GridNets 2008: 2nd International Conference on Networks for Grid
Oct 8, 2008 - Oct 10, 2008,
Best Western Olympic Hotel, Beijing, Beijing (munic.) China

All accepted papers will be published by Springer in the ICST Lecture Notes (LNICST) series. The proceedings will be published by Springer and will be available both as paper-based copies and via Springerlink.

The GridNets conference series is an annual international meeting that provides a focused and highly interactive forum where researchers and technologists have the opportunity to present and discuss leading research, developments, and future directions in the Grid networking area. The goal of this event is to serve as both the premier conference presenting best Grid Networking research and a forum where new concepts can be introduced and explored.

Grid developers and practitioners are increasingly realising the importance of efficient network support. Entire classes of applications would greatly benefit by a network-aware grid middleware, able to effectively manage the network resource in terms of scheduling, access and use. Conversely, the peculiar requirements of grid applications provide stimulating drivers for new challenging research towards the development of grid-aware networks.

Cooperation between grid middleware and network infrastructure driven by a common control plane is a key factor to effectively empower the global grid platform for the execution of network-intensive applications, requiring massive data transfers, very fast and low-latency connections, and stable and guaranteed transmission rates. Large e-science projects, as well as industrial and engineering applications for data analysis, image processing, multimedia, or visualisation just to name a few are awaiting an efficient grid network support. They would be boosted by a global grid platform enabling end-to-end dynamic bandwidth allocation, broadband and low-latency access, interdomain access control, and other network performance monitoring capabilities.

Cancer Degradome Symposium
Oct 8, 2008 - Oct 9, 2008,
Royal Institute of British Architects, London, England, United Kingdom

There has long been a connection between proteases and cancer biology, since these enzymes can endow tumour cells with the ability to invade and metastasize, or spread through the body. However, we now know that proteases are involved in a host of subtle regulatory mechanisms that determine the extracellular environment, and how cells respond to their environments, and in so doing they can control cancer cell growth and death, the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis) that supply the growing tumour with nutrients, and also the ability of the immune system to detect cancers. It is this set of protease genes, together with their natural inhibitors, and the proteins with which they interact, that is called the DEGRADOME. We can only now appreciate that any attempt to understand the relevance of proteases in cancer must consider the extraordinary diversity and versatility of these enzymes in different contexts.

This workshop will combine the findings of the EU Framework 6 Programme on the ‘Cancer Degradome’ with those of other colleagues in the field. The focus will be on extracellular proteinases and their status as markers and therapeutic targets in cancer. The use of novel techniques to study aspects of their in vitro and in vivo functions will be a particular focus.

Packaging Technology and Metallurgy Course
Oct 8, 2008 - Oct 10, 2008,
Kuala Lumpur Malaysia

Semitracks, Inc. and SHRDC have put together a course which will provide an overview of the current business climate, anticipated trends and the associated impact on assembly/packaging roadmaps. There will be an in-depth discussion of both high-end CPU roadmaps plus the roadmaps to address the multitude of communications and network devices that are driving the digital revolution. The course will generically address typical assembly flows and cost implications for both wafer fabrication and assembly with special focus on what the low cost alternatives will be in both camps. Based on the technical reliability issues that the packaging roadmaps drive, such as thin film delamination/cracking, bump cracks, via delamination/cracking, thermal interface degradation, heat sink retention, and socketing issues, there will be a review of commonly used failure analysis tools and techniques appropriate to each failure mechanism. Thus, state of the art non-destructive imaging tools of acoustics, x-ray, scanning SQUID microscopy, and terahertz imaging will be reviewed with respect to advantages, limitations and likely evolution to next generation. Other techniques that will be discussed are time domain reflectometry (TDR), adhesion testing, thin film materials characterization and disassembly techniques to allow fault isolation and failure analysis. There will be discussion of the impact of next generation technologies such as Cu, ultra low k dielectrics, 300mm wafer fabrication, wafer scale packaging, embedded passives, chip on board and modular integration. Finally the course will hint at the future which focuses on Nanotechnology, Connectintelligence and the currently ill thought out arena of what packaging/assembly even means for this era of molecular devices. The course will also cover metallurgy of metals such as connectors, sealants, thermal interface materials (TIMs) and shock absorbers. There will be discussion on the metallurgy of solders in the lead free solders, under-bump metallization (UBM), solder joint cracks and ILD damage, metallurgical implications, electromigration comparisons of Al, Cu and solders, tin whiskers in lead free applications, and many more. This course is recommended for engineers and scientists involved in setting the direction for adapting to the rapidly exploding arena of assembly/packaging in the digital revolution. This course will also be especially useful to engineers and scientists actively engaged in performing risk assessments on packaging technologies, performing fault isolation and failure analysis and performing stressing to achieve reliability certification of such technologies.

Their customers need to be connected but providing a “one service fits all” approach is not the most practical when they vary in size, structure, nature of business and needs. The question is not which technology is used, but whether the solution works for them and enables them to communicate effectively for their level of investment.

As today’s technology continues to develop in bringing many new possibilities and methods for providing services to customers, it is now just up to operators to use the available options and offer the right solutions to the market.

This conference will provide the best case studies on how to create the best portfolio of services for your business customers and align yourself with current trends of convergence.

Application of Electrical and Mechanical Systems in the Offshore Industry
    Oct 8, 2008 - Oct 8, 2008,
Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre Aberdeen, Scotland United Kingdom

As the offshore energy industry is expanding, so is the need to improve technologies. Some industries, such as transport and defence, have moved to inclusive systems with automation, broadband communication and control. Although there are a few examples of their use, these advanced techniques are not widely applied in the offshore energy industry.

With the current constraints on manpower and resources, the application of high-calibre advanced technology is widely regarded as the best way to improve performance in exploiting energy reserves in the most difficult and hostile environments on Earth. This seminar will provide the perfect platform for engineers working to provide energy from oil, gas, wind, wave, tide or current to gain a detailed understanding of important developments and new methods from both inside and outside the offshore industry.
