- Patent Protection for Software-Related and Business Related Inventions in Europe and the United States
-
Sep 19, 2008 - Sep 19, 2008,
The Rembrandt London, England, United KingdomSince the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit decision in State Street Bank & Trust Co. v. Signature Financial Group, Inc., 149 F.3d 1368 (Fed. Cir. 1998), in 1998, the public debate has been on going over what type of patent protection should be available for Software-related and Business-related Inventions.
In the U.S. a rather expansive view of what can and should be patent-eligible subject matter is generally held. On the other hand, in Europe a more restrictive view of what can and should be patent-eligible subject matter has been adopted, and frequently challenged. A flurry of activity has been occurring on both sides of the Atlantic to reconsider where the law will and should end up.
Join our distinguished speakers in an informative and provocative presentation on the current state of the law on both sides of the Atlantic, with practical guides on how best to seek and obtain such patent protection to the extent available. - full details

- Cultivating Britons: Culture and Identity in Britain, 1901 to 1936
-
Sep 19, 2008 - Sep 19, 2008,
Buckley Buiding, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, England, United KingdomThe Edwardian period between 1901 and 1910 has, by reason of chronological accident, frequently been treated as a discrete and unique period in the history of Britain. Framed by the death of Queen Victoria and the arms race which foreshadowed the Great War, the long-anticipated reign of Edward VII has since been conceptualized and memorialized in a variety of ways: as the last, tired gasp of ‘Victorianism’; as a prelapsarian ‘long summer’ brutally curtailed by the guns of 1914; or as an authentic experiment with an ambitiously ‘modern’ set of cultural, moral, and political values. The brief, uncoronated reign of Edward VIII is not usually discussed in the same context as that of his grandfather – partly because of its brevity, but also because of the cultural and experiential disjunction assumed to separate them. However, the striking personal similarities between these ‘playboy’ princes, as well as the air of unfulfilled potentiality associated with their respective eras present fruitful starting points for a re-evaluation of the discernible continuities and ruptures in the social and cultural life of Britain in the first three and a half decades of the twentieth century.
Scholars have in recent years made much of the idea of a “long nineteenth century”, and have investigated the twentieth-century remnants and legacies of Victorianism, yet the impact of the Edwardian era has largely been bypassed. The aim of this conference is to reassess British culture across the whole of this period in the light of the Edwardian inheritance. As the title of the conference suggests, we are particularly interested in considering the extent to which an attempt to ‘cultivate Britons’ (often regarded as a distinctively Victorian endeavour) continued into, and metamorphosed during, the early twentieth century. We believe that this idea can most fruitfully be explored by bringing together scholars with research interests in early-twentieth-century British culture from disciplines including History, Literature, Music, Art History, Architecture, Film, and Theology. We therefore invite contributions to a one-day interdisciplinary conference from scholars working in a variety of fields and eager to explore the dynamic constructions of cultural and national identity during the period framed by the two ‘Edwardian’ eras. Papers can deal with any part of this 35-year period, and proposals by postgraduate students and early-career academics will be particularly welcomed. - full details

- 8th Panhellenic Congress of Andrology
-
Sep 19, 2008 - Sep 21, 2008,
Divani Caravel Hotel Athens, GreeceAndrology is a dynamic field with important successes in its recent history and even greater expectations for the future. It is a discipline of great significance, since, along with the closely related specialty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, they constitute the dipole of Reproductive Medicine, the Medicine of the 21st century, which aims to explain the mechanism of the creation of new life and the secrets of fertility, which remains the only way to maintain life on the long term. It is without doubt an appealing field for doctors regardless of their age, full of difficulties, but also the satisfaction of genuine offer to the ailing human, whether this refers to a child with puberty associated disorders, an infertile male or, finally, an aging man. The Hellenic Society of Andrology, the coordinating scientific organization for the promotion of Andrology in Greece organizes for yet another year the Panhellenic Congress of Andrology, with the hope that it will once again prove to be a summoning opportunity for scientists from all disciplines related to Reproductive Health. The participation of colleagues from three historic University Medical School of Greece in the Organizing Committee (i.e. Athens, Thessaloniki and Ioannina) is an additional lucky coincidence that will hopefully contribute towards a successful pluralistic Congress.

- Fast Algorithms for Scientific Computing
-
Sep 19, 2008 - Sep 20, 2008,
Courant Institute, New York University New York, New York United StatesProfessor Olof Widlund has made significant contributions in the field of numerical analysis for more than forty years.
In the last twenty years Olof Widlund's work has focused on developing and unifying the research in domain decomposition. Domain decomposition methods are scalable, efficient methods for the solution of linear systems that arise from the discretization of partial differential equations. Thus work in this area is a combination of mathematical analysis and algorithmic development.
The core of the program will be a two-day meeting consisting of about two dozen scientific lectures covering a wide area of numerical analysis, scientific computing and relevant applications. Contributed papers will be considered for a poster session. - full details
- SNP Meeting/IMA PI Conference: Constitutive Properties of Biomaterials
-
Sep 19, 2008 - Sep 21, 2008,
University of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania United StatesMechanics plays an important function in biology at every length scale. On the molecular level, mechanical properties of DNA play an essential role in gene regulation, recombination, and duplication, while protein and RNA deformability influences many biological processes. The mechanics of membranes, microtubules, and filaments is key to the healthy life of a cell. On cellular level, the cytoskeleton remodeling is a vital function of living cells, and variation of mechanical response in the cells is used to detect cell dysfunction. Cell mobility is an essential mechanical component of wound healing mechanisms. At the tissue level, the failures in the response of tissues to stress are at the core of many injuries and diseases, such as bone fractures, aneurysms, etc.
The goal of the meeting is to facilitate interaction between experts in experimental study of biomaterials on one hand and mathematical modeling and nonlinear continuum mechanics on the other. This interaction will promote the exchange of ideas while enabling new interdisciplinary collaborations that will advance understanding of the role of mechanics in biology. Particular emphasis will be placed on characterizing the response of biomaterials at the continuum level within the framework of finite elasticity and related theories, and the development of new theories of mechanics of living matter accounting for growth, aging, and adaptation. - full details
