Cell-Cell Fusion 2009
Jul 19, 2009 - Jul 24, 2009,
Colby-Sawyer College New London, England, United Kingdom

Cell-cell fusion is a fundamental cellular event that is required for fertilization and development. It also seems to play a role in the evolution of some forms of cancer and in tissue repair by stem cells. While virus-cell fusion and the fusion of intracellular membranes have been the subject of intense investigation during the past decade, cell-cell fusion remains poorly understood. Given the importance of this cell-biological phenomenon, a number of investigators have begun serious analyses of the molecular mechanisms that mediate sperm-oocyte, myoblast-myoblast and macrophage-macrophage fusion. Recent genetic studies in yeast, Neurospora crassa, Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila are beginning to yield exciting results. Most recently, fusion of bone marrow-derived cells with somatic cells, such as hepatocytes, and of cells by inside-out (flipped) SNAREs have been reported. Cell fusion has recently emerged as an event central to development, organ repair and cancer metastasis. Thus, it is a subject that deserves greater attention and a field that will surely benefit from the cross-fertilization of ideas that is the hallmark of a Gordon Conference.

Lipids, Molecular & Cellular Biology Of
Jul 19, 2009 - Jul 24, 2009,
Waterville Valley Resort Waterville Valley, New Hampshire United States

The 2009 Gordon Research Conference on Molecular and Cellular Biology of Lipids will bring together leading scientists in the field to present and discuss their research on lipid metabolism. The meeting will continue a near 50-year tradition emphasizing the roles of lipids in health and disease. The meeting will include nine lecture sessions and four afternoon poster sessions. The lecture sessions will cover a broad range of topics, including regulation of lipid metabolism by nuclear receptors, bacterial lipid synthesis and catabolism, genetics of lipid metabolism, enzymes of lipid metabolism, trafficking of proteins and lipids, protein structure in the lipid bilayer, mammalian lipid metabolism, and lipid localization and membrane structure. The 37 speakers in these sessions will report research using a wide range of in vivo and in vitro biological systems and employing multiple experimental approaches. Lectures at this meeting are well known to stimulate lively discussions among attendees who in this case will include biochemists, structural biologists, cell biologists, and geneticists. Scientists who attend this conference derive synergistic benefit from the high quality of the speakers, the diverse experimental backgrounds of the participants, and the resplendent natural surroundings of the White Mountain National Forrest. These benefits in turn drive future advances in lipid metabolism. Participants and speakers will reflect international excellence in this medically-relevant area of science with an ideal balance between youth and wisdom.

Computer Aided Drug Design
Jul 19, 2009 - Jul 24, 2009,
Tilton School Tilton, New Hampshire United States

The Gordon Research Conference on Computer-Aided Drug Design, which began its life as the QSAR GRC, has been held every second year since the early 1970s. The conference brings together industrial, academic and government scientists working on computational simulation of ligands and their targets. Because computer-aided drug design covers a wide field of research, each conference focuses on topical areas of innovation and progress, supporting a dynamic atmosphere. A focus for the 2009 conference will on how computational and experimental methods inform each other in current research problems. Topics will include recent exciting advances in protein design and modeling, the role of water in modeling ligand-protein binding, understanding thermodynamics and kinetics of ligand binding, protein and ligand-based networks in biology and pharmacology, and the problems and opportunities presented by the chemical and biological spaces in which ligand design occurs. The CADD GRC continues to offer speakers and participants generous speaking and discussion periods. Discussion sessions are lively and controversy is welcomed; it is a condition of their invitation that speakers give talks on largely unpublished, cutting edge results.

Collagen 2009
Jul 19, 2009 - Jul 24, 2009,
Colby-Sawyer College New London, New Hampshire United States

The Collagen Gordon Research Conference has convened biennially for the last 38 years and will continue to present cutting-edge research on a wide range of topics on structure, biology and pathology of collagens and their ligands in development, tissue homeostasis and pathology. The meeting program reflects the complexity of the collagen genome, the diversity of the collagen proteome and its functions, variations that result from physiological alterations, and consequences of collagen mutations. The conference will continue to recognize the central roles of collagens in their macromolecular context in a wide variety of matrices in all organs and their instructive roles that govern cell functions, including stem cells. Special focus will be on recent developments on molecular and cell-based therapies of collagen diseases. The Conference will bring together investigators who are at the forefront of the field, and will provide opportunities for junior scientists and graduate students to present their work in poster format or short talks and exchange ideas with leaders in the field. All meeting attendees are encouraged to present their work in poster format at the meeting. There will be two poster sessions for this purpose. You are welcome to provide a title and bring a poster even if you did not submit an abstract at the time of application. The primary objective is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of recent contributions at the leading edge of the field.

Clusters, Nanocrystals & Nanostructures 2009
Jul 19, 2009 - Jul 24, 2009,
Mount Holyoke College South Hadley, Massachusetts United States

For over thirty years, this Gordon Conference has been the premiere meeting for the field of cluster science, which studies the phenomena that arise when matter becomes small. During its history, participants have witnessed the discovery and development of many novel materials, including C60, carbon nanotubes, semiconductor and metal nanocrystals, and nanowires. In addition to addressing fundamental scientific questions related to these materials, the meeting has always included a discussion of their potential applications. Consequently, this conference has played a critical role in the birth and growth of nanoscience and engineering.

The goal of the 2009 Gordon Conference is to continue the forward-looking tradition of this meeting and discuss the most recent advances in the field of clusters, nanocrystals, and nanostructures. As in past meetings, this will include new topics that broaden the field. In particular, a special emphasis will be placed on nanomaterials related to the efficient use, generation, or conversion of energy. For example, we anticipate presentations related to batteries, catalysts, photovoltaics, and thermoelectrics. In addition, we expect to address the controversy surrounding carrier multiplication with a session in which recent results addressing this phenomenon will be discussed and debated.
