OPTI 2009 - Eleventh International Conference on Optimum Design of Structures and Materials in Engineering

The objective of this meeting is to communicate recent developments in advanced types of structures, particularly those based in new concepts and new types of materials resulting in optimum solutions.

Particular emphasis will be placed on computational methods to model, control and manage new structural solutions and material types. This integration of their design together with optimisation technologies is prevalent in all aspects of industry and research.

The Conference aims to attract papers describing case studies in engineering and considering static, dynamic analysis and damage tolerance. Manufacturing and structural protection issues are going to be discussed as well as papers on emergent applications in fields such as biomechanics. Contributions on numerical methods and different optimisation techniques are also welcome as well as papers on new software. Optimisation problems of interest to the meeting involve those related to size, shape and topology or material properties.

3rd International Conference on Computational Methods for Coupled Problems in Science and Engineering (Coupled Problems 2009)

The increasing necessity to solve complex problems in science and engineering accounting for all the coupling occurring on the different scales of the problem requires the development of new ideas and methods which can effectively provide accurate numerical solutions in affordable computing times.

The objective of Coupled Problems 2009 is to present and discuss state of the art, mathematical methods, numerical methods and computational techniques for solving coupling problems of multidisciplinary character in science and engineering. Emphasis will be given on showing the potential of new computational methods for solving practical multidisciplinary problems of industrial interest.

Previous editions on the conference were held in the Island of Santorini, Greece (2005) and Ibiza, Spain (2007), Coupled Problems 2007 attracted some 180 participants. The goal of COUPLED PROBLEMS 2009 is to make a step forwards in the formulation and solution of real life problems with a multidisciplinary vision accounting for all the complex couplings involved in the physical description of the problem.

This rapidly changing and challenging business environment requires us to find a balance between traditional and new approaches: conventional oil and gas along with deep and tight gas, more unconventional resources and renewable resources and at the same time, finding innovative solutions to control greenhouse gas emissions.

UAV’09, federated with CAD'09, is not just another conference; its main focus is on information exchange, sharing of experiences, observations, as well as difficulties among scientists, engineers, researchers and practitioners dealing with Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).

As such, the main objective of UAV'09 is to bring together different groups of qualified representatives from academia, industry, the private sector, government agencies like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Department of Defense (DoD), the Armed Forces, funding agencies, state and local authorities to discuss the current state of UAS advances, the anticipated roadmap to their full utilization in military and civilian domains, but also present current obstacles, barriers, bottlenecks and limitations to flying autonomously in civilian space. Of paramount importance is to define needed steps to integrate UAS into the National Airspace System (NAS). Therefore, UAS risk analysis assessment, safety, airworthiness, definition of target levels of safety, desired fatality rates and certification issues are central to the Symposium objectives.

Animal Cell Culture Methods and Scale-Up Strategies

This introductory course emphasizes cell culture and
scale-up theory, as well as an introduction to laboratory techniques utilized in animal cell culture. These include modern techniques used with mammalian cell culture from frozen stocks to inoculation and cultivation in bench top bioreactors. Lectures provide the background to understand the principles of cell culture and bioreactor design. Participants will gain experience with a variety of bioreactor systems, including stirred tank bioreactors, microcarrier and hollow fiber systems. The course covers mammalian and insect cell culture systems and is highly recommended for those who want to learn cell line propagation, characterization, and quality control, and be introduced to the complex issues of scale-up of cell culture from the research bench to larger reactors.

Approximately 50% of the time is spent in lecture and 50% is in the laboratory.
