Wuhan, Hubei China

The Sixth International Symposium on Neural Networks (ISNN 2009) will be held in Wuhan during May 26-29, 2009, following the successes of previous events. Composed of three parts (Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang), Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province in central China with a long history and rich heritages. During the warrior-states period (481-221 BC), Wuhan is a part in Chu Kingdom It began to prosper as a commercial town about two-thousand years ago, when it was called Yingwuzhou (Parrot beach). During the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), the region became one of the most prosperous commercial centers along the Yangtze River. By the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-164 AD), Hankou was one of the four most famous cities in China. Today, Wuhan is an educational and industrial center and a hub of water and rail transportation in China.

ISNN 2009 aims to provide a high-level international forum for scientists, engineers, and educators to present the state of the art of neural network research and applications in related fields. The symposium will feature plenary speeches given by world renowned scholars, regular sessions with broad coverage, and special sessions focusing on popular topics.

Prospective authors are invited to contribute high-quality papers to ISNN 2009. In addition, proposals for special sessions within the technical scopes of the symposium are solicited. Special sessions, to be organized by internationally recognized experts, aim to bring together researchers in special focused topics.

Sustainable Development: A Challenge for European Research
May 26, 2009 - May 28, 2009,
Brussles, Belgium

One of the rationales for and purpose of funding R&D on the EU budget is to serve EU policy needs, while strengthening the scientific and technological basis of the European industry and reinforcing its competitiveness. In view of the strong political will expressed by the European Council to engage on a sustainable path and the priority given to climate change and clean energy, European research is bound to contribute to sustainable development.

Putting European R&D at the service of sustainable development is also needed from a societal point of view. Indeed, there is rising concern about the relationship between science and society. Today's surveys show that Europeans have become less attracted by science or less confident that science brings solutions. If the level of public funding for research is to be maintained and indeed increased, it must be ensured and demonstrated that research is bringing value to the citizens, on substantial and tangible issues beyond competitiveness and jobs.

Coming close to mid-term of FP7 implementation, this 3-day conference will take stock of the progress made so far and identify ways and means for putting the European research system at the service of sustainable development.

With this in mind, the conference will initiate a structured dialogue on how to reform European research to best respond to sustainable development challenges. It will also investigate ways for improving the science-policy link and the relationship between science and society.

Venue
WasteTech-2009 will be held 26-29 May 2009 in Pavilion #3, Hall 13 of the International Exhibition Center Crocus Expo (www.crocusexpo.ru). Estimated exhibition space - about 8000 sq.m.
Overview
The top position of WasteTech as the ultimate leader of environmental events has been confirmed by the previous exhibition taking place in the early summer 2007. 402 exhibitors, including 143 international ones, is a worthy figure for any show. But for a developing market as environmental technologies in Russia this figure is almost unique.

For already ten years this event demonstrates a biennual growth of 30-50%. This shows the dynamic development of the environmental technologies market in Russia which is at the moment just in a starting position and has a lot of potential in the nearest future. The everyday practice of the industrially developed countries shows that the raise of this sector is a matter-of-course or inevitable.
