19th IAGG World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics.
Jul 5, 2009 - Jul 9, 2009,
Palais des Congrès, Paris, Ile de France France

Every four years, the World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics represents a unique and irreplaceable event attended by experts from around the world to discuss the latest findings in the field of ageing. The 19th congress, which is taking place in Paris in 2009, is particularly important, as it coincides with an ideological u-turn. Lifespan extension and the growing number of elderly people, once considered as catastrophic, are now viewed as an indisputable progress.

Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory 2009
Jul 5, 2009 - Jul 10, 2009,
Colby-Sawyer College New London, New Hampshire United States

Time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) is an extension of density functional theory (DFT) to time-dependent problems, and can be viewed as an alternative formulation of time-dependent quantum mechanics. The use of TDDFT is increasing, and it is fast becoming one of the tools of choice to get accurate and reliable predictions for excited-state properties in solid state physics, chemistry and biophysics, both in the linear and non-linear regimes. This interest has been motivated by the recent developments of TDDFT (and time-dependent current functional theory) and include the description of photo-absorption cross section of molecules and nanostructures, electron-ion dynamics in the excited state triggered by either a small or high intense laser fields, van der Waals interactions, development of new functionals coping with memory and non-locality effects, applications to biological systems, transport phenomena, optical spectra of solids and low-dimensional structures (as nanotubes, polymers, and surfaces), etc.

The purpose and scope of this Gordon Research Conference is to provide a platform for discussing the current state of the art of the rapidly progressing, highly interdisciplinary field of TDDFT, to identify and debate open questions, and to point out new promising research directions. We plan to bring together scientists of different backgrounds, from chemistry and physics to biology and material science, in the unique intellectual environment provided by a Gordon Research Conference.

Nucleosides, Nucleotides & Oligonucleotides 2009
Jul 5, 2009 - Jul 10, 2009,
Salve Regina University Newport, Rhode Island United States

What makes us all the same and what makes us all different resides in our genetic material. Decoding of the chemical structure of DNA has led to a conceptual understanding of genetic processes. The sequence of DNA is the major storehouse for hereditary information, but epigenetic changes that result in silencing of genes is surfacing as a primary mechanism of modulating the genetic code. Similarly, interfering RNAs such as microRNAs also suppress or enhance this genetic information. The mutations arising from replication errors result in modulation of genome of a cell. These are addressed by the DNA repair processes that do proof-reading, excision or mismatch repairs. It is the goal of the GRC on Nucleosides, Nucleotides and Oligonucleotides (N2O) to aid investigators in learning about the newest developments relating to these fundamental actions in nucleic acid metabolism, as these processes provide a guideline to understand origin and treatment of diseases such as cancer, and viral infections.

While normal nucleosides result in DNA and RNA macromolecules, abnormal nucleosides have become the major class of therapeutics for cancer and viral diseases. Nucleoside analogues have been used for half a century but oligonucleotides are in an infancy stage for clinical use. Nonetheless, they are becoming tools for altering, silencing, and activating gene expressions that allow us to understand the cellular milieu and effect of each transcript or protein. Many revolutionary concepts involving specifically designed RNA and DNA oligonucleotides with novel functions have been shown to be useful in target validation and as new analytical and therapeutic agents. Challenges that were faced for delivery of these oligonucleotides resulted in a brand new field of transport and delivery including nanoparticles.

The 2009 N2O conference will focus on these aspects of nucleic acid. We are planning to have cutting-edge science that deals with nucleosides, nucleotides, and oligonucleotides as tools, as therapeutics, and as fundamentals of our genome.

Cellular Osmoregulation: Sensors, Transducers & Regulators 2009
Jul 5, 2009 - Jul 10, 2009,
University of New England Biddeford, Maine United States

The 2009 Gordon Conference on ‘Cellular Osmoregulation and Mechanotransduction’ will present cutting edge research on the molecular and cellular aspects of osmotic and mechanic stress in cells ranging from simple microbes to complex plant and mammalian systems. Mechanisms of osmosensing, signal transduction and cellular regulation will be presented from the biophysical and molecular (structural genomics) to the cellular (systems biology) perspective. As mechanotransduction is not only key to cellular osmostasis but also plays a role in human hearing and touch, and involves sensing of forces such as osmotic pressure, membrane stretch, vibration, and touch, these areas are included in the program. The Conference will bring together a collection of researchers who are at the forefront of their field, and will provide opportunities for junior scientists and graduate students to present their work in poster format and exchange ideas with leaders in the field. Some poster presenters will be selected for short talks. The collegial atmosphere of this Conference, with programmed discussion sessions as well as opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, provides an avenue for scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm and promote cross-disciplinary collaborations in the various research areas represented.

Biological Molecules In The Gas Phase 2009
Jul 5, 2009 - Jul 10, 2009,
Tilton School Tilton, New Hampshire United States

Cross disciplinary in nature, with emphasis on isolated biomolecules and biomolecular interactions, theory and experiment, this meeting will provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of frontier research on molecules of biological interest in the gas phase, and in solution. The past few years have witnessed remarkable advances in this field, revealing important properties of the building blocks of life that have heretofore been obscured by surrounding condensed phase environments. Our conference will put these results in perspective by comparing the properties of isolated molecules with their properties in the condensed phase, especially in solution. Following a brief tutorial on modern experimental methods in high resolution spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, the meeting will begin with a plenary lecture on "The Challenges that Lie Ahead" and continue with sessions devoted to noncovalent interactions, hydration, peptides and proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, energy transduction, carbohydrates, and biopolymers in cells. Each session will feature a discussion leader and three invited talks; one on spectroscopy, one on computational methods, and one on mass spectrometry, each focused on the central topic of the session. In this way, we will compare and contrast the experimental and theoretical methods, and what can be learned from the application of these very different techniques to similar systems. Additionally, a scientist working in the field will be assigned the role of “reflector” for the session, who will help all conferees put the talks in a biological perspective, and identify key future areas of interest in that field. “Hot Topics” and “Poster” Sessions also are planned. The meeting will therefore provide an opportunity for young scientists to grow and be stimulated by the discussion of future research activities in this interdisciplinary field.
