Basically mesh networks guarantee the connectivity through a multihop wireless backbone formed by stationary routers. There is no differentiation between uplink and downlink, but performance depends on the routing protocols. There are several challenging issues for properly exploiting wireless mesh networks' features, such as fast-link quality variation, channel assignments, performance, QoS-routing, scalability, slow/high speed mobile users, service differentiation, and others.
