Therapeutic Modulation of RNA Using Oligonucleotides
Feb 8, 2009 - Feb 13, 2009,
Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Lake Louise, Alberta Canada

The recent discoveries of the RNAi pathway in mammalian cells and the finding that oligonucleotides can activate the innate immune system through Toll-like receptors have resulted in increased interest in oligonucleotide-based therapeutics. There are two basic therapeutic approaches in which oligonucleotides are being utilized: (1) binding to RNA resulting in selective inhibition of gene expression; and (2) modulating protein function by direct binding to proteins. Although both approaches share common manufacturing, toxicology and ADME issues, oligonucleotides that are designed to bind RNA inside the cell have a fundamental different set of challenges than oligonucleotides designed to bind to proteins outside the cell. This meeting will focus on the former application. A goal of this meeting is to bring together scientists from both the basic science disciplines and applied disciplines to gain a common understanding of the attributes and challenges the technology faces. This meeting will consider basic mechanisms by which oligonucleotides can be exploited to modulate gene expression, mechanisms for distribution of oligonucleotides to tissues and within cells and how chemistry and/or formulations can improve the pharmaceutical properties of oligonucleotides. Finally recent advances in both preclinical applications and clinical results will be presented.

Immunologic Memory and Host Defense
Feb 8, 2009 - Feb 13, 2009,
Keystone Resort Keystone, Colorado United States

Immune memory has a critical role in mediating protection against infections as well as potentiating certain allergic and autoimmune diseases. Hence a thorough understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating adaptive immune memory will have important clinical application. In this regard, there has been great progress in understanding how the innate immune response influences adaptive immunity. Furthermore, improved methods to visualize immune responses in vivo, characterize the phenotypic and functional properties of adaptive immune responses and how lymphoid and non-lymphoid compartments influence the maintenance of such responses has substantially improved our understanding in this area. However, major hurdles still relate to difficulties in eliciting sustained T cell responses sufficient to mediate protection in humans with current vaccines. The goal of the meeting will be to focus on basic mechanisms for how T and B cells are programmed to induce and sustain immunity. The program is designed to integrate information from mouse, non-human primate and human studies to encompass all relevant areas related to control of memory T and B cell responses. In summary, this meeting should facilitate translational research that will impact vaccines and interventions for infectious disease, cancer and autoimmune/allergic disease.

Salivary Glands & Exocrine Secretion
Feb 8, 2009 - Feb 13, 2009,
Hotel Galvez Galveston, Texas United States

This is the seventh conference in a highly successful series which has endeavored to bring together established salivary and exocrine gland investigators, both basic and translational with promising more junior scientists and experts from associated fields. As the preeminent multi-disciplinary conference in the exocrine biology field, the overarching goal is to identify, discuss and prioritize the important future research directions pertinent to understanding the physiology and pathophysiology of exocrine glands and their secretions. In particular, to facilitate and strengthen collaborations between groups with differing strengths, but with intimately related interests, the conference will highlight the topical issues shared with researchers working in salivary and other exocrine glands including pancreas, lacrimal and lung. To these ends, the topics covered will include the molecular mechanisms involved in exocrine gland development and apoptosis, signal transduction, gene regulation together with protein and fluid secretion. The role dysregulation of these processes play in the initiation and progression of "exocrineopathies" such as Sjogrens syndrome, dry eye and pancreatitis will also be a particular feature.

Mammalian DNA Repair
Feb 8, 2009 - Feb 13, 2009,
Four Points Sheraton / Holiday Inn Express Ventura, California United States

The Mammalian DNA Repair Gordon Research Conference meets biannually. Unlike the larger conferences in this rapidly expanding field that meet regularly but less frequently, the Mammalian DNA Repair GRC does not attempt to be comprehensive in its coverage of the multiplicity of DNA repair processes and their biological importance but rather highlights recent major advances in selected key areas. As evidenced by a number of rare human genetic diseases involving DNA repair defects and by mouse models, DNA repair processes are now understood to be critical for maintaining genomic stability and genetic integrity and function in the face of abundant endogenously generated DNA damage as well as the typically low environmental exposures to genotoxins. A number of recent research advances using these systems place DNA repair squarely at the crossroads of cancer and aging, and mechanistic understanding of key processes is progressing rapidly. The 2009 conference will emphasize new themes in the area of the DNA damage response. Specifically, we will emphasize 1.) crosstalk among the six major DNA repair pathways 2.) the coordination of multiple pathways (NER, HR, and TLS) in DNA crosslink repair 3.) the importance of post-translational modifications (i.e., phosphorylation, Ubiquitination, and acetylation) in regulating the assembly and function of DNA repair complexes and 4.) the emergence of new diagnostic biomarkers and DNA repair inhibitors, such as PARP1 inhibitors, in cancer therapy.

Chemical Reactions At Surfaces
Feb 8, 2009 - Feb 13, 2009,
Ventura Beach Marriott Ventura, California United States

Chemical reactions at surfaces underlie some of the most important processes of today, including catalysis, energy conversion, microelectronics, human health and the environment. Understanding surface chemical reactions at a fundamental level is at the core of the field of surface science. The Gordon Research Conference on Chemical Reactions at Surfaces is one of the premiere meetings in the field. The program this year will cover a broad range of topics, including heterogeneous catalysis and surface chemistry, surfaces in environmental chemistry and energy conversion, reactions at the liquid-solid and liquid-gas interface, electronic materials growth and surface modification, biological interfaces, and electrons and photons at surfaces. An exciting program is planned, with contributions from outstanding speakers and discussion leaders from the international scientific community. The conference provides a dynamic environment with ample time for discussion and interaction. Attendees are encouraged to present posters; the poster sessions are historically well attended and stimulate additional discussions. The conference provides an excellent opportunity for junior researchers (e.g. graduate students or postdocs) to present their work and interact with established leaders in the field.
