more representation of the International stakeholders from the world exhibition fraternity. The highlight of the event is its encouraging number of participants. We are pleased to reveal that more than 300 participants ranging from exhibition organizers, booth fabricators, logistics companies and service providers from across the globe would be present at the Expo Summit 2010. What is most heartening is the fact that international associations from world over have expressed their keenness to be associated with this high profile event. Expo Summit 2010 is perhaps the only medium through which service providers are able to tap the entire Indian Exhibition Industry extensively that is growing at a very encouraging rate.
Undoubtedly, India holds a commanding position in the list of big and influential international organisers across the world. However, there are quite a few issues that need to be addressed in order to make India the next launch pad for Asia. While, the exhibition trade, globally had advanced to a larger extent, India continues to deal with issues related to stiff government policies and inappropriate venues. In order to ensure that India is indeed the potential hub of exhibitions across the world, it’s very important to adopt a unified stand over various issues of concern and match up the difference that the West has laid for us.
With Expo Summit’ 09, a foundation stone was laid for the Indian Exhibition Industry to build a strong ground that is recognised as an industry. The need to take a forward step in unifying the entire sector and to adopt a unified stand before the policy makers was felt. When Expo Summit’ 09 was taking shape, the industry felt that it would represent its strength and challenges before the policy makers sitting on the other side of the table. However, by the end of the summit, all the industry stake holders, including the policy makers and autonomous bodies came to the consensus that none of them were actually on the other side. Rather, they all were a part of a unique cycle and agreed to adopt a collective approach in the right direction to maintain the graph of augmentation, moving upwards! It was very heartening to witness the formal ‘discussion’ being transformed into a healthy ‘dialogue’! The challenge before Expo Summit, 2010 now is to start the second chapter of this dialogue!
Expo Summit 2010 will reinstate its objective to provide the required platform to the exhibition fraternity to stand together. To strengthen this pledge, Indian Exhibition Industry Association (IEIA) has also extended its unconditional support to the event. “The Indian exhibition industry has surely benefitted from the platform of Expo Summit being offered by Manch Communications. The association finds a definite synergy with the objective behind this event and will extend all possible support to the organizers to make it a grand success says Anil Arora, Hon’ Secretary, IEIA.
“We have started promoting the event in all possible ways to attract more international speakers and organizers who are eyeing on India to enter and set up their shops. We got an excellent response at UFI Asia Open seminar at Taipei with confirmations from industry stalwarts like Paul Woodward, Michael Duck and Mark Cochrane to speak at the summit. We would also attend UFI Middle East Open Seminar in Bahrain later this month to attract more delegates from that part of the world. We are committed to deliver a prolific experience to all Indian delegates in the summit says Anuj Mathur, Director, Manch Communications Pvt. Ltd.
Since its formal launch, Expo Summit, 2010 is drawing overwhelming response from various segments of exhibition industry. Some of the international organizations have begun to show keen interest in the event and have also expressed their willingness to be part of it! Litmus Meroform and RE Rogers India have extended their support in the capacity of Foundation Partners of the event. Roder HTS Hocker, the world leader in the tensile structures and Siddhartha Logistics, the new age logistics solution provider have come forward in the support of the event as Associate Sponsors. The event is well promoted by several online and print media covering the trade. Indiamart.com, goingtomeet.com, Events Venues and Avenues are contributing towards the event’s promotional activities.
“We invite all industry stakeholders to come and attend the two day conference and go back with a motivational approach towards their businesses. Indian companies will surely get a chance to boost their business by venturing with their international counterparts concluded Anuj Mathur.

Neoedge Pte. Ltd. recently announced plans of bringing in more telecom related events and expanding operations in the Middle East and North Africa in line with its vision to become Asia’s top conference producer of Telecom Events. At an interview during the formal launch of its third telecom event in Asia, Neoedge’s Project Manager and SPEX Head Vida Paz said her company’s plans to produce summits, trainings and workshops in the MENA region will be coming in the next five to six months.
“We hope to become the Telecom Conference of choice for the telecommunications world by offering the newest products and conference formats with the ample opportunity for learning, discussing and networking, said Paz.
Neoedge has chosen Singapore as its corporate headquarters in the Asia-Pacific region, where it plans to further grow operations in countries like South Africa, Japan and Dubai while maintaining its established presence in China and other parts of the region.
“Neoedge aims to fast track its investments in facilities, technologies and people, said Paz during a brief presentation during the launch.
The new location of the corporate office at Commerce Point Building at Raffles Place, Singapore was chosen because of its goal of expanding the company and likewise be at the central business district of the Lion City.
Notably, the third Telecom Event: Mobile Cloud Computing ASIA 2010 unveiled is one of the company’s most comprehensive product, having a line up of unequalled speakers and panelists. It also has a very interesting Pre-Conference Workshop to be led by Orange Scape and in collaboration with Microsoft, Google and Amazon Web Services. The conference will happen on the 14th-15th July at Carlton Hotel, Singapore.
Paz also disclosed details about other future conventions and workshops on SS7 and SIGTRAN in the MENA Region, but assured that Neoedge has been actively researching for other potential locations, including the United Kingdom, and would likely produce a new one before 2011.
Neoedge, which began operations in Singapore in 2008, currently has half a hundred active employees. Already, several slots in its new office are set to be occupied by incoming sales agents, marketing managers and conference producers. Recruitment, however, is still ongoing.
Paz was keen to point out that Neoedge emphasizes a learning culture built around simplicity aimed at fostering the professional growth of its employees. She pointed out that her current position as Project Manager for Telecom events came in only months after she joined as a senior sales executive, adding that such a case was not unusual in the company.
