25th Annual International Pittsburgh Coal Conference
Sep 29, 2008 - Oct 2, 2008,
Westin Convention Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania United States

Throughout the world, coal is a major energy source, providing nearly 25% of the world's primary energy consumption. Although coal's share of total energy use was previously expected to decline in the future, the recent high cost of natural gas and petroleum together with projected increasing demand and decreasing reserves of both have created a heightened interest in the use of coal within the United States. However, to maintain this growth, the industry must be responsive to increasing pressures on environmental emissions and global warming as well as improve its public image.

The Twenty-Fifth Annual International Pittsburgh Coal Conference focuses on environmental emissions issues and technologies surrounding the continued use of coal and the development of future coal-based energy plants to achieve near-zero emissions of pollutants, reduced costs, and high thermal efficiency while producing a suite of products to meet future energy market requirements.

Converged Messaging Summit
Sep 29, 2008 - Oct 2, 2008,
Holiday Inn Munich City Centre, Munich, Bayern Germany

Mobile operator messaging revenues are under threat. Operators are rolling out flat rate data packages to encourage mobile internet usage and uptake, which is in turn enabling the availibility of free, ad-funded online messaging on the mobile handset. The potential for this online model to canibalise operator messaging revenues is clear. However, operators have a far closer relationship with their users compared with their online counterparts, boasting the most important user community bar none – the mobile contacts list.

Operators also own the networks over which messages are transported which can be exploited to enable a far richer communication experience for their users. By enriching the messaging experience through implementation of features such as presence, context, personalisation and links with social networking, operators can drive messaging revenues and usage by delivering an enhanced user experience.

But there are still many pitfalls ahead. Interoperability continues to plague the MMS market, preventing huge growth driven by social networking and user generated content for which MMS is surely the most suitable vehicle; mobile email remains a preserve of the blackberry wielding business market and the slow growth of personal instant messaging has left it vulnerable to attack from free to use online offerings.

Digital Asset Preservation: Protecting the Future of Electronic Documents
Sep 29, 2008 - Sep 30, 2008,
Sydney, New South Wales Australia

Organisations are investing increasing amounts of time and resources into digitally preserving information for future reference. However, many do not fully understand the potential risks associated with the long-term preservation and retrieval of digital material, nor how to proactively address these issues now for future risk mitigation.

With the threat of technology obsolescence jeopardising document storage and archiving efforts, organisations need to have an effective strategy in place to protect digital assets. It is crucial to address risk management and disaster recovery concerns and define an approach to managing “born-digital” documents, where no hard copies exist as back-up.

It is crucial to make effective use of classification schemes and metadata when archiving so as to ensure the long term accessibility and authenticity of digital material and to place individual documents in context. It is also necessary to establish policies and processes for file migration and the strategic disposal of documents.

This interactive masterclass will provide key insights on how to:

• Define a strategic approach to the long-term preservation of digital records
• Employ classification schemes and metadata to maintain accessibility and authenticity
• Identify important aspects of legal compliance
• Establish effective disposal policies and processes
• Effectively mitigate risk and tackle the challenges presented by the rate of technology change
