-
Oct 28, 2008 - Oct 31, 2008,
Johannesburg, Gauteng South AfricaFrom the successful Defence Interoperability events held in the United Kingdom and in America, IQPC now brings to you Defence Interoperability Africa
Armies in Africa deserve to have state-of-the-art telecommunications equipment to keep up with the fast and dynamic developments in communication and information systems. The military could only fulfil their duty as "catalysts of peace" and provide security and relief during disasters and conflicts if their communication and information systems were interoperable.
North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) has more than fifty years of experience of forces working together when designing the African Standby Force Brigades. The idea is not to copy NATO but to use NATO's established knowledge base as a point of departure when developing Africa's own systems. Failure to make all communications systems compatible, interchangeable and common may result in armed forces in NATO countries not being deployed on the African continent. - full details

- 3rd International Conference on Risks and Security of Internet and Systems
-
Oct 28, 2008 - Oct 30, 2008,
Tozeur TunisiaThe Internet has become essential for the exchange of information. Many user groups from different backgrounds and with different objectives depend on it to perform their daily tasks. Various activities are carried out via the Internet: between companies (B2B), between businesses and consumers (B2C), or between individuals who create their own virtual communities. Moreover, many companies are interconnecting their Information Technologies systems, including SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) systems, directly or indirectly to the Internet. At the same time, the use of the Internet is facing increasing risks regarding safety, reliability, privacy and security, in particular due to vulnerabilities induced by the increasing complexity of Internet-related applications. Therefore, new security and dependability mechanisms and techniques should be deployed to achieve an assurance level acceptable for critical domains such as transportation, health, defence, banking, critical infrastructures, etc.
In this context, dependability, security and privacy become a priority that should be addressed by all actors in research, industry, services and governments. These issues will be studied from different view points: research results, practical experiment and deployment, applications and case studies, etc. Different application domains are concerned: telemedicine, e-government, e-learning, e-commerce, critical infrastructures, etc. CRiSIS’2008 will be a forum for the participants to broaden professional contacts and for technical discussions on security and dependability issues. - full details

- Gravitational Collapse at Continental Margins
-
Oct 28, 2008 - Oct 29, 2008,
The Geological Society (Burlington House) London, England United KingdomLarge-scale gravitational collapse is an important but poorly understood mode of deformation and mass transport at continental margins. Often spectacular seismic data acquired over the past 20 years image extensive deformation systems characterised by zones of thin-skin faulting and folding developed at the outer self and continental slope. Driven by body forces within the sedimentary prism, basal detachments kinematically link upslope extensional faulting to downslope thrust belts, with many analogies with smaller subaerial slope failures.
Contributions have been invited from academia and industry that use case history and/or modelling-based studies to address the following issues:
* Structural geometry
* Rates and scales of deformation
* Kinematic links between extension and contraction
* Decollement mechanics
* Interplay between faulting, folding and horizontal compaction
* Interactions between deposition and deformation
* Role of gravity sliding vs. gravity spreading
* Implications for geotechnical stability and human hazard - full details
