SIAM Conference on Applications of Dynamical Systems (DS09)
May 17, 2009 - May 21, 2009,
Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort Snowbird, Utah United States

The application of dynamical systems theory to areas outside of mathematics has proven to be an exciting and fruitful endeavor. These applications are highly diverse and interdisciplinary, ranging over such fields as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Finance, and Industrial Mathematics. This conference strives to achieve a good mixture of applications and the mathematics that informs them. The goals of the meeting are a cross-fertilization between the different fields of the applications, and increased communication between the mathematicians who build the theory and the scientists who use it.

World Environmental & Water Resources Congress 2009
May 17, 2009 - May 21, 2009,
Kansas City Marriott Downtown Kansas City, Missouri United States

The World Environmental & Water Resources Congress is an important annual opportunity for the best minds at work in environmental and water fields to convene and focus on topics of the day. This Congress’ central theme is the great rivers of the world and the engineering challenges of balancing environmental and development issues while achieving a sustainable future. It is imperative that those working on the front lines – at the environmental/water engineering nexus – share insights from research and practical experience in the field to generate best practices for the future on issues such as river system management, environmental issues, watershed management and restoration, dam safety, hydraulic structures, and so much more.

Dendrites: Molecules, Structure & Function
May 17, 2009 - May 22, 2009,
Il Ciocco Hotel and Resort Lucca, Barga Italy

Dendrites are in many ways the workhorse of the brain. They receive and integrate thousands of synaptic inputs from other nerve cells. Although dendrites were discovered over a century ago, there has been a dramatic resurgence of interest in these remarkable and highly complex structures. This has led to exciting new discoveries on many aspects of dendrites, spurred by recent technical developments - including advances in imaging, electrophysiology, and molecular biology. As a consequence, dendrites are now viewed as a field of study in and of themselves, and promise to unite and shed new light on disparate fields such as membrane trafficking, synaptic and intrinsic plasticity, and neuronal excitability. This Gordon Conference will crystallize the latest developments in dendritic research, from their morphology and development, through to their electrical and computational properties. The conference should be of interest to all researchers and students in neuroscience, as well as anyone who is interested in how the brain works.

CALPHAD 2009
May 17, 2009 - May 22, 2009,
Hotel Pyramida Prague Czech Republic

The design of industrial processes requires reliable thermodynamic data. CALPHAD (Computer Coupling of Phase Diagrams and Thermochemistry) aims to promote computational thermodynamics through development of models to represent thermodynamic properties for various phases which permit prediction of properties of multicomponent systems from those of binary and ternary subsystems, critical assessment of data and their incorporation into self-consistent databases, development of software to optimize and derive thermodynamic parameters and the development and use of databanks for calculations to improve understanding of various industrial and technological processes. This work is disseminated through the CALPHAD journal and its annual conference. Contributions of high quality in these and related fields, especially the fields of first-principles calculations, experimental measurements of thermochemical and phase equilibrium data, phase transformations, and the process and materials designs that the CALPHAD works are based on or used for, are welcome.
