World Trade Center, Boston, Massachusetts United States

RNA interference (RNAi) is now routinely used as a screening tool for identifying and validating potential drug targets, exploring cellular pathways, and for whole-genome studies. The screens using both small interfering RNA (siRNA) and short hairpin (shRNA) have become fairly robust and sensitive and can be performed in a reliable and high-throughput fashion. However, are they being done in a manner that’s most efficient and effective in getting results? Can there be further improvements made to assay design and protocols to minimize off-target effects?

CHI’s sixth annual meeting on RNAi for Screening will be held October 21-22, 2008 at the World Trade Center in Boston. This day and half event will bring together experts who can delve into the details of RNAi screening. The conference will feature presentations, posters, interactive panel discussions and technology workshops, all aimed to provide scientists and executives in academia, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology companies with the latest on RNAi screening technologies and their applications. Illumination Modeling: Simulation and Perception of Lit and Unlit Objects (IM)
Oct 21, 2008 - Oct 24, 2008,
Clarion Riverside Hotel Rochester, New York United States

There are an increasing number of applications that require a good understanding of ambient lighting and illumination of objects or scenes to create a desired effect or appearance. Applications such as 3-D virtual environment visualization, architectural lighting, computer animation and automotive lighting are some of the areas that deal with the effect of ambient lighting and a lit model’s appearance. Complimentary to understanding such effects is the need for sources and optical designs to create the desired illumination while understanding human perceptual characteristics.

This topical meeting aims at bringing together communities such as lighting, computer graphics, color technologists, optical designers, light sources and virtual reality towards the common goal of design, production and understanding of ambient lighting and a lit model’s appearance. We would like to encourage submissions in the following areas:

* Simulation of ambient lighting and rendering of lit scenes and objects. Applications in virtual reality and animation.
* Human factors in lighting and lighting perception.
* Aesthetic design for buildings.
* Light sources for architectural and vehicular lighting.
* Optical design for lighting applications and non-imaging optics.

Subsurface Sediment Remobilization and Fluid Flow in Sedimentary Basins
Oct 21, 2008 - Oct 22, 2008,
The Geological Society (Burlington House) London, England, United Kingdom

The remobilization and injection of mud and sand is both a response to and a control on fluid flow in sedimentary basins. Understanding fluid flow is the key to efficient and safe hydrocarbon exploration and to understanding the evolution of sedimentary basins. Sediment remobilisation and injection has implications for hydrocarbon exploration and production by impacting source, migration, reservoir, trap and seal aspects of the hydrocarbon system and poses potential drilling hazards. Currently, there is a poor understanding of sand and mud remobilization processes and associated focused fluid flow systems and perhaps an even worse understanding of the diagenetic impact of focused fluid flow and vice versa. This conference aims to bring together scientists from a variety of disciplines (geologists, geophysicists, geochemists) from both academic and industrial communities to present and discuss the state-of-the-art understanding of subsurface sediment remobilization and fluid flow in sedimentary basins.

Maximizing the Impact of Agricultural Research in Africa: A Workshop on Research Communication
Oct 21, 2008 - Oct 22, 2008,
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Agricultural development in Africa is regaining attention, particularly in the recent light of food security challenges. The World Bank and other donors, as well as African initiatives such as NEPAD, FARA, AGRA, etc. are investing major resources to stimulate agricultural production across essential food staples and commodities for both agribusinesses and small holder farmers. Research and technological advancements represent a key to enhanced productivity and are also receiving much attention. In fact, Robert Zoellick of the World Bank recently proposed that funding for the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research should double in the next five years. However, research by itself does not necessarily lead to change either in the field or at the policy level. How can this link be strengthened? This workshop will explore in detail how research institutes working in agriculture can maximize the impact of their work through enhanced communication efforts.

Workshop Objectives

• To examine past efforts at partnerships, peer learning and experience sharing and to explore the causes of success and failure.
• To develop the capacity of staff in improving the impact of the research being produced by their research institutes and universities, and to examine how this has been done by their peers.
• To facilitate the sharing of knowledge among key research institutes and to discuss ideas on how to strengthen this exchange.
