- Information Structure
-
Jul 21, 2008 - Jul 26, 2008,
Korea University, Seoul, Seoul National Capital Area, South KoreaInformation Structure has been an increasingly lively research area in linguistics in recent years, an area for which approaches from different subfields of linguistics and different theoretical perspectives have been developed. It is understood as the structuring of information that responds to the immediate communicative needs of the interlocutors. This includes at least the following distinct types of structure:
* topic (the entity or set the utterance is about) vs. comment;
* focus (the part of an utterance or utterance meaning that is highlighted) vs. background, where a number of different uses of highlighting might be distinguished, like contrastive, corrective, or information focus as in answers to constituent questions;
* old information (parts of utterances that refer to semantic entities that have been mentioned before and are supposed to be present in the attention of the addressee) vs. new information;
* frame setting (delimiting the extend to which an utterance holds).
The workshop expects contributions concerning these information structuring devices with regards to:
* their expression in languages in prosody and writing, in morphology and syntax;
* their use in communication, e.g. in the answering of questions, in expressing contrasts, or in marking parallel structures;
* their use in contexts other than pure information structuring, e.g. the truth-conditional impact of topics, givenness, or focus, e.g. with focus-sensitive particles;
* their relevance for linguistic theory in general. - full details
- Formal Approaches to Tense, Aspect and Modality
-
Jul 21, 2008 - Jul 26, 2008,
Korea University, Seoul, Seoul National Capital Area, South KoreaThis workshop calls for papers that aim to address tense, aspect and modality of individual languages or in general linguistic terms from the following perspectives or approaches:
1) Comparative perspective: they have to address issues in tense, aspect and/or modality in at least two languages from a comparative perspective.
2) Inter-category interaction: they have to deal with the interrelationship between tense, aspect and/or modality, e.g. tense and aspect, aspect and modality, tense and modality.
3) Formal approaches: they have to take formal approaches to the problems. Papers in formal semantics, syntax, pragmatics, and discourse can be accepted, if they meet the requirements in (1) and (2). - full details
- Linguistic Studies of Ontology
-
Jul 21, 2008 - Jul 26, 2008,
Korea University, Seoul, Seoul National Capital Area, South KoreaThe workshop 'Linguistic Studies of Ontology: From Lexical Semantics to Formal Ontologies and Back' is part of the 18th International Congress of Linguists (CIL 18).
Recent developments in the study of ontology have important implications for cognitive science, knowledge engineering, and theoretical linguistics. In particular, research on lexical ontology deals with how concepts are lexicalized and organized across languages and cultures. This workshop aims to explore this new departure in linguistic studies by building upon the three important premises assumed in Fellbaum (1998), Schalley and Zaefferer (2007), and Huang et al. (2007): First, that lexicalized concepts have a special status in every language (as opposed to concepts that require complex coding), second that lexically coded concepts can be shared by different languages, and third that lexicalization universals are relevant for the construction of cross-lingually portable formal ontologies. - full details

- Fisheries Society of the British Isles International Symposium
-
Jul 21, 2008 - Jul 25, 2008,
Cardiff University, Cardiff, Wales, United KingdomParasites are increasingly recognised by biologists as important mediators of ecological interactions and agents of natural and sexual selection in host populations. Fish serve as hosts to a wide range of 'conventional' parasitic organisms (i.e. agents of disease such as viruses, fungi, lice and worms), and have proven to be extremely good models for testing key hypotheses in lab and field research. Furthermore, investment in courtship and parental behaviour risks parasitism by conspecifics that engage in 'sneaky' mating tactics. There is currently considerable interest in the impacts of both 'conventional' heterospecific parasites, and conspecific 'cuckoos' on the fitness of host individuals and the consequences of parasitism for populations and communities. This meeting addresses some of the most relevant and pressing research themes in fish parasitology, behaviour and evolutionary ecology.

- Evidence of Reading, Reading the Evidence 2008
-
Jul 21, 2008 - Jul 23, 2008,
Institute of English Studies, University of London London, England United KingdomStudies centred on the history of reading have proliferated in the last twenty years. They have sprung from several different disciplines, encompassed different periods and geographical locations and chosen divergent methodologies, but their common quest has been to recover and understand the traces of a practice which is central to our understanding of human history, yet notoriously elusive.
One such approach is ‘The Reading Experience Database 1450-1945' (RED), a project run by the Open University and the University of London . While RED is already proving its worth as a digital resource, its methodological parameters are necessarily limited and its vision therefore partial. What is needed in order for the study of the history of reading to progress beyond the boundaries of specific institutions, disciplines, methodologies, geographical locations and time periods is a forum in which as many diverse approaches as possible are brought into energetic debate. - full details
- Volatility in Foreign Exchange and Equity Markets
-
Jul 21, 2008 - Jul 22, 2008,
SingaporeThe foreign exchange and equity markets are in a dynamic environment that is constantly innovating and evolving. The main aspect of this course is to give a detailed description of how to practically realize pricing and hedging under different kinds of modeling of market volatility: constant, time-dependent, local, and stochastic, and to examine their differences and effects. In particular, in the case of stochastic volatility, the special emphasis is given to practical calculation of the risk premium due to the future possible market changes that cannot be predicted and hedged fully.
This extremely practical course will make use of live interactions with programs and trading tools set up to support in explaining and visually demonstrating certain areas, such as the importance of establishing fair volatility levels on day one and examining the various gamma/delta hedging tools on day two. The use of practical exercises, group discussions and Q&A sessions will allow you to effectively benefit by helping you to employ the techniques learnt and to address your business concerns over the two day workshop. - full details

- Cognitive Collaborative Appliances: From Theory to Praxis.
-
Jul 21, 2008 - Jul 22, 2008,
Patra, GreeceFrom cognitive ergonomics to intelligent assistants, cognitive robotics, and human-robots interaction there is a wide breadth of theories and techniques concerned with the development of intelligent artifacts that are able to exhibit helpful behavior to their (software and human) peers.
The ultimate objective is the development of systems that will act in a seamless and adaptive manner in the environment of the peers, serving their purpose with respect to the intentions, goals and restrictions of the peers, as any benevolent partner would do. We call such systems Cognitive Collaborative Appliances (CCA).
Cognitive Collaborative Appliances are systems that have an extended knowledge of the context in which they act including the knowledge about the tasks, goals, and constraints of their peers, as well as the ability to recognize situations, to learn and manage their plans, and to adapt, exhibiting helpful behavior.
Examples of such appliances include "cognitive TVs", which helps people locate the best TV programs that fit their mood and preferences, "cognitive wheel chairs", which helps people with severe limitations to reach a target location safely and according to their preferences, "cognitive PDAs", which helps the user to schedule her obligations that maybe complex and conflicting, and appliances for gaming and entertainment, which change the scenario based on the user's mood, abilities, and preferences.

- 4th International Conference on Metals and Genetics
-
Jul 21, 2008 - Jul 24, 2008,
Faculté de pharmacie Université Paris Descartes, Paris, Ile de France FranceNumerous biological functions depend on metals. Details of the genetic control of metal metabolism in plants and animals are being discovered. Recent advances in management of human diseases due to disordered metal metabolism have been ushered by discoveries of relevant genes and determining the effects of their mutations. Metals also play an important role in cancer biology, partly because metals interact with DNA and partly because metabolism of metals in cancerous cells presents treatment modalities. A new problem is that environmental contamination with natural or manmade metals poses serious health risks to populations. Recent advances in molecular biology, physics, proteomics, systems biology and clinical medicine further emphasize the delicate balance of metals in health and disease.
The first conference of this series, initiated by Professor Bibudhendra SARKAR at Toronto (Canada) in 1994, was carried out to uncover these relationships. In the next conference, the main topics will be as follows:
* Metal-associated diseases: Molecular and Systemic Biology approaches
* Metals in pharmaceutics and in nutrition
* Characterization and speciation of metal in proteins and biological tissues
* Metals and environmental health implications - full details
