The 10th International Symposium on Landslides and Engineered Slopes will be held from June 30 to July 4, 2008 in Xi'an China. The symposium is one of the most important activities of the Joint Technical Committee on Landslides and Engineered Slopes (JTC1) under the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and International Association on Engineering Geology (IAEG).

The Symposium will be jointly organized by the three Chinese national sister societies, and the Geotechical Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

Call for papers
Proposals are invited for papers presenting new scholarship concerning Robert Louis Stevenson, with papers on Stevenson and European culture especially welcome, though the conference hopes to cover the whole range of Stevenson studies.
Those interested should send an abstract (name and contact details on page one, followed by a second page with the title but no author's name and an astract of about 500 words) by 1 October 2007.
Acceptance (based on judgement of the proposals by the scientific committee) will be notified by 15 December 2007. A selection of papers will be published in 2009.

International Scientific Conference "100 Years of the Tunguska Event"

On the 30th of June 1908 a large airblast occurred in the Siberian taiga, near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River that became widely known as "Tunguska Event". Environmental effects of the explosion were observed almost in the whole northern hemisphere and many traces of the impact are still well preserved in the epicenter area. In spite of all the efforts of several generations of scientists from different disciplines and from many countries, there is still no complete and comprehensive explanation of the Event.

In commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Tunguska Impact, the International Conference "100 years of the Tunguska Event" will be held in Krasnoyarsk, Russia on June 30 - July 6, 2008.

The programme of the anniversary events will consist of several parts: associated scientific conferences in Tomsk on May 1-3 and in Moscow on June 26-28, the main scientific conference in Krasnoyarsk on June 30 - July 2, a field trip to the site of the impact on July 3-7 and the 50th Jubilee Complex Initiative Expedition (July-August of 2008).

This course will introduce the field of chemical biology to professional chemists, particularly those working in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, fine chemical, biophysical chemistry and agrochemical sectors.

The aim of this course is to introduce the key techniques and methodologies of chemical biology to practising organic chemists. The course will build on familiar chemical concepts, allowing the delegates to get to grips with the fundamentals and tools of chemical biology.

We have assembled a team of tutors, largely from the highly interdisciplinary Astbury Centre at Leeds, with research excellence in synthesis, protein and nucleic acid science, and biophysical methods. Many of the tutors have first hand experience of teaching the first taught MSc degree in chemical biology in the UK. This course will introduce a range of topics in the emerging field of chemical biology: the synthesis of biologically active molecules, the characterisation of their complexes, and the use of chemical tools to study biological problems.

CRONEM's 2008 conference will address issues bound up with nationalism, ethnicity and citizenship from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Multicultural societies raise crucial challenges for traditional conceptions of nations and citizenship. Ethnic diversity can mean that significant numbers of people are excluded from national projects, while the 'melting pot' metaphor belies the complexities of societies in which minority communities seek to protect their heritages and resist incorporation into the nation or state.

At the same time, conceptions of citizenship appear to be undergoing transformation. Civic engagement and participation is frequently viewed as being more effective in achieving social change than traditional forms of political representation. Levels of both civic and political participation vary significantly across ethnic communities, while political institutions are required to adjust to accommodate marginalised communities more effectively into democratic processes.

At the international level, the sovereignty of the nation state has been increasingly challenged in the name of protecting or asserting universal human rights. Regimes, deemed oppressive by powerful external actors, have been subjected to sanctions or military intervention. The question of national citizenship, with its attendant rights and obligations, is being reframed in the light of new expectations. The implications of this process for the future of states and their citizens remain unclear, but they appear to encourage the erosion of national sovereignty in favour of participation at both sub-national and international levels.
