Imaging and Drug Development
Feb 22, 2009 - Feb 26, 2009,
Copper Mountain Resort Copper Mountain,, Colorado United States

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is maturing into a key scientific tool, which is increasingly applied in the scientific community and pharmaceutical industry to study drug distribution, drug-target interactions, and disease processes, especially in CNS and oncology areas. Using specific radiotracers, PET can be performed serially over time in the same live subject to study receptor occupancy and pharmacodynamic response of drug action. These studies can facilitate the selection of drug candidates to advance to clinical trials and guide clinical dose selection. This non-invasive technology also allows longitudinal studies to elucidate the underlying pathophysiology of disease, follow the progression, and monitor the outcome of treatment. The combination of genomic knowledge with PET imaging will provide more specific phenotypes that can help to identify genetic predictors of drug response. The objective of this conference is to bring together a wide range of academic and industrial scientists within the PET molecular imaging community with expertise in imaging systems, analytical tools, and drug discovery/development to address some key issues common to the fields of neurology and oncology. The meeting will provide a forum for the cross-fertilization of experience across these two disciplines, including sharing of knowledge in the development and usage of radiotracers, identifying gaps and opportunities in using PET to facilitate drug development, and discussing innovative solutions to overcome challenges in multi-center trials and biomarker qualification/validation.

The Neurobiology of Pain and Analgesia
Feb 22, 2009 - Feb 27, 2009,
Hilton Santa Fe/Historic Plaza Santa Fe, New Mexico United States

This symposium will highlight the substantial advances made in our understanding of the neurobiology and pathophysiology of pain and the enormous opportunities these present for identifying and exploiting new targets for therapy. Current therapy is largely empirical and is based on suppressing symptoms. The future offers treatment targeted at the specific neural mechanisms responsible. This requires understanding the mechanisms, being able to identify which mechanism operates in which patient, and having pharmacological tools to act on the molecular targets that drive these mechanisms. Furthermore, we need to identify which patient is at risk of developing pain and develop preventative disease-modifying treatments to abort the establishment of pain. This symposium will address how these goals can be achieved by the combined effort of academics and industry.

Quantitative Genetics And Genomics
Feb 22, 2009 - Feb 27, 2009,
Hotel Galvez Galveston, Texas United States

Quantitative genetics aims to link phenotypic variation to its underlying genetic basis in order to better understand and predict genetic composition and long term change within natural, agricultural, and human populations. Traditionally built upon statistical abstractions of genetic effects, the field is now rapidly advancing by making use of recent developments in genetic technology to reveal explicit links between genes and complex phenotypes, and therefore serves as a focal point bringing together many emerging areas of genetics, genomics, physiology, statistics and computational biology. This synthesis is already having a large impact on the areas of evolutionary biology, plant and animal breeding, and the analysis of human disease.

The strength of the Gordon Conference on "Quantitative Genetics and Genomics" has historically been the bringing together of leaders in each of these fields to explore areas of shared interest and cutting edge developments with the potential to affect all researchers within the broad field of quantitative genetics. Building upon the tremendous success of our conferences in recent years, we will again focus on many cutting-edge developments in the field, including whole genomic approaches to understanding genetic variation, genome architecture and regulation, systems biology, non-traditional forms of inheritance, and statistical genetics.

Protons & Membrane Reactions
Feb 22, 2009 - Feb 27, 2009,
Four Points Sheraton / Holiday Inn Express Ventura, California United States

The goal of the conference “Protons & Membrane Reactions”, since its inception in 1988, has been to bring together scientists studying the structure and function of proteins that transport protons, other ions and solutes across lipid membranes. The conference brings together scientists who study a wide range of different systems utilizing a diverse range of approaches and who typically attend different types of meetings. The truly interdisciplinary character of the participants in this conference makes it unusually exciting and effective. Contributing disciplines include structural biology, electrophysiology, protein biochemistry and biophysics, photobiology, bioenergetics, molecular dynamics, protein electrostatics, bioinformatics and homology modeling of membrane proteins.

Cilia, Mucus & Mucociliary Interactions
Feb 22, 2009 - Feb 27, 2009,
Il Ciocco Hotel and Resort Lucca (Barga), Italy

The fields of cilia, mucus, and mucociliary interactions represent different scientific disciplines that are highly relevant to each other, yet rarely combined into a common meeting. The importance of these areas with respect to normal development, physiology and disease is well recognized, and the recent explosion in basic understanding of ciliary function as well as mucus composition and secretion have greatly increased possibilities for therapeutic intervention in these diseases at the molecular level. This conference offers an opportunity for basic and clinical scientists involved in these areas to present their latest progress to each other, to exchange ideas, and to discuss new state-of-the-art technologies. Topics to be covered in 2009 include:

* Cilia in Development
* Development of Airway Mucus Cells
* Signaling and Transcriptional Control
* Centriole Duplication and Ciliary Assembly
* Mucin Secretion
* Cilia and Mucus in Disease (including primary ciliary dyskinesia, Bardet-Biedl syndrome, goblet cell hyperplasia, mucous cell metaplasia, etc.)
* Mechanism and Control of Ciliary Motility
* Mucociliary Interactions

World Conference on the Fight/Prevention of Drug Abuse, Illicit Drug Use and Trafficking Among the Youth
Feb 22, 2009 - Feb 24, 2009,
Resort, Kampala, Uganda 256

This world conference targets the youth in the whole world on issues that have hindered the level of their participation in development. Most of today’s youths have chosen the use of drugs as their survival since most of them are not employed, while others grew up under poverty, others grew up as street/vulnerable and orphaned children’s.

The main themes:

Stoping drug abuse and its effects to both the youth and the general community..

Looking at how the youth can learn how to create different income generating activities.

Prevention of unemployment.

Capacity building for the youth.

HIV/AIDS prevention techniques.

Coordination and collaboration.

Creating global collaboration among organizations and individuals who
want to uplift the mission of fighting drug abuse, use, and trafficking.

Description:

The onference is about how we can prevent the youth from drug abuse and also trafficking with a focus of improving their lives, their capacity of creating jobs, and prevention of both psychological and social dis-orders.

It is a conference for all youths in the world and the first to be organised in Uganda. The youth are the main factor that determines the development of our localities, their contributions towards development is important because they put in much effort to get what is desired for them.

But today, most of the youths have left out this ideology, reason being they are illiterate, poor, orphaned, vulnerable and unemployed. What they ought to do is to get involved in drug abuse, use and trafficking as a process which they hope will improve on their survival.

The use of these drugs has resulted into problems like death, psychological disorders, theft (some have become armed robbers terrorizing their fellow people) a case which has put many countries on a time bomb.

Therefore we the youth in the whole world we have missed our friends who would have been so resourceful to the development of our localities because of drug abuse, use and trafficking.

Hence, it is our concern as fellow youths to come up and support our brothers and sisters from being affected with this problem by creating a one global idea/vision to fight drug abuse and nicotine fix and trafficking.

We should attend so that we can be able to change our lives, the lives of our brothers and sisters affected by drug use or the way we live by creating alternatives that can give us light in order for achieving sustainable development.
