- Biomineralization 2008
-
Aug 10, 2008 - Aug 15, 2008,
Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire United StatesThe objective of the Gordon Research Conference on Biomineralization is to explore the biological, chemical and physical controls on biomineralization in vertebrate, invertebrate, plant and biomimetic systems. Particular attention is paid to the consequences of interactions at the organic-inorganic interface.
The interest in this topic stems from the important role that biomineralization processes play in biology, biotechnology, medicine, chemistry, interfacial science, materials science, and nanotechnology.
Over the years attendees of this conference have witnessed the spectacular advances made in the field of biomineralization, which have been, in part, due to the interactions and collaborations stimulated by this GRC.
The goal of this year's GRC is to bring together chemists, physicists, biologists, physicians and engineers, who would otherwise not overlap on the conference circuit, in a setting that promotes cross-disciplinary fertilization of new ideas. In doing so, our intent is to create the premier venue to discuss fundamental and applied aspects of biomineralization that intersect biology, chemistry and materials science. - full details

We anticipate an exciting meeting with invited oral sessions that will cover cellular and genetic controls on mineral formation, in vitro models of mineralization, interactions and molecular contacts between macromolecular and mineral components, pathological mineralization, macromolecular scaffolds for materials synthesis and organization, new directions in tissue engineering, biomineral architecture in marine systems, the link between architecture and function, and biomineralization through time. Special emphasis will be placed on novel unpublished results, new experimental techniques, and the role of simulation and modeling. - full details
- Membranes: Materials & Processes 2008
-
Aug 10, 2008 - Aug 15, 2008,
Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire, United StatesThe 2008 Gordon Research Conference on Membranes: Materials and Processes will be one of the premier meetings in membrane science and technology. The technical program includes sessions on nanotechnology, biological and environmental applications, membranes for energy efficiency and energy production, novel techniques for membrane formation, and molecular simulations and modeling. Jacob Israelachvili, one of the world's leading researchers on colloidal and intermolecular forces, will give the Thursday night Keynote Lecture. The poster session will provide opportunities for presentation and discussion of important contributions in other areas of membrane science and technology. A Graduate Student Research Seminar will be held on the weekend prior to the GRC meeting to provide young researchers an opportunity to present their work and network with other membranologists. Funds have been specifically raised to support graduate student, presenter, and participant travel to both the Seminar and the GRC meeting. Please contact the conference chairs for more information.

- Mitochondria & Chloroplasts 2008
-
Aug 10, 2008 - Aug 15, 2008,
University of New England, Biddeford, Maine United StatesThe 2008 Gordon Research Conference on Mitochondria and Chloroplasts will assemble a broad and international group of cellular and molecular biologists and geneticists investigating a large range of fundamental problems related to the biology of these organelles in animal, plant and fungal cells.
This field has witnessed an extraordinary expansion in recent years, fueled in part by the discovery of the role of mitochondria in human disease and ageing, by the identification of novel factors involved in organelle division, movement, signaling and acclimation to changing environmental conditions, and by the powerful tools of organelle proteomics.
The present conference will highlight recent progress in the elucidation of molecular mechanisms of organelle biogenesis including regulation of gene expression, organellar protein import, assembly and turnover of respiratory and photosynthetic complexes, bidirectional signaling between organelles and nucleus, organelle morphology and fusion/fission dynamics.
We will also highlight the latest progress in mechanisms of disease and ageing/senescence in animals and plants - full details
- Neuroethology: Behavior, Evolution & Neurobiology
-
Aug 10, 2008 - Aug 15, 2008,
Magdalen College, Oxford, England United KingdomThis conference will focus on the evolution of neural circuits underlying species-specific behavior. In the spirit of the Gordon Conferences, the meeting is meant to foster intense discussion with the intent to push the frontiers of the field. Each speaker is is being given 20 minutes to speak to be followed by 15-20 minutes of discussion. These will not be conventional data-driven talks; rather, the speakers will address the central questions of the session using their own work and the work of others in their field to illustrate their ideas.
