Deregulation of Transcription in Cancer
Jun 21, 2009 - Jun 26, 2009,
INEC-Ireland's National Events & Conference Centre Killarney, Kerry Ireland

Transcription is an intricate process that is regulated with exquisite specificity at both the genetic and epigenetic levels through such aspects as chromatin and core RNA polymerase machinery. Sophisticated mechanisms have been recently deciphered concerning how specific genes and pathways are deregulated in human cancers. Yet a great disparity exists between the nonspecificity of most cancer therapies and the advanced understanding of the basis for aberrant gene expression. This conference will focus on exploiting novel mechanistic information to generate more efficacious targeted therapies. Current insights into the mechanisms by which specific genes are deregulated in cancer, the resulting transcriptome signature for particular cancers and state-of-the-art therapeutic approaches using small molecules or RNA interference will be presented. The goals of this meeting are to facilitate the translation of basic knowledge to biomedical applications by bringing together those studying basic mechanisms with those developing new technologies or therapeutics.

Proteins 2009
Jun 21, 2009 - Jun 21, 2009,
Holderness School Holderness, New Hampshire United States

The Proteins Gordon Research Conference has established a rich history of bringing together experimental and computational biochemists, biophysicists and biologists who study the many aspects of proteins science, including protein structure, folding, function and dynamics. Recent Proteins GRC programs have reflected a current broad interest in the properties and function of proteins in the cellular environment. The 2009 Proteins GRC will continue this focus on post-reductionist protein science, but will also highlight the contributions of classical protein science.

Topics will include recent and unpublished results describing the chemical and physical basis of protein structure and interaction networks, in-cell visualization of proteins, the role of co-solutes in structure and stability, the functional consequences of structural heterogeneity, among others. Discussion leaders with a substantial history in this field will be invited to provide their own historical and scientific perspective on each session topic and presented results.

This conference will thus emphasize the field’s substantial knowledge about the physical and chemical properties of proteins, while encouraging the application of this knowledge to understand how proteins behave and function in their biological contexts. The diverse presentations of new science and historically-informed discussions will provide researchers at all levels - institutional and industrial research scientists, faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students - with a rigorous and comprehensive view of contemporary protein science.

Polymers
Jun 21, 2009 - Jun 26, 2009,
Mount Holyoke College South Hadley, Massachusetts United States

The Polymers 2009 conference assembles an international community for the presentation of recent advances in polymer synthesis, physical characterization, and performance in several complementary emerging technologies. Polymers continue to enable many emerging technologies including tissue regeneration, drug and gene delivery, biomedical technologies, alternate energy, smart surfaces and interfaces, and electro-active devices. In most instances, these technologies require responsive polymers, and polymer design for intelligent response to external stimuli represents an exciting frontier. Lectures dealing with self-healing and shape memory will identify critical design parameters. There is an over-arching need for these technological solutions of the future to also adhere to the principles of earth sustainability. Recent advances in ionic liquids and agricultural based feed stocks are extending performance and decreasing our dependence on petroleum-based monomers. This conference will present recent advances in the design of multifunctional polymers, including both synthetic and biological systems. Supramolecular chemistry including the investigation of electrostatic interactions, multiple hydrogen bonding, and metal-ligand interactions will be described. Moreover, the conference will provide mechanisms for professional networking through evening poster sessions and the participation of industrial, national laboratory, and academic scientists and engineers. The program also will ensure an integration of polymer design with recent advances in polymer characterization techniques with a focus on morphological structure and correlation of structure with properties and performance.

28th Society of Toxicologic Pathology Annual Symposium
Jun 21, 2009 - Jun 25, 2009,
Marriott Wardman Park Washington, Distr. Columbia United States

The 2009 STP Symposium will cover the broad topic of “Cancer” in animals and humans. Cancer is a major cause of death in humans throughout the world. Cancer involves all organ systems and has many etiologies including chemicals, viruses and irradiation but also has many important modifying factors such as genetics and diet. Cancer is the endpoint of a multistage process which begins as focal hyperplastic lesions and progresses, often through benign neoplasia, to malignant neoplasia. Toxicologic pathologists are often involved in studies involving tumors as an endpoint, including basic cancer research, studies with genetically engineered mice, and toxicology and carcinogenicity assays for safety assessment of chemicals. This symposium will cover various aspects of cancer: human cancer, cancer biology, mechanisms of carcinogenesis, regulation of carcinogens, use of genetically engineered mice for carcinogenesis bioassays, and tumor pathology. Continuing education courses on cancer drug development and other subjects with the Saturday NTP session, which will emphasize tumor pathology, will round out the Symposium on Cancer.

19th World Congress of Sexual Health
Jun 21, 2009 - Jun 25, 2009,
Göteborg Convention Centre, Göteborg, Sweden

The conference theme, Sexual Health & Rights: A Global Challenge, reflects the 8 priorities of the WAS Declaration for the Millennium and echoes the urgent need for action to ensure sexual health and rights for all. The WAS Congress is held every two years, and brings together the outstanding clinicians, researchers, educators, activists and policy makers from around the globe to share knowledge on the diverse and often controversial issues of contemporary sexual health. Sweden has always played a pioneering role in promoting sexual education, health and equality. Furthermore, a grant from the Swedish Government will enable participants to attend from many developing countries where the AIDS crisis severely impacts sexual health, and where basic sexual rights in areas such as education, healthcare and individual choice are largely unrecognized. The lively city of Göteborg is the largest harbor in Scandinavia and offers everything you would expect to find in a major city: cultural events, historical and natural landmarks, beautiful parks, fine restaurants, shopping and entertainment.
