Borders are among the most ubiquitous features of social life. They help to define who we are, shape our sense of the world, and contour our surroundings. Borders and boundary maintenance can serve both negative and positive goals, for example serving as both sites for the reproduction of, and resistance to, inequalities. On the one hand, creating and maintaining borders between nations, communities, and groups form the basis for some of the most violent conflicts historically and presently. Boundary-drawing processes are also at work in the construction of social problems, as distinctions are made between deviancy and normalcy, illegitimate and legitimate acts. Borders between academic disciplines are also policed and hotly contested. On the other hand,demands for the protection of the physical integrity of self, community, or nation include the goal of ensuring personal, social, and cultural freedoms. These appeals for the respect for borders include calls for the right to self-governance by native peoples, and the right to bodily integrity by feminist, transgender, intersexed, anti-violence, and anti-sexist activists.

he particular focus of this theme is on the dynamic interplay between ontogeny and phylogeny. In other words, how do new abilities and skills that emerge during development influence the path of evolution, and how do subsequent evolutionary changes help to create new developmental trajectories? This is a question that fits well within the mission of epigenetic robotics, as it spans not only a wide range of research areas and academic disciplines (e.g., biology, psychology, AI and machine learning, linguistics, anthropology, etc.) but also a broad spectrum of spatial and temporal scales (e.g., neurons, brains, social communities, cultures, etc.).

We are especially interested in submissions that will enhance the emerging dialog between evolutionary and developmental perspectives. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

* Artificial embryology
* Morphogenesis, differentiation, and regulation
* Behavioral inheritance and social learning
* The evolution of language acquisition
* Phylogenetic constraints on perceptual processing (e.g., face perception)
* Neuroplasticity and the evolution of cognition
* Evolutionary influences on mother-infant bonding
* Modularity of mind (evolutionary constraints on neural processing)
* Tool-use and problem-solving in humans, non-human primates, and machines

ABG meetings have always proved to be a valuable forum for the discussion of hot issues in Brachytherapy.

NAASWCH 2008

The 2008 conference of the North American Association for the Study of Welsh Culture and History will take place from Thursday, July 31, to Saturday, August 2, 2008, on the campus of Victoria College in the University of Toronto. The conference will be sponsored by the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies, the Centre for Medieval Studies, and the Celtic Studies Program of St. Michael's College.

The conference will feature a wide variety of concurrent sessions, including a session of papers by students in Celtic Studies from the University of Toronto, and a brown-bag reading by Welsh writer John Sam Jones on Friday. Friday night we have scheduled a Welsh-themed banquet at Victoria College. Toronto is home to a wonderful collection of world-class restaurants, so we have left Saturday evening open. A list of restaurants in the vicinity of Victoria College will be included with registration materials, and any Torontonian will be happy to tell you about his/her favourite!
