- Extrinsic Control of Tumor Genesis and Progression
-
Mar 15, 2009 - Mar 20, 2009,
Fairmont Waterfront Vancouver, British Columbia CanadaIt has long been known that the interactions between cells and their respective microenvironments are instructive and necessary in proper development. Cell-environment interactions play complex roles in organ homeostasis and, when altered, disease. Increasing evidence now suggests that the microenvironment also modulates critical aspects of the genesis and progression of tumors. For example, initiation, progression and even control of metastasis and latency are governed by these interactions. This modulation is most likely brought about through both genetic and epigenetic mechanisms. Currently, the signaling pathways and mechanisms of regulation are mostly unknown. This conference will bring together leaders in this field to discuss current problems and strategize on the clinical application of new insights.

- Cardiac Disease: Development, Regeneration and Repair
-
Mar 15, 2009 - Mar 20, 2009,
Grove Park Inn Asheville, North Carolina United StatesCardiac muscle death, without numerically equivalent myocyte creation, poses a formidable and inexorable challenge in both acute and chronic forms of heart disease. A regenerative medicine approach to rescue cardiac muscle cell number or instigate heart repair in other ways has moved from the esoteric fringe to the mainstream of both fundamental and patient-based cardiovascular research. However, notwithstanding the encouraging results from phase I and even phase II trials in this realm, the scientific foundations of cardiac repair largely remain to be proven on a basis that is more than empirical. By virtue of its orientation not merely to translation, but at least equally to the enabling sciences within stem cell biology, cardiovascular development, and genetics, this Keystone Symposia meeting addresses a critical unmet need in a high-impact field of current and foreseeable explosive growth.

- Chemical Senses: Receptors and Circuits
-
Mar 15, 2009 - Mar 19, 2009,
Granlibakken Resort Tahoe, California United StatesThe goal of this Keystone meeting is to bring together both pioneers and newcomers to the neurobiology of the chemical senses to discuss the development and function of neuronal circuits that underlie the perception of odorants, tastants, and pheromones. In the decade since the identification of molecular receptors for chemosensory stimuli, the field is increasingly moving toward questions of how sensory circuits are assembled during development and how they function in mediating chemosensory perception. Researchers are elucidating the molecules and mechanisms that pattern connections from the periphery to the brain. Using electrophysiological and imaging techniques, information processing is being studied mostly at the periphery. However, there is little information about how information is propagated from lower pathways to the cortex (or equivalent) and other higher brain regions. This meeting will highlight recent results using developmental, electrophysiological, functional imaging, and behavioral approaches to elucidate how chemosensory signals are processed in invertebrate and vertebrate model systems, ranging from nematode, fruit fly, zebrafish, mouse, rat, non-human primate to human.

- Polar Marine Science 2009
-
Mar 15, 2009 - Mar 20, 2009,
Il Ciocco Hotel and Resort Lucca, Barga ItalyThe 2009 Gordon Research Conference will take place directly following the 2007-2009 International Polar Year (IPY), which has been one of the most significant internationally coordinated efforts yet undertaken in polar research. Many of the IPY campaigns have concentrated on marine sciences, and this conference will seek to capture the excitement of the polar marine science discoveries that have resulted from IPY research over the last two years. These results will provide a stimulus for discussing the directions that polar marine science might take in the coming years. It has become increasingly apparent than ever before that for Polar Marine Science to move forward, traditional disciplinary research boundaries must be crossed. To this end we aim to have speakers representing as many disciplines of marine science as possible, working in both the Arctic and Southern Oceans. The effects of climate change are anticipated to form a considerable part of the discussions. It is envisioned that recent changes as well as new findings from paeleo-studies will be discussed in the context of the geological history of the regions. Poster sessions will provide an opportunity for lively and informal discussion, in counterpoint to the more formal oral sessions. These poster sessions and related discussions will provide a forum for presentation of the latest results, seeding of new ideas and establishment of new collaborations. The overarching conference goal will be to bring together marine scientists from wide ranging disciplines for discussion of future research pathways within a cross-disciplinary context in order to better understand the implications of large-scale marine dynamics in the polar regions.

- Glial Biology: Functional Interactions Among Glia & Neurons 2009
-
Mar 15, 2009 - Mar 20, 2009,
Four Points Sheraton / Holiday Inn Express Ventura, California United StatesThe broad and long-term goal of the conference is to increase our understanding of the manner in which glial cells interact with one another and with neurons during normal brain function and in neurological diseases. The biology of astrocytes and microglial cells, more than that of oligodendrocytes, is emphasized in this meeting. Leaders in the field will discuss critical areas of glial research. The program will have nine sessions that broadly address glia cell involvement in synaptic structure and function, neurogenesis, brain energy metabolism, cerebral blood flow, and some neurological diseases including tumors and stroke. In addition, two poster sessions will permit all participants to contribute to discussion of these topics. The health relatedness of this meeting is that glial cells participate in many, possibly all, neurological diseases. Discussions about current research will advance our understanding of glial cells in both health and disease. In addition, specific presentations at this conference will focus on the involvement of glial cells in brain development, tumor formation and spread, normal and deranged energy metabolism (e.g., stroke and hypoglycemia) and control of cerebral blood flow.

- Cell Biology Of Megakaryocytes & Platelets 2009
-
Mar 15, 2009 - Mar 20, 2009,
Hotel Galvez Galveston, Texas United StatesThe Gordon Research Conference on the Cell Biology of Megakaryocytes and Platelets is the premier scientific meeting focused on the biology of megakaryocytes and the platelets that arise from them. This will be the 3rd biennial meeting that was first organized by Steve Watson and Jon Frampton in 2005 to bring together two groups of scientists with complimentary goals and interests.
Our proposed meeting will focus on state-of-the-art advances in transcriptional regulation of hematopoietic stem cell differentiation into the megakaryocyte lineage, unique biological events of platelet formation, pharmacological advances in regulating these processes, and signaling events regulating platelet function in hemostasis, thrombosis and inflammation. An opening session will focus on the application of new technologies to megakaryocytes and platelets. Three sessions will consider megakaryocyte generation, including roles of new genes, lineage specific gene activation, platelet biogenesis, and advances in thrombopoietin-based therapies. Three sessions will also be devoted to vascular signals that activate platelets, including mechanisms of differential granule release, new roles for receptors and new signaling molecules, and platelet contributions to inflammatory diseases. “Hot topics” sessions will allow junior and senior investigators to present short oral reports. Four poster sessions will also be scheduled, giving junior and senior investigators an effective forum to network and exchange ideas. A closing session will include special guests who will speak on topics of interest to both megakaryocyte and platelet researchers. - full details
