Defects In Semiconductors
Aug 3, 2008 - Aug 8, 2008,
Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire United States

Continuing its tradition of excellence, this Gordon Conference will focus on research at the forefront of the field of defects in homogeneous and structured semiconductors. The conference will have a strong emphasis on the control of defects during growth and processing, with an increases emphasis on nanostructures as compared to previous conferences. Electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of bulk, thin film, and nanoscale semiconductors will be discussed in detail. In contrast to many conferences, which tend to focus on specific semiconductors, this conference deals with defects in a broad range of bulk and nanoscale electronic materials. This approach has proved to be extremely fruitful for advancing fundamental understanding in emerging materials such as wide-band-gap semiconductors, doped nanoparticles, and organic semiconductors. Presentations of state-of-the-art theoretical methods will contribute to a fundamental understanding of atomic-scale phenomena. The program consists of about twenty invited talks, with plenty of discussion time, and a number of contributed poster sessions. Because of the large amount of discussion time, the conference provides an ideal forum for dealing with topics that are new and/or controversial.

The title, authors, and a brief abstract of your poster should be sent to the vice-chair Shengbai Zhang by July 13, 2008.

University of New England, Biddeford, Maine United States

This Gordon Research Conference focuses a cross-disciplinary look at the highly specialized and structurally and functionally heterogeneous vascular endothelium.

The interconnected endothelial network traverses every organ, providing not only a highly interactive fluid phase interface, as a critical component of normal organ physiology, but endothelium also participates in pathological processes of human diseases ranging from cancer and inflammation to diabetes, atherosclerosis and fibrosis.

In the tradition of the two preceeding conferences, this third conference will explore diagnostic and therapeutic hypotheses that can be tested with emerging technologies and therapeutic modalities. Fields ranging from developmental biology, immunology, genomics, proteomics, hematology, oncology, pulmonary cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, gastroenterology, neuroscience, nephrology, transplant biology stem cell biology and diabetes will be represented in highly integrative sessions. World leading researchers have been assembled to address topics that include: 1) the mediators of injury, dysfunction and cytoprotection in endothelial pathobiology, 2) the function of endothelium in immune organs, 3) specialization of structure and function in the pulmonary circulation, 4) endothelial progression from progenitors to senescence, 5) endothelial transcriptional networks and epigenetics, 6) imaging the endothelium, 7) the blood brain barrier and 8) renal microvascular function and dysfunction.

Emphasis in discussion periods and in poster discussions will be placed on drawing parallels and contrasting patterns from disparate disciplines, to provide new testable hypotheses.

We anticipate that the conference will serve, as its predecessors have, to catalyze further definition of the future of this rapidly moving integrative field.

Green Chemistry 2008
Aug 3, 2008 - Aug 8, 2008,
Bates College, Lewiston, Maine United States

The primary goal of the conference is to bring together excellent scientists from industry and academia to exchange ideas at the cutting-edge of Green Chemistry. Green chemistry (also environmentally benign or sustainable chemistry) applies innovation to the design and realisation of chemical products and processes that: have a smaller environmental impact with regards to wastes produced in both manufacture and use; are produced in an energy-efficient manner with the least possible intrinsic hazard; and have been designed for inherent safety for human health and the environment. Green chemistry is driving innovation in both academia and industry and has vastly improved competitiveness in some leading industries. It is one of the few areas of chemistry where the drive for novel research solutions in academia is equalled by industry. As such this is also an excellent conference for younger scientists and students as well as more established researchers in the field.

Mechanisms Of Epilepsy & Neuronal Synchronization
Aug 3, 2008 - Aug 8, 2008,
Colby College, Colby College, Waterville, Maine United States

The main goals of the study of epilepsy are to 1) to understand the underlying injury- or genetic-induced changes in brain function linking a brain perturbation to the subsequent processes that generate an increase in seizure predisposition (epileptogenesis), as well as 2) identify the mechanisms underlying synchronous electrical discharges in neuronal networks (seizure generation).

Both of these processes involve plastic changes in neuron and/or circuit behavior, which is the theme of the 2008 Conference, Neuroplasticity in Epilepsy.

A better understanding of both epileptogenesis and seizure generation are necessary in order to develop more effective and less toxic treatments and cures for epilepsy.

A unique, intellectually challenging aspect of epilepsy research arises from the fact that it encompasses virtually all major levels of biological organization, from genes and ion channels to circuits and behavior.

The major purpose of this Gordon conference is to bring together neurophysiologists, molecular biologists, geneticists, developmental neuroscientists, and neuroanatomists working on basic mechanisms related either directly or indirectly to seizure generation to synthesize current advances and to set the stage for future discoveries.

In addition to our invited speakers at the main meeting, 8 short talks will be selected from submitted abstracts, one to two weeks prior to the start of the meeting

Plant & Fungal Cytoskeleton 2008
Aug 3, 2008 - Aug 8, 2008,
Il Ciocco, Lucca, Toscana Italy

The cytoskeleton is intricately involved in many aspects of cellular physiology including mitosis, cytokinesis, polarity determination, organelle placement, and directed cell expansion. The Plant and Fungal Cytoskeleton meeting seeks to gain new knowledge from the study and comparison of these branches of the phylogenetic tree. Research on the plant and fungal cytoskeletons has become particularly exciting in recent years. With the explosion in molecular techniques it is possible to clone genes for numerous cytoskeletal proteins and their associated regulatory proteins and motor molecules, and to examine their functions in living cells. There have also been significant innovations in microscopy and cell manipulation procedures and together these methods have revealed exciting new mechanisms. Topics in 2008 to be covered include the functional analysis of mitotic forces and the molecular motors that generate them, elucidation of cell cycle regulation of cytoskeletal organization and dynamics, cytoskeletal protein structure-function relationships, organelle biogenesis and segregation, generation of polarity and cytokinesis, cytoskeletal and membrane interactions, and microtubule organizing centers. In addition, cytoskeletal properties of parasites will be covered to understand the differences in life style required as a parasite.

2nd National Conference of the Men's Advisory Network,Inc.
Aug 3, 2008 - Aug 6, 2008,
Esplanade Hotel, Fremantle, Western Australia Australia

The MAN 2008 Conference will build on the achievements of the first conference held in 2006 in identifying issues that need to be addressed by governments and other agencies, the community and the many groups working on behalf of men and boys.

The needs of men for specific services in health, parenting, relationships, work-life balance, mental health and so many other areas are not being adequately met. Unlike the hard won service provisions for women, there is no coordinated policy framework for men.

Awareness of the needs of men and boys is low and poorly understood and promotion of the benefits to the broader community is inadequate in helping men lead better lives.

As well as influencing policy and decision makers, the Conference will be an important learning experience for all those who work with men and boys.

It will examine the making of men through all stages from babies to blokes, focusing on what we can do to enrich the journey - and care for those whose path is especially difficult.
