The Design Annual 2008
Jul 4, 2008 - Jul 7, 2008,
Frankfurt Festhalle Frankfurt am Main, Hessen Germany

The lot of design today is not an easy one. The public approach to it has increasingly caused the term design to deteriorate into a lifestyle term. The problem, evidently, is that to date there has been no theoretical basis and no culturally-anchored value and evaluation system for design. In contrast with associated disciplines such as architecture, art and fashion, design has been denied its independence. The definitions essentially verge on meaningless marketing jargon usually to the detriment of content, precision and a precise use of words. To do justice to the claim and meaning of the discipline design, it is important to present the history, values and content of the products. Only in this way can a reference system develop I the long term, in which design can be adequately discussed. The alignment in terms of content of 'private identity' demonstrates clearly that it addresses questions that are of relevance to the whole of society. The discussion touches on cultural processes and developments in the present day, on design as a creative discipline.

Historicising the Middlebrow
Jul 4, 2008 - Jul 4, 2008,
University of Sheffield Sheffield, South Yorkshire United Kingdom

The term 'middlebrow' emerged in the mid-1920s to describe dismissively the extensive area of cultural production which situated itself between high modernism and popular culture. The category was particularly associated with novels, but was also used to label certain types of broadcasting, cinema, periodical, music and interior decoration. The 'middlebrow' prompted hostility and fierce debate, both at the time and subsequently, and the underlying concept of different 'brows' has been a resilient one.

This conference seeks to historicise and contextualise 'middlebrow' by exploring the formation and consolidation of cultural hierarchies in nineteenth and twentieth-century Britain and America. How, when and why were these hierarchies established? What impact did shifts in production, dissemination and marketing have on the construction of cultural taxonomies?

Public Private Partership Summit 2008
Jul 4, 2008 - Jul 4, 2008,
Shangri-La Hotel, New Delhi, Delhi India

It has been well documented that Life Sciences Research is a lengthy, complex and expensive process. There is increasing pressure on pharmaceutical and biotech companies to reduce costs and time lines for product development. The dwindling product pipelines have added to the pressure and have forced companies to look for alternate strategies. Also, due to the recent trend of globalization and need to innovate, Indian pharmaceutical companies have felt the need to move up the value chain from manufacturing generics to novel compounds. But due to their small size most Indian companies are unable to take up the risky resource intensive drug discovery and development activities.

To help leverage the opportunities presented by cooperation between public bodies and private industry, Frost & Sullivan is organizing a one-day event on PPP with the intention of stimulating more such partnerships in the Life Sciences domain. This event will bring together on one common platform the different stake holders in PPP, that is, the Academia, Industry and Government representatives to highlight some of the success stories in the PPP space and also to address some of the issues that have prevented the optimal usage of the PPP concept. The main theme of the event is focused on various successful models in R&D, manufacturing and in life sciences infrastructure development.

In order to highlight the opportunities in the Life Sciences Sector ushered by public private partnership and to provide the best possible networking platform, Frost & Sullivan is pleased to present one day executive summit titled, 'Nurturing Public Private Partnership in the Life Sciences Sector in India' scheduled to be held on 4th July, 2008 at the Shangri-La Hotel, New Delhi'
