ISA Research Committee on Family Research Seminar
Jun 15, 2009 - Jun 17, 2009,
Villa Grande on the Bygdøy penincula, Oslo Norway

The CFR seminar 2009 will be held in Oslo, Norway with the theme Families and Memories June 15 to 17, 2009. The seminar is a co-arrangement between Oslo University College and the Center for Studies of Holocaust and Religious Minorities (HL-center) and will take place at Villa Grande on the Bygdøy penincula – the museum area in Oslo. Villa Grande which now hosts the HL-center was the perpetrator Vidkun Quisling’s private estate during the war.

Families construct memories as well as memories constitute families. Each family member creates different stories and biographical narratives. At the same time these stories are related to each other and there is a collectiveness in the memory-making within a family. Memories are crucial both for the development of individual and collective identities, and they are framed by discourses such as national master narratives.

3rd International Conference on Computational Methods in Marine Engineering (Marine 2009)
Jun 15, 2009 - Jun 17, 2009,
Trondheim, Norway

The increasing activity worldwide in many areas of marine engineering has brought in the necessity of new ideas and methods which can effectively provide accurate numerical solutions in affordable times.

The objectives of the Marine 2009 conference are to present and discuss state of the art, mathematical models, numerical methods and computational techniques for solving problems in the field of marine engineering. Emphasis will be given to showing the potential of new computational methods for solving practical marine engineering problems of industrial interest.

The first edition of these series of conferences was held on 27-29 June 2005 in Oslo, Norway and the second one on 5-7 June 2007 in Barcelona, Spain. Both editions attracted some 100 participants.

The conference goal is to make a step forward in the formulation and computational solution of marine engineering problems accounting for all the complex couplings involved in the physical description of the problems.

EOS Conference on Manufacturing of Optical Components
Jun 15, 2009 - Jun 17, 2009,
ICM - International Congress Centre Munich Munich, Bayern Germany

This conference is organized by the European Optical Society and is part of the upcoming World of Photonics Congress, co-located with the LASER.World of Photonics Exhibition.

Synopsis: Growth markets like life sciences, health care and the agri-food, solar-energy and semiconductor industries show a high developmental momentum. For each of these markets, optical technologies play a crucial and sometimes enabling role. Accompanied by this, the importance of sophisticated optical components continues to grow. In the same way, new and innovative fabrication processes become more and more necessary to guarantee that the optics sector maintains its growth and advancements.

The EOS Conference on Manufacturing of Optical Components will give an overview of the state-of-the-art of fabrication technologies, and will provide, among other things, an international platform for discussing manufacturability of optical components as well as ongoing scientific research projects and, last but not least, future trends and prospective developments.

Sub-conferences will be:

- Precise Optics Fabrication
- Micro-optics and Structured Surface Technologies
- High Volume Manufacturing of Optical Components
- Metrology of Advanced Optics (This is a joint session between EOS and SPIE Europe)

SIAM Conference on Mathematical & Computational Issues in the Geosciences (GS09)
Jun 15, 2009 - Jun 18, 2009,
Liepzig Kubus Conference Center, Leipzig, Sachsen Germany

From points of view ranging from science to public policy, interest in modeling and simulation of geosystems and their applications. Some examples include petroleum exploration and recovery, underground waste disposal and cleanup of hazardous waste, earthquake prediction, weather prediction, and global climate change. Such modeling is fundamentally interdisciplinary; physical and mathematical modeling at appropriate scales, physical experiments, mathematical theory, probability and statistics, numerical approximations, and large-scale computational algorithms all have important roles to play.

This conference facilitates communication between scientists of varying backgrounds and work environments facing similar issues in different fields, and provides a forum in which advances in parts of the larger modeling picture can become known to those working in other parts. These kinds of interactions are needed for meaningful progress in understanding and predicting complex physical phenomena in the geosciences.
