Solid State Chemistry
Aug 30, 2009 - Sep 4, 2009,
Magdalen College Oxford, England United Kingdom

The synthesis of new solid materials is one of the basic tasks of Solid State Chemistry, and will constitute the principal topic of the 2009 GRC on “Solid State Chemistry”. In the field of synthesis, new achievements are allowing more control, and more targeted approaches that go beyond the classical “shake and bake” approaches and conventional precursor routes. Greater synthetic control can be gained by a variety of emerging approaches. These include effectively managing the boundary conditions during syntheses via ablation techniques, through deposition of solids from the gas phase, the use of low temperature techniques using solvents/fluxes, building block approaches or by employing extreme conditions with respect to temperature and pressure. For example, significant progress has been achieved in monitoring the initial stages of structure formation. However, there is still a long way to go for a full understanding and control of the relevant processes, which would be indispensable for running fully targeted materials syntheses.

14th Conference on Cold Regions Engineering
Aug 30, 2009 - Sep 2, 2009,
Duluth Entertainment Convention Centre, Duluth, Minnesota United States

The Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering of the American Society of Civil Engineers with participation of the Duluth Section of ASCE will sponsor its Fourteenth Conference on Cold Regions Engineering in Duluth, Minnesota at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.

How prolonged cold weather affects the ways civil engineers do their jobs is the driving force behind the theme for the conference, "Cold Regions Impacts on Research- Design-Construction." This theme encompasses all fields and sectors of engineering and includes cold regions issues in the "snow belt" states of the lower 48 as well as the traditional cold regions of Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia, and Europe.

With its Midwest location, the conference is a convenient area for the exchange of ideas and advancements in cold regions engineering technology by engineers in the northern United States, a group that does not often identify itself with their peers to the north. At the same time, the theme is broad enough to allow participation from engineers from all over the world. All are welcome and can make a contribution to a successful conference.
