The main aim of the conference is to deal with public discourse on diversity, cross cultural communication and at the same time the lack of discussion about underestimated aspects of mutuality, including the post colonial, post imperial, post socialist, and post racial issues. Until now, anthropologists have not considered mutuality a significant concept in understanding diversity. The conference will attempt to explore different ethnographic instances of mutuality, especially those of mutual borrowing of practices and beliefs, for example processes of religious and cultural syncretism, creolization or acculturation, related to imperialism, colonialism or modern cultural flow, etc., mutual trust or mutual recognition.

Virtual machine monitors are reaching wide-spread adoption in a variety of operating systems as well as scientific educational and operational usage areas. With their low overhead, hypervisors allows for concurrently running large numbers of virtual machines, providing each encapsulation, isolation and in the case of Xen, network-wide CPU migratability. VMMs offer a network-wide abstraction layer of individual machine resources to OS environments, thereby opening whole new cluster-and grid high-performance computing (HPC) architectures and HPC services options. With VMMs finding applications in HPC environments, these workshops aim to bring together researchers and practitioners active on virtualization in distributed and high-performance cluster and grid computing environments. The workshops will be one day in length, composed of 20 min paper presentations, each followed by 10 min discussion sections. Presentations may be accompanied with interactive demonstrations. The workshop will end with a 30 min panel discussion by presenters.

Norwegian rock singer Sivert Høyem will top the bill at the ONS 2008 opening concert in the Stavanger Concert Hall on Tuesday 26 August.

ESCRTs – from cell biology to pathogenesis

Proteins that make up the ESCRT (endosomal sorting complex required for transport) machinery are present in all eukaryotic organisms. They are probably best characterised as having an important role in the targeting of ubiquitylated membrane proteins to the lumenal vesicles of endosomal multivesicular bodies. However, many other roles for ESCRT proteins have now emerged. Specifically, it is widely accepted that deadly human pathogens including HIV-1, Ebola virus, Hepatitis B virus and other enveloped viruses require the ESCRT machinery to mediate the separation of the nascent viral particle from the infected cell. More recently, it was shown that ESCRT proteins are involved in essential aspects of cell division and genetic studies have implicated the mutation of ESCRT genes in neurodegenerative disorders. This meeting will be of interest to those working in diverse fields and will provide a platform to identify unresolved issues and discuss ways of tackling these problems.

33rd Sapporo Symposium on Partial Differential Equations

Over the years we have seen the rapid development in the field of partial differential equations (PDE) which continues to expand further in scope and depth. While much have been achieved through new insights and refined techniques, it is almost impossible these days to understand the essence of idea which lies outside of their specialties even within the field of PDE. As it is generally true that a method developed for one problem can be applied to a very different set of problems, it is important that the general idea may be shared among wider audience in the field.

Our aim is to boost interaction among different branches of partial differential equations so that researchers may gain access to new developments in other fields. For this purpose we arrange about six survey lectures which are followed by long discussion session each time. Though the choice of topics is made according to the preference of the faculty members of Hokkaido University, we carefully choose the speakers so that it remains inclusive in its scope and so that the symposium is not merely a workshop of one particular research group.

Bayesian methods have become increasingly popular across a broad range of statistical applications, stimulated by the development of efficient computational methods such as MCMC. Sample survey inference, however, is still largely based on the randomization distribution over repeated sampling, with models being used only as a last resort, such as in small area estimation or when compensating for measurement errors or nonresponse.

The aim of this meeting is to highlight the potential advantages of Bayesian methodology and discuss and illustrate its possible applications in diverse areas of sample survey design and inference. The meeting will begin with a 1.5 days short course, followed by a 2.5 days conference, consisting of invited and contributed research and applied papers and a special panel discussion.
