SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE09)
Mar 2, 2009 - Mar 6, 2009,
Miami Hilton Hotel Miami, Florida United States

Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E) is now widely accepted, along with theory and experiment, as a crucial third mode of scientific investigation and engineering design. Aerospace, automotive, biological, chemical, semiconductor, and other industrial sectors now rely on simulation for technical decision support. For government agencies also, CS&E has become an essential support for decisions on resources, transportation, and defense. Finally, in many new areas such as medicine, the life sciences, management and marketing (e.g. data- and stream mining), and finance techniques and algorithms from CS&E are of growing importance.

CS&E is by nature interdisciplinary. It grows out of physical applications and it depends on computer architecture, but at its heart are powerful algorithms. Much of CS&E has involved analysis, but the future surely includes optimization and design, especially in the presence of uncertainty. Another mathematical frontier is the assimilation of very large data sets through such techniques as adaptive multiresolution, automated feature search, and low-dimensional parameterization.

SIAM is conducting this conference on CS&E to draw attention to the tremendous range of major computational efforts on large problems in science and engineering, to promote the interdisciplinary culture required to meet these large-scale challenges, and to encourage the training of the next generation of computational scientists

Lean Logistics & Distributions
Mar 2, 2009 - Mar 3, 2009,
Singapore

In today’s fast-paced industry where competition is stiff and expectations are high, companies are constantly looking at achieving growth and profit through quick fixes, outsourcing and downsizing. While this may provide temporary relief, it does not promise continuous long-term success. In fact, it could do more harm than good.

Lean logistics and distributions eliminate non-value-adding operations, equipment, and resources by enhancing value for a longer, Leaner and more lucrative run. It is therefore the right way to go, as all industries are badly affected by the current economic slowdown and recession, hence looking forward to cost savings in order to stay alive in business. With a Lean operation where all ‘fat’ would be cut down, companies become more productive, active and resourceful. This in turn will enhance value whilst reducing waste. With Climate Change high on the agenda in most board meetings, this is a welcome relief too.

In the past it has been assumed that Lean can only be applied to manufacturing processes alone. This is far from the truth, as it can actually be applied globally for various industries such as oil and gas, banking or financial services, healthcare, and so on. Deploying Lean principles often improves safety, quality, on-time delivery and cost thus enhancing the productivity of an organisation. A Lean environment requires dedication from all team members and understands that the path to perfection is a never-ending journey.

Category Management
Mar 2, 2009 - Mar 3, 2009,
Johannesburg, Gauteng South Africa

Category Management is a retailing concept in which a total range of products sold by a retailer is broken down into groups of similar or related products example Bokomo and Kellogg’s, these groups are known as categories. Other examples include: Tinned fish, washing detergents, toothpastes. Each category is then run as a ‘mini business’ with it’s own right and it’s own set of turnover and profitability targets. An important facet of category management is the shift in relationship between retailer and supplier, this relationship moves to one of collaboration, exchange of information and data and joint business building.

The focus of all negotiations is centered among the effects of the turnover of the total category, not just the sales on the individual products therein. Suppliers are expected, indeed in many cases, mandated to only suggest product introductions, a new planogram or promotional activity if it is expected to have a beneficial effect on the turnover or profit of the total category and be beneficial to the shoppers of that category.

Is a concept that was initiated and commonly found in Grocery but now also found in retail sectors such as: DIY, Cash and Carry, Pharmacy/Drugstore and even book retailing.

Category Management is a process that involves managing product categories as business units and customizing them to satisfy customer needs.

Waste Management for Heavy Industry
Mar 2, 2009 - Mar 3, 2009,
Johannesburg, Gauteng South Africa

According to the waste management hierarchy, the first approach to waste management is prevention and minimization. Implementation of a cleaner technology and waste minimization strategies within Southern Africa will contribute to maintaining any country’s competitiveness position in the technological market place.

Until today, focus has been on quantitative aspects of waste management: Waste minimization and increased recycling. In the future, industries will need to focus on qualitative targets: the increase of the quality of waste treatment and to stop the generation of waste from source. For this, there will be less impact from environmental contaminants and a better utilization of resources in waste. An integrated waste management strategy will help in the protection of human health and the environment and to develop resources in a sustainable manner.

The workshop will present strategic tools and principles that will enable the private sector to better understand their responsibilities, with their industries, towards the protection of the environment. It will provide delegates with a clear understating of the current issues on cleaner production (waste minimization) and waste management around the world and also examining local challenges, establishing a waste minimization programme in organisations and ensuring that it works for both their business and the environment.
