- TH17 Cells in Health and Disease
-
Feb 5, 2009 - Feb 10, 2009,
Fairmont Hotel Vancouver Vancouver, British Columbia CanadaT lymphocytes are important mediators of autoimmune diseases and their tolerance to self-antigens is tightly regulated. Regulatory T (Treg) cells maintain immune tolerance. Recently, a novel subset of CD4+ T cells that produce IL-17 (named Th17) has been identified and shown to be highly pathogenic in many autoimmune diseases. Surprisingly, there appears to be a reciprocal relationship between Th17 and Treg cells in their generation, and function. Therefore, T cell biology needs to be further re-examined in the context of molecular pathways that are required for their generation, mechanisms that are involved in their antagonism and function. The goal of this symposium is to bring the leaders in the field together to assess the increased complexity in the generation of pathogenic and regulatory T cells at the cellular, molecular and organismal levels and discuss the potential impact of these new findings on the development of treatments of human autoimmune diseases.

- Macroeconomics of Pension Reform
-
Feb 5, 2009 - Feb 5, 2009,
Amsterdam, Noord Holland NetherlandsThis research theme focuses on macroeconomic aspects of pensions. Starting point is the three-pillar pension system featuring state pensions (1st pillar), mandatory supplementary pensions (2nd pillar) and free individual savings (3rd pillar). Key questions are what weight should be given to each of the pillars, what is the optimal pension contract in each of these pillars, and what is the government's role in shaping the pension system. In order to answer these questions attention will be given to the optimal pension contract in each of these pillars, the interrelationship between the pillars and the impact of the pension system on the economy as a whole.
The theme integrates results from microeconomic analysis into macroeconomic models and applies these models to analyze relevant policy issues. The analyses will be carried out both on a theoretical level and on a empirical level using applied general-equilibrium models for the Netherlands. These models build on the model used previously by CPB in its work on ageing and pensions, but will extend it in two important directions. First, risk and the valuation of risk will be introduced in macroeconomic models, thereby building on the results of other Netspar themes. Second, the models in this theme will extend the analysis of general equilibrium effects of shocks in pensions on labour markets and financial markets, both on a national and international level. - full details
