Workshop on Mashups, Enterprise Mashups and Lightweight Composition on the Web (MEM&LCW 2008)
Sep 1, 2008 - Sep 4, 2008,
Auckland, Aukland, New Zealand

Today's business world relies on a range of sophisticated IT solutions. Due to the sophistication, business and IT have separated in many organizations. That separation has left a gap between the two and has led to high frequencies of IT project escalation and failure. While the gap between business and IT does not pose a difficulty for highly structured business problems and processes that are stable in time, it is a major obstacle for all other problems and processes.

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) along with Web 2.0 technologies and paradigms, such as mashups and lightweight composition, are believed to provide a handle to overcome this situation and enable a potential candidate for a solution that will be essential in bridging the gap between business and IT.

TOPICS

The topics of the workshop include, but are not limited to the following:
* Governance of mashup technologies
* Lightweight information integration
* Mashups and legacy applications
* Mashups in process aware information systems
* Security of widgets, gadgets, and related technologies
* Security of enterprise information in mashups
* Standards and protocols for lightweight composition

Research and Development Management
Sep 1, 2008 - Sep 3, 2008,
IMechE, London, England, United Kingdom

Managing R&D organisations and concentrating on their productivity and excellence offers a unique set of problems and unusual challenges that are amplified when the team is scattered spatially in a global economy. This uniqueness arises primarily from two basic facts: (1) the character of the enterprise, and (2) the highly-specialised, articulate, and autonomous people involved in R&D. As American economist and Nobel laureate Kenneth J. Arrow stated, "The central economic fact about the processes of invention and research is that they are devoted to the production of information." Obviously, the generation of information requires research and, in addition to the R&D organisations' focus on information, research involves considerable uncertainty because the outcome can never be predicted perfectly from the different inputs used. It will, therefore, become clear in this course that managing an R&D organisation is largely the art of integrating the efforts of diverse, creative, intelligent, and independent individuals. The ideas presented in this course consist of the condensed works of a multitude of experts focusing on ways to improve the productivity of R&D and foster excellence and innovation in organisations.

Barcelona Conference on Asymptotic Statistics (BAS 2008)
Sep 1, 2008 - Sep 5, 2008,
Centre de Recerca Matemàtica ,Campus de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Bellaterra, Cerdanyola del Valles, Catalonia Spain

Statistics already keeps a central place in the modern Information Society. Many procedures related to data processing require an experiment to be designed, with subsequent retrieving, organising, processing and interpreting information using statistical methods. New fields have been initialised in Statistics in last years, especially due to recent challenges in Biomedicine, Bioinformatics and Life Sciences in general. Since large amounts of information have often to be processed, asymptotic methods in statistics become more and more useful.

The Barcelona Conference on Asymptotic Statistics 2008 (BAS2008) continues the line opened in 2003 when the first conference took place. The scientific scope of the conference can be summarised in the following main lines:

• To analyse asymptotic procedures related to time series, that is, to discrete-time stochastic processes. Asymptotic methods are used here in order to select a model, that can be parametric or non-parametric, and to solve a wide range of problems on prediction of the behaviour of a system based on discrete data.
• To discuss asymptotic methods related to continuous-time models. The knowledge of these methods enables us to design an appropriate sampling scheme for different kinds of data.
• The third perspective, feeding the latter ones and fed back by them at the same time, is that of applications of asymptotic methods to practical problems. We would like to focus on multiple applications of asymptotic statistics, ranging from classical (for example, in signal processing) to the most recent ones in Biomedical Sciences.
