- Semiconductor Reliability Short Course
-
Aug 19, 2008 - Aug 22, 2008,
Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaSemiconductor reliability is at a crossroads. In the past, reliability meant discovering, characterizing and modeling failure mechanisms and determining their impact on the reliability of the circuit. Today, reliability can involve tradeoffs between performance and reliability, assessing the impact of new materials, dealing with limited margins, etc. Analysis and experimentation is now performed at the wafer level instead of the packaging level. This requires knowledge of subjects such as: design of experiments, testing, technology, processing, materials science, chemistry, and customer expectations. While reliability levels are at an all-time high level in the industry, rapid changes may quickly cause reliability to deteriorate. Your company needs competent engineers and scientists to help solve these problems.
Semiconductor Reliability is a 3 day course that offers detailed instruction on a variety of subjects pertaining to semiconductor reliability. This course is designed for every manager, engineer, and technician concerned with reliability in the semiconductor field, using semiconductor components, or supplying tools to the industry. - full details

Many archaea inhabit extreme environments, and the mechanisms of adaptation are uniquely fascinating and important, with many biotechnological and industrial applications. Increasingly, archaea are recognised as an important and abundant component of the biosphere. This meeting will focus on archaeal DNA replication, recombination and repair, genetics and gene regulation. It will highlight recent advances in the field with implications for our understanding of archaeal molecular biology and the evolution of eukaryotic information processing pathways.

- Aboriginal Literacy: Bridging the Distance to Learning • A Snapshot from Canada
-
Aug 19, 2008 - Aug 19, 2008,
United StatesThe Sioux Hudson Literacy Council is making groundbreaking strides to reach adult Aboriginal learners who reside in remote, isolated communities of Northwestern Ontario, Canada. This literacy organization services learners within the community and surrounding area. The 35 communities, which have a total population of approximately 35,000 people, are often only accessible by plane in the summer months and ice roads during the winter. The Aboriginal community members have not had the privilege of strong, structured educational backgrounds and have not had the opportunity to improve their existing literacy and employability skills. There are currently programs in these communities offered to high school and college students via video- and audio-conferencing. It appears however, that individuals who would benefit the most, the people who need assistance to attain the literacy levels required to achieve success at the high school and college levels are those who have had few educational opportunities.

- Conference in Honour of Peter Orlik
-
Aug 19, 2008 - Aug 22, 2008,
Fields Institute, University of Toronto Toronto, Ontario CanadaPeter Orlik's work has been influential for a particularly broad mathematical community: his seventy-some publications to date include five books, and his focus has included Seifert manifolds, singularities, reflection groups and invariant theory, braids, hyperplane arrangements, and hypergeometric integrals. The theory of hyperplane arrangements should receive special mention since, together with Hiroaki Terao and Louis Solomon, Peter Orlik pioneered the area and established many of the foundational results. In doing so, they constructed a fertile meeting point for algebra, topology, and combinatorics.
The aim of this conference is to bring together individuals in some of the various areas interconnected by Peter’s legacy. This is both to facilitate ongoing collaborations in some of the most exciting areas spawned by his work, and also to encourage new relationships between specialists with hitherto undiscovered common ground. In particular, we hope to attract a good number of graduate students and recent PhDs both from Ontario and further afield. - full details

Aug 19, 2008 - Aug 21, 2008,
Museum of Natural Sciences IMAX Theater Houston, Texas United StatesThe Petroleum Group of the Geological Society of London and the Society for Sedimentary Geology are privileged to collaborate with the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences and acknowledge the support of co-sponsors to present this world-class 3-day international technical conference.
The conference “Rift renaissance: stretching the crust and extending exploration frontiers” provides an important technical forum to challenge rift model paradigms. These paradigms underpin the fundamental understanding and exploration of, pre-cursor rift basins and continental rift basins. Numerous aspects of crustal evolution and lithospheric extension models remain contentious and new sub-surface datasets have highlighted important apparent paradoxes. Heat flow, subsidence and passive margin formation are subject to both temporal and spatial anomalies related to rift processes. The technical program is uniquely constructed to share the most recent observations, interpretations and models from leading industry and academic contributors. The meeting will address the understanding of rift basins and constrain our comprehension of rift-related petroleum geology. - full details
