Genome Instability and DNA Repair
Mar 1, 2009 - Mar 6, 2009,
Taos Convention Center Taos, New Mexico United States

DNA damage repair and the DNA damage response overall are critical to the organism for both tumor suppression and the propagation of genomic information to subsequent generations. Tremendous advances have occurred in the last several years which have enlightened our understanding of the DNA damage response in all organisms and the derivation of genomic rearrangements, including in mouse and human. This meeting will highlight recent advances. Programmed DNA damage and its repair will be presented in sessions on the immune system and meiosis and germ cell development. Mechanisms of DNA repair will be presented in sessions on homologous recombination and non-homologous end-joining. Genomic rearrangements arising from sequence repeats and repetitive elements will also be presented.

Regulatory T Cells 2008
Mar 1, 2009 - Mar 6, 2009,
Keystone Resort Keystone, Colorado United States

Over the past few years Regulatory T cells have taken center stage in the field of immunoregulation. Several types of regulatory T cell have been described on the basis of their origin, generation and mechanism of action, with two main subsets identified: naturally occurring FOXP3+ regulatory T cells and inducible regulatory T cells. All types of regulatory T cell, by virtue of their capacity to control the intensity of effector responses, have been shown to play a major role in the control of immune responses at large. This meeting will highlight recent developments in our understanding of the molecular basis for the differentiation of naturally occurring or inducible regulatory T cells. The second goal is to discuss information on the targets, mechanism of action, recruitment and homeostasis of regulatory T cells. The third goal is to discuss recent advances in our understanding of the conditions favoring the emergence and regulation of these populations and to discuss how these findings are translated in clinical trials.

5th International Workshop on Fundamentals and Applications of Microplasmas
Mar 1, 2009 - Mar 5, 2009,
San Diego, California United States

The study of microplasmas - low temperature, non equilibrium plasmas having characteristic dimensions < 1 mm - is an emerging area of research that lies at the intersection of plasma science, photonics, and materials science and engineering. Only within the past decade have microplasmas (known also as microcavity plasmas) been shown to have remarkable physical, electrical, and optical properties. These results have triggered a worldwide effort to explore in detail the fundamental mechanisms occurring in these devices and apply single devices and arrays to displays, environmental monitoring and toxic gas remediation, biomedical diagnostics and treatment, and lighting. This rapidly growing field has attracted considerable attention worldwide and was specifically mentioned in a report published last Fall by the U.S. Academy of Sciences as an area of emphasis for the next ten years.

Nitric Oxide
Mar 1, 2009 - Mar 6, 2009,
Il Ciocco Hotel and Resort Lucca, Barga Italy

Gordon Research Conference on “Nitric Oxide (NO)” is designed to provide chemists, biologists, cell biologists, clinicians and other scientists with state of the art knowledge on the basic structure/function relationships of NO generating systems and the biology of NO as a signaling molecule in physiological and pathophysiological states. Sessions will include the chemical and molecular mechanism of action of nitric oxide in cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases as well as cancer. Specific sessions will focus on basic chemistry and biochemistry with emphasis on the mechanisms of NO action at various levels of NO and its role in cardiovascular, neurodegenerative disease and cancer. In addition, there are two prominently featured poster sessions selected from abstracts submitted to the meeting and a special "hot topics" session that encourages last minute submissions of exciting findings from new or established investigators culminating in awards for outstanding junior investigators. The main strength of this meeting is the opportunity for cross disciplinary interactions in a highly focused, yet informal intellectually stimulating atmosphere. The Gordon Conference on NO plays an essential role in exploring new vistas in this important translational field.

Gaseous Ions: Structures, Energetics & Reactions
Mar 1, 2009 - Mar 6, 2009,
Hotel Galvez Galveston, Texas United States

The Gaseous Ions: Structures, Energetics and Reactions Gordon Research Conference is justifiably recognized as the premier meeting to discover the state of the art in a wide range of disciplines where gas phase ions play a role. Topics vary over a range of interests including those in the conference name, ion formation and destruction, laser interactions, cluster ions, and ion-surface interactions. The meeting tradition of involving scientists engaged in fundamental research in gaseous ions and those who apply these concepts to systems of practical use will be continued. Both theoretical and experimental aspects will be covered extensively. Each session will be organized, as much as possible, to start with a small molecule talk and proceed to talks involving large systems including nanoparticles and biomolecules. The meeting has always brought together top researchers in gaseous ions and funds will be raised to subsidize the participation of post-docs and graduate students.

Antimicrobial Peptides 2009
Mar 1, 2009 - Mar 6, 2009,
Four Points Sheraton / Holiday Inn Express Ventura, California United States

The 2009 Gordon Conference on Antimicrobial Peptides will present the latest research on the biology and activities of antimicrobial peptides, essential and multifunctional host defense molecules employed by all organisms for innate defense. The Conference will feature a wide range of topics, such as structure/function analysis, regulation of expression, mechanisms of action, microbial avoidance strategies, human disease associations and model systems, and development of antimicrobial peptides as therapeutics. Invited speakers represent a diverse variety of scientific disciplines, including biochemistry, molecular genetics, microbiology, animal and plant biology, structural biology, medicine, innate immunity, signaling, and drug development. The Conference will bring together a collection of investigators who are at the forefront of their field, and will provide opportunities for junior scientists and graduate students to present their work in poster format and exchange ideas with leaders in the field. Some abstracts and poster presenters will be selected for short talks. The collegial atmosphere of this Conference, with programmed discussion sessions as well as opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, provides an avenue for scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm and promotes cross-disciplinary collaborations in the various research areas represented.

Complex Project Management
Mar 1, 2009 - Mar 2, 2009,
Sheraton, Bahrain

Project Management is an unplanned profession: very few people enter the corporate world planning to be project managers. More often than not they come into the workforce as engineers, software developers and business strategy analysts. During their which on many occasions are large scale distributed projects or multiple interdependent projects.

Volatile economic markets and stringent availability of resources make it absolutely necessary for project managers to lead their teams affectively and efficiently so that they can achieve all project objectives in spite of the limitations and complications. Without proper guidance and correct information even the best project teams would not be able to complete projects successfully. The project manager must be able to plan ahead for any unforeseen measures and allocate responsibilities accordingly to facilitate successful project completion every time.

Complex project management is a specialised skill by itself and is seldom addressed satisfactorily. Regardless of prior education on Project Management or lack thereof, those who are focused on productivity simply do not rely on instincts and experience to guide them through turbulent waters. By attending this course, delegates can ensure that they are equipped with the proficiency that is imperative not only to complete projects successfully but also to achieve excellence in performance and standout as an invaluable asset in the organisation.
