Brain Energy Metabolism & Blood Flow
Aug 17, 2008 - Aug 22, 2008,
Proctor Academy, Andover, New Hampshire United States

Vision of the GRCs on Brain Energy Metabolism and Blood Flow:

Brain blood flow and metabolism are vital to the normal mammalian nervous system and provides the basis for functional imaging.

Over the last decade, dramatic progress has been made in molecular biology, biophysics and genetics that impact our understanding of brain energy metabolism, neural organization, cell signaling and vascular regulation.

In addition, new technologies have emerged to measure blood flow and metabolism with high spatial and temporal resolution. The stage is set to use the methodological progress to address fundamental issues related to the organization of brain function, blood flow and metabolic activity.

We anticipate that progress in this field will drive new discoveries in the experimental and clinical neurosciences and impact diagnosis and treatment of stroke and other neurodegenerative disorder.

The biannual Gordon research conference is devoted to presentations of frontline research of brain metabolism, cell signaling, cell-cell interactions and vascular regulation in the normal and injured brain.

The conference is a unique opportunity for experts and newcomers alike to exchange state-of-the-art advances in methodology and concepts, as well as outline promising avenues for collaborative research.

For the 3rd GRC on Brain Energy Metabolism and Blood Flow, the overall general theme turns around oxygen, blood flow and mitochondria in normal and pathological brain function.

CO2 Assimilation In Plants: Genome To Biome
Aug 17, 2008 - Aug 22, 2008,
University of New England, Biddeford, Maine United States

The 2008 conference covers basic plant research related to photosynthesis and the subsequent regulation and engineering of carbon assimilation. Approaches that range from post-genomic technologies and systems biology, through to fundamental biochemistry, physiology and molecular biology are integrated within ecological and agronomic contexts. As such, the meeting provides the rare opportunity of a single venue for discussing all aspects of the “carbon-side” of photosynthesis - from genome to biome. The 2008 conference will include an emphasis on the central role of carbon assimilation by plants for developing new sources of bioenergy and for achieving a carbon-neutral planet.

Industrial Ecology 2008
Aug 17, 2008 - Aug 22, 2008,
Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire United States

The conference brings together leading established scientists, working in diverse settings, with future leaders in our field. Gordon Research Conferences (GRCs) are unique among scientific meetings for their prestige, quality of content, small size, the diversity of participants, research at the frontiers of science often still unpublished, and a schedule allowing for extended discussion and informal interactions.

The 2008 GRC will be held at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire, USA. Conference attendance is limited to 120 participants, so early applications are encouraged as is the submission of abstracts for posters, which play an important role at a GRC. A number of fellowships for partial funding will be available, especially for early career scientists and colleagues from outside the US and EU. The accommodations at Colby-Sawyer are comfortable, and the setting provides abundant opportunity for recreation and relaxation in the afternoons.

10th International Water Distribution System Analysis Conference (WDSA 2008)
Aug 17, 2008 - Aug 20, 2008,
Kruger National Park, Kruger, Eastern Cape South Africa

A Unique Experience
There is no doubt that WDSA2008 will be a conference with a difference. We will be able to host three parallel sessions with ease. However, one of the challenges facing the Organising Committee is that the conference venue cannot accommodate a plenary session for all 150 to 200 delegates expected to attend the conference. For this reason, the conference opening ceremony will be held on the Sunday evening in an amphitheatre normally used to show nature movies. After the official welcome and conference opening, a keynote address will be delivered on the water supply challenges facing developing countries. This will be followed by an open air meet-and-greet function around large bonfires.

Other unique features planned for the conference, include the following:

* Time in the programme for organised game drives (optional) before and after the conference sessions (the best times to view the game are early mornings and late afternoons).
* A typical South African braai (barbeque) with a talk by a top wildlife photographer.
* A conference dinner at the Skukuza golf club (which is unfenced) with a talk on the stars in the Southern Hemisphere.
* Delegates will have most meals together, and there will be ample opportunities for discussions and networking.
* A family-friendly environment and programme for delegates who want to bring their families.
* An optional behind-the-scenes tour of the civil engineering challenges and projects in the Park.
