Region, Religion and Early Modern Literature
Apr 2, 2009 - Apr 2, 2009,
Institute of English Studies, University of London London, England United Kingdom

The first decade of the twenty-first century has witnessed an explosion of interest in religious texts and communities among scholars of early modern literature. While this is in part a reaction to global politics – religious politics have been in the media spotlight for the best part of the decade – the intensity of the interest also derives from more local concerns, from a professional dissatisfaction with the failure of earlier generations of historicist critics to illuminate fully the relationship between religion and literature in the early modern period.

This one- day conference aims to build on this renewed interest in early modern religion, to explore the significance of ‘regional’ religious and/or textual communities in early modern Britain and Ireland. Papers are sought which address the conference themes, although contributions will be particularly welcome which focus on any of the following: the development of sectarian identities and/or religious intolerance; the relationship between the ‘religious’ and the ‘secular’; the network of discourses surrounding religion, ethnicity and culture which emerge in the early modern period and/or their links with contemporary issues; the regional context of both canonical writers and lesser-known texts and communities; the political/ intellectual implications of critical/historical methodology.

Languages of Politics: Mapping Britain's Long Nineteenth Century
Apr 2, 2009 - Apr 4, 2009,
Van Mildert College, Durham University Durham,, England, United Kingdom

Recent years have seen a proliferation of writings on British political thought, language and discourse between 1776 and 1914. This conference seeks to build upon existing work to produce a more integrated picture of political discourse in Britain's long nineteenth century. Historians have identified a litany of political languages available to and propagated by political actors in the period, but the relationships between these discourses remain under-specified. Disciplinary histories have detailed developments in the law or religion, but the relative significance of these domains demands further scrutiny. Revisionism about the character of nineteenth century political language has not been matched by attention to issues of chronology.

This conference aims to explore these issues in depth and to construct a more holistic account of the languages of politics in Britain's long nineteenth century. The intention is to map out the various ideological traditions that shape nineteenth-century political debate, and look again at their relative strengths, and the relationships between them. Particular attention will also be devoted to examining the relationship between politics and key discourses such as religion, law and political economy.

Common Mechanisms in Arrhythmias and Heart Failure
Apr 2, 2009 - Apr 7, 2009,
Keystone Resort Keystone, Colorado United States

Electrical and mechanical disturbances in heart function underlie most cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Investigations into the causes of cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure have led to considerable improvements in diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. Recent advances uncovering the molecular genetic basis for familial cardiomyopathy and inherited arrhythmia susceptibility have fueled greater interest in defining common pathophysiological mechanisms. This Keystone Symposia meeting will bring together experts in both fields to exchange ideas and explore common areas of interest. Major areas of emphasis for the symposium will include genetic mechanisms, electrical and transcriptional remodeling, regulation and disorders of cardiac ion homeostasis, and the complex interplay between molecules governing electrical and contractile events in the heart. The goal of this meeting is to stimulate new areas of investigation at the interface between the biology of heart rhythm and contraction, ideally leading to new therapeutic strategies and targets.
