- 6th International Woodcoatings Congress
-
Oct 14, 2008 - Oct 15, 2008,
Mercure Aan de Amstel Hotel Amsterdam, NetherlandsThe scope of the congress includes all new developments in coatings for interior and exterior wood applications. By extension, the congress will also include developments in wood preservation, as with suitable design, the preservative and coating can work together to give a complete wood protection package. Wood continues to be a highly attractive material, being renewable and "natural", with the potential for high aesthetic value and originality. However, it also has a very diverse nature, from the different species from which it is derived, and the growing conditions to which it has been subjected. This must be reflected in the formulation of coatings designed to protect it and enhance its beauty. Another challenge for wood coating technologists is the development of suitable coatings for the emerging range of modified wood materials, aimed mainly at upgrading the performance of softwoods to that of tropical hardwoods. There is therefore a constant need to develop coatings which satisfy multiple needs in different woodcoating markets, while at the same time complying with current legislation aimed at reducing VOC emissions and eliminating potentially hazardous raw materials in line with REACH.

- 2nd Information Interaction in Context Symposium (IIiX 2008)
-
Oct 14, 2008 - Oct 17, 2008,
BCS Office, London, England, United KingdomThe availability of information across media and genres, across languages, and across modalities constantly increases. How people access this information is highly dependent on the context of their interaction and this context is influenced by a range of factors such as the time, place, and history of interaction, the tasks motivating the interaction and the technical possibilities of the information systems. Although the use of information systems is heavily affected by contextual factors, Information Retrieval and Seeking research is largely conducted out of context. IIiX will explore the relationships between the contexts that affect Information Retrieval and Seeking, how these contexts impact on information behaviour, and how knowledge of information contexts can help design truly interactive information systems.

- 4th International Conference on the Quality of Software-Architectures (QoSA 2008)
-
Oct 14, 2008 - Oct 17, 2008,
University of Karlsruhe Karlsruhe, Baden Wurttemberg GermanyToday, a system's software architecture cannot be seen simply as a means to an end, the end being the implemented system. Although the ultimate measure of the quality of the software architecture lies in the implemented system, in how well it satisfies the requirements and constraints of the project and whether it can be maintained and evolved successfully, the quality of a system's software architecture is one of the critical factors in its overall system quality - encompassing both functional and extrafunctional properties. In order to treat design as an engineering discipline rather than an art, we need the ability to address the quality of the software architecture directly, not simply as it is reflected in the implemented system.
This is a specific goal of QoSA - to deal with software architecture in general and simultaneously focus on its quality characteristics by addressing the problems of:
*designing software architectures of good quality,
*defining, measuring, evaluating architecture quality, and
*managing architecture quality, tying it upstream to requirements and downstream to implementation, and preserving architecture quality throughout the lifetime of the system.
Cross-cutting these problems is the question of the nature of software architecture. Software architecture organizes a system, partitioning it into elements and defining relationships among the elements. For this we often use multiple views, each with a different organizing principle. - full details

- Narrow Vein Mining Conference
-
Oct 14, 2008 - Oct 15, 2008,
Ballarat Lodge Ballarat, Victoria AustraliaNarrow vein mining operations form a relatively small but vital part of our international mining industry. For example, many historical gold fields are now being reworked or redeveloped, including those of Central Victoria, Hill End and Charters Towers in Australia. The skills and expertise required to manage these natural resources are arguably highly specialised, and can include dealing with issues of complex geology and geometry, a high nugget effect, high planned and additional dilution, the need for high selectivity, high stress conditions, low tonnes per vertical metre, coarse gold and/or complex metallurgy.
The purpose of this conference is to bring together those involved in narrow vein exploitation, including geologists, and geotechnical and mining engineers. The future of narrow vein mining depends upon both highly skilled and professional geoscientists and engineers, and on developing innovative methods for evaluation and exploitation. Solutions are required for the unique challenges that this style of mineralisation presents. - full details

- Global Fraud Summit
-
Oct 14, 2008 - Oct 17, 2008,
Sheraton Towers, SingaporeToday, businesses are fraught with fraud. 90% of white-collar crimes are now committed by companies’ own staff. Why the increase? Companies must boost their internal controls, compliance and anti-fraud framework. However, establishing one is tough. Training and awareness, gaining trust among employees are challenges the fraud manager has to tackle.
Furthermore, fraudsters have an international syndicate and they have also made use of technology as a means to defraud their organizations. Fraudsters these days get away without punishment as sometimes, companies do not wish to bear the brunt of losing their reputation. So how can there be a system to alert that the fraudster is on the lose? Do whistleblowing tactics work? What are repercussions of the whistleblower? Dare anyone be the whistleblower in the Asian context?
This summit will address strategies, theories and practical methodologies to prevent fraud, dismiss the idea of cheating and have policies for control.
