Diffraction Methods In Structural Biology 2008
Jul 13, 2008 - Jul 18, 2008,
Bates College Lewiston, Maine United States

Structural Biology is a field which underpins our basic understanding of the molecular basis of disease, and hence of disease prevention. Diffraction of X-rays from crystalline samples is used to obtain accurate information on the three-dimensional structure of large biologically important molecules: this knowledge often allows the mechanisms of action of molecular pathways to be determined, and provides the potential to interfere with them if they have undesirable outcomes. The continuing development of experimental and computational methods is crucial to the successful application of the technique to increasingly complex biological systems.

This GRC seeks to cover the latest advances in all aspects of Diffraction Methods for Structural Biology. Sessions are planned on the experimental and computational aspects, future directions in synchrotron based macromolecular crystallography, challenging problems, pushing the boundaries of the technique, emerging technologies, complementary methods and imaging methods of the future.

Marine Microbes 2008
Jul 13, 2008 - Jul 18, 2008,
Il Ciocco, Lucca, Toscana Italy

Marine microbes are very abundant and diverse. They play significant roles in all element cycles, both quantitatively and qualitatively. However, they are little known, as the continuous series of surprising discoveries in the last few years shows. In the present conference the main focus will be on how these microbes interact: with other cells of their own species, with other microbes and with large living beings, from biofilms to symbiants. Another important topic will be the exploration of marine microbial diversity based on the recently developed sequencing approaches and on efforts to obtain marine organisms in pure cultures.

This conference will be the third in the Marine Microorganisms series. We hope it will contribute to enlarge the community of marine microbiologists and help in pointing the future directions of research even more than the two previous meetings.

Microbial Toxins & Pathogenicity 2008
Jul 13, 2008 - Jul 18, 2008,
Proctor Academy, Andover, New Hampshire United States

The Microbial Toxins and Pathogenicity Gordon Conference is an exceptional forum for learning about the newest knowledge in the field of microbial pathogenesis. The focus is on basic mechanisms, primarily from bacterial systems that exemplify common themes in toxin biochemistry and biogenesis, molecular and cellular pathogenesis, and infection and immunity. New research on translating knowledge of basic mechanisms into therapeutic advances will also be presented. Speakers include established leaders in the field as well as young investigators of exceptional promise. Sessions are chaired by prominent researchers who broadly review the topic and place the speakers' work into that context. Discussions led by the session chair are lively exchanges of new ideas and perspectives stimulated by each talk. In addition to the plenary sessions, this meeting includes well-attended and highly interactive poster sessions. In 2008, the main conference will be preceded by the Gordon-Kenan Graduate Research Seminar on Microbial Toxins and Pathogenicity. This weekend meeting, planned by and for post-doctoral and pre-doctoral trainees in the field of microbial pathogenesis, will provide an opportunity for future leaders in the field to present their work as talks and posters in a collegial and interactive environment. Attendance at the Graduate Research Seminar will add great value to the overall GRC experience for these young investigators.

Plasma Processing Science
Jul 13, 2008 - Jul 18, 2008,
Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts United States

The conference, including invited speakers and contributed poster, will feature the latest developments in plasma processing science and applications of science and industry related to both thermal and non-thermal plasmas. New areas have already emerged with “dusty plasmas” now being used to create materials and build devices for nanotechnology, and plasma-controlled aerodynamics with the development of atmospheric discharges. Hydrogen production, biomass conversion, fuel cell technology are among the domains where plasmas technologies are improving every day. Use of plasmas in biology and medicine is set to “explode” in the coming years and will be exploited in surgery, skin or disease treatments as well as for decontamination and sterilization. The production and applications of plasmas in liquids is probably one of the most exciting emerging areas of plasma technology in the coming years.
