- Theory and Applications of Computational Chemistry in 2008 (TACC2008)
-
Aug 24, 2008 - Aug 28, 2008,
Songjiang New Century Grand Hotel, Shanghai, Shanghai (munic.) ChinaSince the first applications of computer in chemistry in the early 1960's, "computational chemistry" has evolved today to be at the vanguard of most advances in chemistry, material science, physics, geology, biology and medicine. Its impact in chemistry can be noted from the fact that within four decades of its existence, five of the top ten most highly cited publications in 125 years of JACS are related to computational chemistry.
In addition to technical advances in computers and algorithms, the phenomenal impact of computational chemistry is due to the dedicated and sustained efforts of many individuals. In this regard, we felt that it would be befitting to organize a symposium "Theory and Applications of Computational Chemistry" in 2008 gathering a large number of the world'sleading exponents of computational chemistry. This event also follows previous successful TACC conferences, for example, the 2004 TACC conference in Korea. - full details

- Neurobiology Of Brain Disorders 2008
-
Aug 24, 2008 - Aug 29, 2008,
Magdalen College, Oxford, England United KingdomThe goal of the proposed conference is to assemble a group of scientists who will discuss the molecular basis and pathophysiological consequences of brain disorders, especially neurodegenerative diseases, and who will interpret the disease processes in the context of the rapid advances in fundamental neuroscience that are currently being made. In this fashion, the conference is meant to provide a platform for an international interdisciplinary discussion that unites scientists who work on basic molecular and physiological mechanisms of brain function with researchers who study specific disease processes and/or are interested in translational approaches. Specifically, the conference has the following goals:
* To identify commonalities and differences between diverse pathogenetic processes
* To discuss the molecular and physiological components of neural circuits, and to examine changes in the circuits involved in specific brain diseases
* To assess approaches to investigate, understand, and possibly treat neurodegenerative and other neurological and psychiatric diseases
The overall format of the conference will be to interweave presentations of basic neuroscience and of specific diseases in order to foster discussion between these two approaches. This format is prompted by our concern that one of the major current limitations in the overall field of brain disease research is its relative isolation from basic neuroscience. For example, to our knowledge there is no ongoing conference series that provides a venue connecting neurodegenerative disease research to basic neuroscience. Thus we feel that there is a real need for such a meeting. - full details

- 8th International Workshop on Data Mining in Bioinformatics (BIOKDD '08)
-
Aug 24, 2008 - Aug 27, 2008,
Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada United StatesBioinformatics is the science of managing, mining, and interpreting information from biological data. Various genome projects have contributed to an exponential growth in DNA and protein sequence databases. Advances in high-throughput technology such as microarrays and mass spectrometry have further created the fields of functional genomics and proteomics, in which one can monitor quantitatively the presence of multiple genes, proteins, metabolites, and compounds in a given biological state. The ongoing influx of these data, the presence of biological answers to data observed despite noises, and the gap between data collection and knowledge curation have collectively created exciting opportunities for data mining researchers.

- SPE Forum: Steam Generation
-
Aug 24, 2008 - Aug 29, 2008,
Kananaskis, Alberta CanadaSteam generation has a long history in the petroleum industry. In recent years, the interest in steam generation has increased due to the interest in heavy oil production. The cost of steam generation and the related water supply and treating facilities can be a significant project cost.
Topics to be discussed include the following:
• What new technologies are in development that will make steam generation more cost effective?
• Has superheated steam technology evolved to a point to make it a viable option for field use?
• Can produced water be used as a water source? Issues related to other water sources: sea, well, and surface (including rain)
• Is steam the appropriate method to deliver heat to the production face? How do we pick the appropriate steam pressure required? Should we consider steam compression as an alternative to superheat? What quality steam (% water) is required at the production interface?
• What new water treating technologies in development could be used? What purity is required for the water, and are there alternate technologies that should be considered?
• Can refinery/utility type boilers be modified for use in the field?
