Computational Chemistry 2008
Jul 27, 2008 - Aug 1, 2008,
Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts United States

The Computational Chemistry GRC has been held biennially since 1986, with chairs alternating between academia and industry. The conference draws a mix of participants from industry, academia, and government covering the full spectrum of computational chemistry -- from ab initio quantum chemistry and quantum dynamics through classical simulation of liquids, biopolymers and materials to docking, virtual screening, and cheminformatics. The 2008 Conference will keep to the traditional GRC format: talks and posters will focus on new, unpublished work; extensive time will be set aside for discussion; and poster sessions will allow participants to show their work and discuss it in detail.

The 2008 conference program will focus on new computational chemistry methods for industrial applications in drug discovery, materials science, and nanotechnology. In addition to general sections on quantum mechanics (topics such as dispersion and local hybrid methods in DFT), classical simulation (focusing on sampling methods and free energy calculations), and cheminformatics, special sections are planned for “Physical Methods in Docking”, “Open Boundary Multiscale Modelling” and “Biomolecular Electrostatics”.

Sensory Coding And The Natural Environment 2008
Jul 27, 2008 - Aug 1, 2008,
Il Ciocco, Lucca, Toscana Italy

he scientific theme of the conference is the encoding and processing of complex natural environmental stimuli by biological systems. The conference is intended to bring together neuroscientists and psychologists interested in understanding the representation and use of such information in the brain, with researchers from engineering, physics, mathematics and other quantitative disciplines who are interested in characterizing the structure of natural sensory signals (images, sounds, odors, etc).

Traditionally, neuroscientists and psychologists have used relatively simple, "controlled" stimuli (e.g., sine-wave gratings, pure tones, spots, clicks, taps or vibration to the skin, etc) to probe the response properties of sensory neurons and characterize perceptual abilities. This approach has been successful at determining basic stimulus selectivities of neurons and in elucidating circuit mechanisms. But processing in neural circuits is highly non-linear and adaptive, so circuits can react quite differently to natural stimuli and experiments using artificial stimuli are often of limited usefulness in predicting these responses. Neural circuits are presumably encoding or extracting certain spatio-temporal patterns from the input stream, but one cannot discover the nature of these patterns by simply probing with one element at a time drawn from a limited set. Since the process of evolution has presumably built sensory systems in order to process signals from the natural environment, it seems natural that these signals can provide clues, or even be used as stimuli, in the study of sensory systems.

Three Dimensional Electron Microscopy 2008
Jul 27, 2008 - Aug 1, 2008,
Il Ciocco, Lucca, Toscana Italy

This conference is the main event in the field of three-dimensional structure determination of biological macromolecules by electron cryo-microscopy. 3DEM is a key technique in structural, molecular and cell biology, and encompasses a wide range of biologically important structures from macromolecular assemblies and viruses, regular helical arrays and monolayer crystals of membrane proteins, to 3D imaging of whole cells or sections by electron tomography. The resolution achieved ranges from molecular in electron tomography to near-atomic in the case of regular arrays. Even with non-crystalline particles a resolution of 3Å, at which accurate molecular models can be built, is now within reach. Electron microscopy holds great promise for technical improvements that will widen its scope I biology even further. Significant advances in image contrast and signal/noise ratio are likely to result from advances in the design of new, sensitive electron detectors and devices such as phase plates and aberration-corrected lenses, which are now becoming available. Added to this, continuous improvements in image processing procedures used to calculate 3D volumes from projection images make it possible to classify and resolve different functional states of macromolecules. The 3DEM Gordon Research Conference has a distinguished record of bringing together pioneers in technology development and world-leading experts in the most advanced biological applications. In response to greatly increased demand, the conference is being held annually, with alternating meetings in New England and Europe. The next 3DEM GRC will be held on 15 - 20 June 2008 in Il Ciocco, Barga, Italy, in an pleasant hillside location in Northern Tuscany, within striking distance of the historic cities of Lucca, Pisa, and Florence. The program offers an attractive combination of lectures, poster sessions, workshops and free interaction time. Attendance will be limited to ~150 participants, early registration is recommended.

    Zhuhai, Guangdong China 519075

ISCA, International Surface Coating Association, was established in 2007. Thanks to the proposal of several companies evolving in the coating industry. The purpose was to set up an association in order to promote the coating industry in China and to develop partnerships between Chinese and foreign companies.

ISCA is a place for debate, exchange, information, etc. for everyone engaged in the field of coating? such as managers, engineers, trainers, universities, experts, associations, and so on.

More than 80 members, from China as well as Europe and North Africa, joined the association at the founding convention at Zhuhai. To improve mutual understanding, to develop partnership, to find new business opportunities, those are the ISCA purposes which the international vocation was clearly indicated in the name.

A Symposium is organized at Zhuhai, from July 27th to 29th, in order to gather all the members and to invite all the people involved in the coating industry who would like to attend it. The main topic is “Functional Coating Development and Application”.

If you are interested by that Symposium, don’t hesitate to send an email at Damien Debrand:
