ESF-EMBO Symposium (Protein Design and Evolution for Biocatalysis)

The meeting will bring together internationally renowned speakers who will review the current state of knowledge in the field of protein design and evolution for biocatalysis. The symposium will be the third event in a series held in Paris (2002) and Greifswald (2006). The main objective of the 2008 meeting will be to intensify discussion and collaboration between experimentalists with theoreticians, which is needed for development of novel biocatalysts by combining directed evolution with rational protein design. The meeting will be highly interdisciplinary through the participation of speakers with various backgrounds and research interests. The lectures will span the fields of mechanistic enzymology, biocatalysis, protein crystallography, computer simulations, phylogenetics, structural bioinformatics and synthetic biology. A substantial amount of time will be devoted to poster presentations and informal discussion to promote exchange of ideas and dissemination of information. Young scientists are encouraged to actively participate and a number of lectures will be reserved for their presentations based on originality and scientific quality of submitted abstracts.

    The Annual Symposium for Nurses and Pharmacists Specializing in Oncology: Assessing and Managing Side Effects in the Era of Targeted Therapies is intended to educate oncology nurses and pharmacists on the state-of-the-art options for effective management of cancer and treatment-related complications.     Current Trends in Genitourinary Malignancies (New York)

    The Current Trends in Genitourinary Malignancies regional symposium is designed to provide updates on the clinical management of kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers. Participants will be updated on current concepts in surgical, chemotherapeutic, and multimodality approaches to the treatment of bladder cancer. Relevant data on the molecular elements of prostate cancer and the clinical management of patients with prostate-specific antigen relapse and high-risk localized disease will be covered. Participants will review available clinical data on conventional chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, novel targeted and combination therapy, and immunotherapy for the treatment of advanced and castration-resistant prostate cancer. The molecular biology of the pathogenesis of renal cell carcinoma and trial data on novel and second-generation antiangiogenic agents will be presented. Experts will apprise attendees of relevant trial data in order to aid in choosing individualized treatment for patients with advanced kidney cancer across multiple lines of therapy. This interactive symposium will include didactic sessions, case-based learning, and panel discussions with leading faculty who will offer their opinions regarding the clinical challenges facing practicing physicians.

    The purpose of this activity is to inform participants of the latest advances in the treatment of genitourinary malignancies, promote the integration of those advances into the practice setting, and describe future directions in research and clinical trials.
