17th General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union
Aug 2, 2009 - Aug 15, 2009,
Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro Brazil

This event is a unique opportunity for astronomers working in all fields of astronomy to come together. Besides the General Assembly per se with its administrative meetings, the scientific programme usually comprises 2 series of 3 Symposia of 3.5 days duration each, scheduled during the first and second weeks, respectively. During the 10-day period, a number of Joint Discussions are held, typically about 15-20 total, with up to 5 running in parallel. Special Sessions on specialized and timely topics are also organized.

Physical Metallurgy 2009
Aug 2, 2009 - Aug 7, 2009,
Proctor Academy Andover, New Hampshire United States

The aim of this Gordon Conference is to explore recent progress in use of computational materials models to unify the science and engineering of metallic materials. Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME), also known as Through Process Modeling, is a new and potentially transformational discipline within the materials profession and will form an essential part of this discussion. The topic of a 2008 US National Academy Study and a number of government and industry sponsored R&D programs, ICME involves the development and utilization of material models which capture fundamental insights and quantitative processing-structure-property relationships for use by the engineering community. Key advances in quantification of processing-microstructure and microstructure-property relationships of advanced structural alloys and thermal barrier coatings will be highlighted. Advanced computational techniques such as those linking ab initio calculations to phase equilibria and microstructure will be covered. Experimental activities are central to the development of quantitative processing-structure-property relationships and advanced experimental characterization tools will also be a focus. An aim of this conference is to foster a deep discussion advancing our understanding of the current capability and challenges for vertical integration of this knowledge and its application in aerospace, automotive, power generation and other industries. This conference is designed to benefit those on the forefront of development and application of computational materials models in industry and to those involved at the leading edge of computational and experimental materials science. Students are especially encouraged to attend. In addition to the program of invited presentations poster sessions are planned.

Mammalian Gametogenesis & Embryogenesis
Aug 2, 2009 - Aug 7, 2009,
Waterville Valley Resort Waterville Valley, New Hampshire United States

This is the 17th Gordon Conference on Mammalian Gametogenesis and Embryogenesis. This conference provides a unique and valuable opportunity for discussion and the exchange of ideas between clinicians devoted to delivering the most modern therapeutic approaches to their patients, and basic scientists who are examining the biological mechanisms that underlie normal and abnormal function of gametogenesis and embryogenesis. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the production of viable eggs and sperm and the initiation of embryonic development is essential for the continued survival of animal species in the 21st century and beyond. Advances in reproductive biology have immediate application on the treatment of human infertility and subfertility, in developing contraceptive methods and in novel approaches to wildlife preservation. Moreover, stem cells, pluripotent cells, gametes and early embryos provide important models for basic research aimed at understanding nuclear programming, cell cycle regulation, and transcriptional control mechanisms. The objective of the Conference is to provide a forum for the exchange of the latest advances in the field, as well as to promote discussion and debate by providing a relaxed setting that fosters interaction.

This conference will feature a program of the most active national and international researchers. Topics such as stem cell biology/therapy, assisted reproductive technologies, cloning, epigenetic reprogramming and systems biology, hold promise to be translated into significant new therapeutic approaches to treat diseases.

The session topics included in the meeting are the following: 1) Stem Cells: Germline and Embryonic; 2) sRNA in Gametogenesis and Embryogenesis; 3) Epigenetic Programming During Gametogenesis and Embryogenesis; 4) Environmental Impacts on Embryogenesis Development; 5) Integrated Genomics and Epigenetics Technology; 6) Gonadal Development and Sex Determination; 7) Gene Networks and Transcriptional Regulation; 8) Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Stem Cells; 9) Keynote Lectures.
