Scope of conference – 2007 was a big year for both the implementation and recognition of the value of adaptive trial designs in drug development. This was evidenced by:

* Large pharmaceutical organizations implementing and reporting time and cost savings associated with the use of adaptive trial designs
* EMEA’s finalization and publication of their “Reflection Paper on Methodological Issues in Confirmatory Clinical Trials Planned with Adaptive Design” (CHMP/EWP/2459/02) last October
* EMEA/EFPIA workshop on adaptive designs in confirmatory clinical trials conducted in Dec. 2007

While the evidence supports that adaptive trial designs have improved efficiency in drug development and regulators are receptive to their use; adoption of these designs within the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry is slow. Why is change so slow to come; what are the barriers? This conference will focus on overcoming the barriers for the implementation of adaptive trial designs in your organization. The theme of the ACR 2008 conference is "Port of Call." Researchers from around the world will arrive in the international trading center of San Francisco, laden with a valuable cargo of ideas for sale and trade. Our theme therefore is meant to highlight the international nature of our organization, our reliance on the conference as a marketplace to which we bring and exchange our wares, and the role of the conference in building intellectual and social connections. It stresses the role of ideas as potentially exotic, previously unseen, and created by others not precisely like ourselves. In this sense, our theme is meant to underscore the values emphasized by the 2007 conference and its theme of "Building Bridges." Further, port cities, like the conference, are diverse and a little dangerous as should be our best research. We hope to highlight new ideas, ideas that can shape the field.

The format for the conference will have some parallels to last year’s schedule. The opening reception will be held Thursday night. Sessions will be held on Friday and Saturday. Roundtable discussions will be held during regular session hours. The doctoral symposium will be held on Thursday. There will be no Sunday sessions.

We are the first national trade association for the algae industry in the United States, and we have doubled in size just in the last three months. We had very informative presentations from algae researchers and algae companies at our conference in July. People from 25 states, 4 countries and 8 universities registered for that conference. Due to the high cost of oil, commercializing the algae oil industry is now put on a fast track. We need to get off foreign oil and to bring back energy security to the US. Collaboration, innovation and commercialization are the motivating factors of our organization.

We will be structuring the next conference differently than the one we just completed, and we are now requesting algae research and company presentations in order to commit to an agenda.
