- Intermediate Filaments 2008
-
Sep 7, 2008 - Sep 12, 2008,
Magdalen College, Oxford, England United KingdomThe upcoming Gordon Research Conference on “Intermediate Filaments” will continue to highlight the translational research on human diseases caused by mutations in IF genes in parallel to the basic research on the properties and function of IF proteins. It will focus on the biology and disease conditions of two IF classes: the nuclear lamins and the neurofilament proteins.
The biology of keratins and desmin in relation to disease will be treated to complement insights gained for the former classes of IF proteins. More general topics such as the role of IF proteins in signaling, their role as biomechanical elements of cells, and their integration into the cytoskeleton via associated proteins are also covered.
In addition to the invited speakers, a considerable number of speakers will be selected from the submitted abstracts. Importantly, the program has been scheduled to leave ample time for discussion during the individual sessions. - full details
- Molecular & Ionic Clusters 2008
-
Sep 7, 2008 - Sep 12, 2008,
Centre Paul Langevin Maurienne, Rhone Alpes FranceThe 2008 Molecular and Ionic Clusters Gordon Research Conference will be one of the most exciting and important cluster science meetings of the year. The conference will be held at the Centre Paul Langevin in Aussois, in the French Alps, from September 7-12, 2008. This site is spectacular, with excellent opportunities for hiking and other outdoors activities.
The conference will cover the spectroscopy, dynamics, and reactivity of a wide range of cluster types and sizes, including helium nanodroplets, metal clusters, ionic clusters, hydrogen-bonded networks, and clusters involving biological molecules. Special sessions on cold-molecule collisions and aerosols are also planned. Both experimental and theoretical aspects of cluster science will be well-represented at the conference.
We expect to bring together an outstanding group of scientists at the forefront of cluster research. We are particularly keen to increase participation from post-docs and graduate students and will make every effort to raise funds to help them to participate.
The preliminary program listing chairs and invited speakers is given below. In addition, short "hot-topic" talks will be included in each session. The application procedure for those who wish to give such talks will be posted in early 2008.
Please feel free to contact the conference co-chairs, Daniel Neumark (dneumark@berkeley.edu) or Jeremy Hutson (J.M.Hutson@durham.ac.uk) for further information. - full details

- 2nd ACM/IEEE International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras (ICDSC-08)
-
Sep 7, 2008 - Sep 11, 2008,
Stanford University Stanford, California United StatesAfter the successful first meeting in Vienna, the second ACM/IEEE International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras will be held September 7-11, 2008 at Stanford University.
Distributed smart cameras combine techniques from computer vision, distributed processing, sensor networks, and embedded computing. Technological advances in the design of sensors and processors have facilitated the development of efficient embedded vision-based techniques. Design of scalable, network-based applications based on high-bandwidth data such as images requires a change of paradigm in the processing methodologies, thus creating opportunities for designing distributed and collaborative vision-based techniques. As a result, novel smart environment applications can be enabled that are interpretive, context aware, and user centric in nature. - full details
