Physicians: Physicians’ Education Resource is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

This activity has been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

Nurses: Physicians’ Education Resource is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

93rd NASSP Annual Convention

New Format for 2009

Based on the thoughts and feedback from our Convention attendees and exhibitor representatives, we are pleased to introduce the following new elements for our 2009 Convention in San Diego:

• 2009 Secondary School Showcase on Thursday. The one-day Showcase will be conducted in lieu of the pre-Convention Workshops and School Visits historically held on Thursday. Through the Showcase, NASSP and The Center for Secondary School Redesign (CSSR) will bring teams from high-achieving schools to discuss what they have done, and how––to address today’s leading issues in our schools.

• A Festive Opening Reception in the Exhibit Hall on Thursday, 5:00 p.m.– 7:00 p.m. This new reception will welcome Convention attendees and officially launch the 2009 NASSP Convention & Exposition.

• NEW! Luncheon Format for the Closing General Session on Sunday, 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. Participation in the Closing General Session Luncheon will be included in an individual’s Convention registration fee (a reservation will be requested). All traditions of Sunday’s Closing General Session will remain the same, including a keynote presentation.

Joint EASL-AASLD Conference: Nuclear Receptors and Liver Disease

Nuclear Receptors are relevant for understanding hepatic physiology, pathophysiology, and adaptation to disease, regarding several major areas of basic liver function, including: bile acid transport and metabolism (cholestatic and gallstone disease), hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism (fatty liver disease and metabolic syndrome) and hepatic inflammation, fibrosis and liver cancer. Advances in our understanding of the role of nuclear receptors in liver disease are instrumental for the development of more effective medical therapies for these disorders. Several drugs in everyday clinical use already target nuclear receptors and the future will bring us more refined and specific therapeutic ligands tailored to help patients with these disorders. Central questions that will be addressed in this conference include:

• Roles for nuclear receptors in hepatic physiology and disease
• Gene regulation by nuclear receptors in bile formation and metabolism, cholestatic liver disease, gallstone disease
• Roles for nuclear receptors in hepatic drug metabolism and xenobiotic transformation, hepatotoxicity and drug interactions
• Roles for of nuclear receptors in hepatic lipid metabolism, fatty liver disease, hepatic inflammation, fibrosis, liver regeneration and liver cancer
• Design and application of nuclear receptor ligands as effective therapeutic agents
