2nd International Symposium on Shallow Flows

This symposium will bring together scientists and engineers representing environmental fluid mechanics, oceanography, atmospheric sciences, hydrology and hydraulic engineering that are active in the fields of free surface flows, shallow fluid flows and quasi-two-dimensional turbulent flows. In the context of shallow flows (i.e., the length scale and the Reynolds number of the flow in one direction are significantly smaller than the length scales and Reynolds numbers in the other two directions) the following topics will be considered:

1. Mean flow, turbulence properties, and coherent structures
2. Transport of momentum, heat, solutes, pollutants and sediment,
3. Wave and turbulence interaction,
4. Flow pattern and characteristics in mixing layers, jets and wakes,
5. Resistance at flow boundaries,
6. Scale separation and interaction between 2D large scales and 3D small scales
7. Analytical approaches (hydrodynamic stability),
8. Numerical simulations,
9. Laboratory and field experiments including remote sensing,
10. Applications in atmospheric, oceanic, channel flows and other quasi-two-dimensional turbulent flows.

Eudravigilance - Electronic Reporting of ICSRs in the EEA (London)

EudraVigilance is the European data-processing network and management system, established at the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) to support the electronic exchange, management, and scientific evaluation of Individual Case Safety Reports (ICSRs) related to all medicinal products authorised in the European Economic Area (EEA). EudraVigilance also incorporates data analysis facilities and is therefore regarded as one of the main pillars of the European Risk Management Strategy, which aims to strengthen the conduct of pharmacovigilance in Europe.

Community legislation is in place to ensure that all stakeholders, including National Competent Authorities and pharmaceutical companies in the EEA collect, collate and exchange adverse drug reactions.

The implementation of the electronic transmission of ICSRs, based on the results of the International Conference on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for the Registration of Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH), is currently a top priority in the area of pharmacovigilance at Community level to make data exchange and management more efficient.

EVWEB, the Internet-based reporting tool developed at the EMEA, was released in 2004 to allow Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) that hold marketing authorisations in the EEA, to report electronically adverse reactions, in full compliance with the internationally agreed standards, to the EMEA and National Competent Authorities. Further, EVWEB helps the regulators in the Community to manage the constantly increasing volume of adverse reaction reports more efficiently. In addition, EVWEB was extended to integrate the new reporting requirements of suspected serious unexpected adverse reactions (SUSARs) as a result of the EU Directive on Clinical Trials.

Since the First Conference which took place in Brussels in 2004, Renewable and Distributed Energy Resources have been expanding into the electricity grids worldwide: yet, their further grid integration will still raise issues and challenges..

In line with the Second Conference held in the Napa Valley on December 2006, it is the aim of this Third International Conference to reinforce the dialogue between all the involved players, starting from science and technology experts and reaching utility operators, regulators and policy makers. Engineering Principles in Biological Systems

There are two key ideas behind this meeting: that theoretical engineering principles that have been developed in the context of human engineered systems are useful in understanding biological function, and that these principles apply across scales, from the cellular to the organism level. In keeping with these ideas, we hope to attract researchers in fields ranging from bacterial systems biology to neural systems, with shared interest in engineering principles. Sessions will be broken up according to broad areas of engineering, and there will also be a session on evolution.

The conference is intended to foster cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas and expertise between engineers, mathematicians and biologists interested in the analysis of diverse biological systems through the application of engineering principles. While a number of speakers have been invited, please note that the majority of oral presentations will be drawn from openly submitted abstracts.

1st Microfluidics European Conference (MicroFlu 2008)

8th International Conference on EcoBalance
