12th IACMAG Conference

The 12th Conference (1 to 6 October 2008, to be held in Goa, India) will address recent developments and relevant issues in computer methods, constitutive models and applications to different areas of Geomechanics, and emerging and important topics, and future needs, documented case studies with integration of theory, laboratory and field tests, and validation procedures. This will be consistent with the continuing theme of IACMAG conferences and the International Journal of Geomechanics, namely Fundamentals through Applications.

The special theme for the 12th International Conference has been chosen as Geomechanics in the Emerging Social & Technological Age. The conference will endeavor to stress on problems raised by the present day society due to rapid industrialization and globalization, in addition to the objectives covered by the previous conferences. The conference aims to focus on some very recent and emerging trends in geomechanics such as mechanics of unsaturated soils, micromechanics, nanomechanics, bio-geo interface, infrastructure geomechanics and geomechanics for ancient monuments.

Pumping Fundamentals Part 1

Parkinson's Disease Clinical Experience Programme

This two-day clinical experience programme will provide delegates with an understanding of Parkinson’s Disease, as well giving them the opportunity to hear directly from patients about the real life experience of living with this condition.

Key concepts concerning the aetiology and the underlying pathology of Parkinson’s Disease will be explained and the spectrum of clinical presentations reviewed. Investigative methods, focusing on imaging, will be addressed along with the differential diagnosis. The values and limitations of these techniques in both clinical practice and research will be evaluated.

Current pharmacological management as well as surgical options will be discussed with specific attention placed on future directions and important innovations in the field.

The challenges of clinical trial design for Parkinson’s Disease therapies will be explored with a focus on patient selection, evaluative methods and key rating scales used in clinical research.

Discussion time and group work will provide opportunities throughout the course for questions and debate.

CSHL/WT Conference on Integrative Approaches to Brain Complexity

Understanding the structural and functional complexity of the vertebrate nervous system is the theme of this meeting. Advances in genomics and proteomics are defining the molecular building blocks that underpin the structural complexity of the brain and it behavioural output. Combining genetic discoveries with anatomical, electrophysiological and behavioural findings, it is now feasible to integrate this knowledge.

This meeting will address approaches ranging from molecular biology to behaving animal studies, from single gene to complex sets of genes, from synapses to networked brain functions. Emphasis will be placed on large scale approaches that generate accesssible molecular and biological databases. Strategies for acquisition of molecular, physiological and behavioural data on a large scale and the analysis and integration of this data will be addressed. In keeping with traditional Cold Spring Harbor meetings, the majority of oral presentations will be drawn from openly submitted abstracts.
