- Anti-Popery: The Transatlantic Experience
-
Sep 18, 2008 - Sep 20, 2008,
McNeil Center for Early American Studies, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania United StatesAntagonism towards the pope and his co-religionists was nearly universal in the protestant societies of Europe and colonial America. In recent years historians on both sides of the Atlantic have begun to realize that anti-Catholic fears represented more than blind prejudice or ignorance. Instead, anti-popery was a powerful set of ideas that early modern Europeans used to understand their world and their place in history. We invite proposals for papers on any aspect of anti-popery in Europe or the Americas from approximately 1530-1850.

- Global (Petro) Chemical Plant and Refinery Maintenance
-
Sep 18, 2008 - Sep 19, 2008,
Rome, Lazio ItalyChemical/Petro chemical plants and oil refineries inevitably need to undergo maintenance to ensure that facilities meet their optimal production levels and output. Maintenance is not an option; do without it or do it poorly and it could lead to both health and safety dangers, loss of reputation and possible catastrophes, not to mention huge loss of profits. Technical advancements mean that companies can now implement maintenance strategies which promote operational efficiency and give rise to positive impacts on asset reliability, availability and the general success of the company.
There are however, important issues that need to be addressed: which strategies are best suited to individual operations and how to successfully implement them, choosing, managing and building relationships with contractors, deciding on the right mix on inspection technology, and using the data in an effective manner.
Our Conference is specially designed to address and discuss these challenges as well as offer possible solutions. - full details
- Exhibiting Antiquity Conference
-
Sep 18, 2008 - Sep 19, 2008,
University of London London, England, United KingdomWhat place does the exhibited object have in the reception of classical antiquity? What is at stake in acquiring such objects, in displaying them, in viewing them, in the museum and beyond? This two-day international conference will bring together those working on classical reception studies and English literature, as well as art historians, museologists, curators, archaeologists and intellectual historians to discuss the part played by the display of objects in the reception of the classical world from the eighteenth century to the present.
While the study of reception is flourishing in classics, with research spanning Dante to computer games, the reception of texts has tended to dominate, leaving largely neglected the display of sculpture, pottery and other ancient artefacts. This conference aims to establish exhibited objects as an important aspect of the reception of ancient Greece and Rome. It will provide a forum for discussion of theoretical issues arising from the reception of such objects, as well as the particular challenges facing those involved in planning displays or exhibitions of antiquities. We will also consider the relationship between different modes of display – the object as cast, as souvenir, as authentic antiquity. Speakers will explore such varied topics as the role of exhibited objects in Winckelmann’s periodisation of the antique, the commodification of specific objects, literary responses to collections in Italy and the link between classics, museums and national identity. - full details

- Thinking the Olympics: Modern Bodies, Classical Minds?
-
Sep 18, 2008 - Sep 19, 2008,
Institute of Classical Studies, Senate House, University of London London, England United KingdomThe 2008 Olympics in Beijing, poised between the return of the Games to Athens in 2004, and the future return to London in 2012, present a striking opportunity to reassess the role of the classical tradition in the modern, post-classical Olympic Games.Certain versions of a so-called Hellenic ideal have regularly been a feature of public discourse about the Olympics, and have occasioned much of the inventing of traditions that has surrounded the Games since their revival in the nineteenth century.Classical references were very visible in the 2004 Games, and the Athens celebrations were also accompanied by a number of books that together helped to redefine the understanding of the ancient games and their commemoration in poetry and pottery. The classical figures are considerably more muted in the publicity for the Beijing Games, so that it is legitimate to question how much and under what conditions the classical tradition has further relevance for contemporary Olympics, or contemporary Olympics for the classical tradition.
This interdisciplinary conference invites submissions that consider the versions of ancient Greece legible, or suppressed, in the iconography, histories, literature, and ceremonies, both official and unofficial, of the revived Olympic Games. - full details
