- International Medieval Congress - IMC 2008
-
Jul 7, 2008 - Jul 10, 2008,
University of Leeds Leeds, England United KingdomInterest in (and concern for) the natural environment is not simply a modern phenomenon. Human identities are defined by their relationship with their natural environment, and human lives depend on natural resources. In medieval Europe , the discourse about the natural world was dominated by the Christian religion. However, its foundation was much broader, encompassing a rich and highly varied inheritance from antiquity, including classical natural philosophy, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian religious thought, as well as pagan and vernacular traditions which formed the basis for the development of new European attitudes towards nature. In medieval theology, philosophy, art and literature landscapes such as deserts and wildernesses conveyed meanings, and so did the animals, real or imaginary, that populated them.

- Bio-fuels: Specifications and Performance Symposium
-
Jul 7, 2008 - Jul 9, 2008,
Palais des Congres, Paris, Ile de France FranceThere is a growing abundance of global conferences and symposia on bio fuels simply because of the political and legislative pressures to encourage the use of these alternatives. This has been brought on by the wake of continuing high oil prices, the growing insecurity of crude oil and petroleum based fuels, and increasing concerns about road transport's contribution to global warming. However, virtually all of these conferences neglect the in-depth issues of global fuel specifications and how these affect the performance of future fuels in the vehicles in the market place. This symposium will be unique for it will be organized in support of the needs of the motor industry and its alliances with representation from the U.S., Europe and Asia. All will address the question, "how will rapid growth in global bio fuels affect the global specifications and performance of future fuels?"

- Mobimedia 2008 - 4th International Mobile Multimedia Communications Conference
-
Jul 7, 2008 - Jul 9, 2008,
Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), Kaitoväylä 1 Oulu, Oulu Finland 90571The development and deployment of the multimedia services and applications in mobile environments requires adopting an interdisciplinary approach where both multimedia and networking issues are addressed jointly. Different type of semantic characteristics of media, human interpretation of audiovisual information, coding standards and interaction with networking, mobility and security protocols are research issues that need to be carefully examined when proposing new solutions.
The efficient delivery and deployment of multimedia applications and services over emerging diverse and heterogeneous wireless networks is a challenging research objective. The research efforts e.g. for the 3G/4G and 3G LTE visions of interworking among heterogeneous technologies to achieve multimedia session continuity, retain multimedia QoS characteristics etc., amplifies the need to evaluate the conditions and restrictions under which delivery of such services can be accomplished. The demand for efficient multimedia communications can be also seen as one of main driving forces towards the Future Internet and Post-IP solutions. The interoperability of applications, transport and network protocols and radio access, as well as the demand for improved quality of service and user experience, security and mobility support creates a challenging study field and also possibilities for research of novel communication protocols and methods towards the Future Internet.
In addition for the technical challenges caused by the increased amount of multimedia usage and delivery through different community services, peer-to-peer networks, Web, Internet IPTV etc. the multimedia delivery is also affecting to industry value chains, commerce transactions between businesses (B2B), and business and customers (B2C). Within this scope, MobiMedia is intended to provide a unique international forum for researchers from industry and academia, working in multimedia coding and mobile networking fields to study new applications, solutions, and standards. - full details

- Critical Methods Conference 2008
-
Jul 7, 2008 - Jul 8, 2008,
Rhodes University Grahamstown, Eastern Cape South AfricaThings are grim. Rumours and tales circulate that “the times they are a-changin’”, and not in the hopeful ways that Dylan called forth during days of humanist euphoria. Rather there are shifts afield. Weather patterns are changing, water is drying up in some places whilst they flood in other spaces, storms are on the up. The decadence of the west (or of those that ‘have’ in this west) continues unhindered. The US Empire proceeds with its rhetoric as it continues its “might makes right” strategy. Everywhere we are consumers and products for consumption, seeking escape in virtual playgrounds and reality game shows. Closer to home, Zimbabwe’s regime resorts to colonial rhetoric to justify its oppression and Africa struggles with how to respond. Whilst at home we grapple with rape, HIV/Aids, and the ANC’s neo-liberal elitism, of which violent crime, corruption and poverty are more and more clearly symptoms. Disabling environments abound.
So whence critical methods in such dark days? Is it too late for theory and paradigms? Were these mere substitutes for action – an intellectual pastime that calmed our nerves and allayed our guilt?
Or is there space to renew our struggles to effectively and courageously speak or, rather, enact truth to power? Is the above a narrative that ignores the signs of hope amongst the multitude; the turn to the left in South America, the actions of thousands of activists, the protests in the US, the renewed struggles in South African townships, the everyday lives of women, the poor, the disabled as they demonstrate their agency in a world stacked against them? Is it a stance that aligns with contemporary middle-class cynicism, turning the end of days into another commodity for capitalism to exploit?
This conference asks for a turn to such questions. It calls for action, a renewal of networks, a recognition of what is working and of what exists. Papers, conversation sessions, posters, dramatic/aesthetic pieces and debates in a range of areas relating to critical endeavours and critical methods are welcomed. - full details

- Project Management 101: 15 Steps to Project Management Success (Webinar)
-
Jul 7, 2008 - Jul 11, 2008,
Project Management is a systematic process and must be understood before one can effectively lead a project team and manage projects effectively. Technical competence and good intentions are not enough to finish a project on time, within budget and satisfying customer requirements. Projects need to be well defined, systematically planned, diligently managed during execution and effectively closed out to ensure customer satisfaction and build on our existing knowledge base.
Whether it is for work or home, every day you are managing some type of project. Each of these projects is different in scope, schedule and budget, but for each you have a similar end goal, success! This five day, webinar will teach you how to successfully execute a project from start to finish. - full details

- 14th Biennial National Atomic Spectroscopy Symposium (BNASS 2008)
-
Jul 7, 2008 - Jul 9, 2008,
University of Sussex, Brighton, England, United KingdomAs always, the aims of BNASS are to promote and encourage developments in both fundamental and applied atomic spectroscopy by providing a friendly environment where delegates can meet, formally and informally, to exchange results, views and ideas. Plenary lectures, given by world-renowned experts, provide overviews of important areas of atomic spectroscopy. Invited and submitted lectures, as well as posters, cover the most recent developments in the field.
The participation of young scientists is an important part of every BNASS and in the past we have enjoyed excellent presentations from graduate researchers and young scientists. In fact, many of today's senior figures gave their first conference lectures at a BNASS. To help maintain this tradition, the organising committee is proud to offer a limited number of student bursaries to assist with the costs of attending.
A wide variety of topics are covered including AA, AE, AF, ICP, MS, XRF, GD, new sources, sample preparation, sample introduction, isotope analysis using MC-ICP-MS, elemental speciation, standard reference materials, laser ablation, and data handling. All aspects of atomic spectroscopy are encouraged. - full details
