Advances in Marine Ecosystem Modelling Research Symposium

Following on from the success of AMEMR 2005, the Plymouth Marine Laboratory is proud to announce that the second Advances in Marine Ecosystem Modelling Symposium is scheduled to be held in Plymouth in June 2008.

Modelling provides a key scientific technique by which we can elucidate the workings of the marine system and predict its evolution in both the short and long term. The symposium is being convened as a forum for presentation and discussion of all aspects of model based marine ecosystem research, encompassing numerical, conceptual, mathematical and statistical approaches. We are particularly keen that this symposium will contribute to the next generation of model based exploration by providing scientists and students an opportunity to discuss and contrast recent advances, outstanding problems and future requirements.

The symposium will be run in plenary session with keynote speakers providing summaries and challenges to selected topics. Contributed papers will be 15 - 20 minutes in length including discussion. Posters will be displayed through out the meeting and will be the subject of a dedicated session.

IMEHA 5th International Congress of Maritime History

The TSR focuses on radar technology applied to military and homeland security problems. The group considers ground, aircraft and UAV, missile, space, urban operations, and shipboard platform applications. Spectacular discoveries regarding the nature and origin of the Universe continue to flow from the advanced technology of ground and space-based telescopes and instrumentation. Scientific synergy has also existed for many years between ground and space such as the use of 8-10 m class ground-based telescopes for spectroscopy of distant galaxies discovered in Hubble Space Telescope images. Further progress is anticipated in this area when the more powerful JWST will complement the next generation of Extremely Large Ground-based Telescopes now being designed around the world. Most examples of scientific synergy arise naturally due to the demands of addressing specific scientific questions.
There is a growing realization, however, that optimization of resources actually requires agreement on long term research goals and the selection and development of the appropriate complementary ground and space facilities, which commonly require a decade or more to bring to fruition. The US Decadal Survey is an example of this cooperation, and for the first time, a similar European-wide Science and Infrastructure Vision is being developed in collaboration between scientists and funding agencies. Synergy is thus a particularly apt theme for this symposium in France. Given the wide scope of this symposium it is also appropriate to consider other areas where synergies may be encouraged beyond the purely scientific, such as the development of enabling technologies, addressing the challenges of systems engineering, managing large, long term projects and adequately funding them over the development and operational lifecycles.

Any autonomic or organic system must be trustworthy to avoid the risk of losing control and retain confidence that the system will not fail. Trust and/or distrust relationships in the Internet and in pervasive infrastructures are key factors to enable dynamic interaction and cooperation of various users, systems and services. Trusted/Trustworthy Computing (TC) aims at making computing and communication systems as well as services available, predictable, traceable, controllable, assessable, sustainable, dependable, persist-able, security/privacy protect-able, etc.

A series of grand challenges exist to achieve practical self-manageable autonomic systems with truly trustworthy services. ATC-08 addresses the most innovative research and development in these challenging areas and includes all technical aspects related to autonomic/organic computing (AC/OC) and trusted computing (TC). ATC-08 is a successor of the First Int'l Workshop on Trusted and Autonomic Ubiquitous and Embedded Systems (TAUES-05, Japan), the Int'l Workshop on Trusted and Autonomic Computing Systems (TACS-06, Austria), the 3rd International Conference on Autonomic and Trusted Computing (ATC-06, China), and the 4th International Conference on Autonomic and Trusted Computing (ATC-07, Hong Kong).

The First American Dendrochronology Conference - AmeriDendro 2008 - is intended for academics, scientists, students, and managers interested in tree-ring research and its application in climatology, environmental sciences, archaeology, geology, resource management, conservation, policy, and society. The primary focus of the conference is on tree-ring research in North and South America, but studies from other areas of the world are encouraged. The 2008 meeting will be the first of a series of AmeriDendro Meetings, which are scheduled to be held every fourth year opposite the four-year rotation of the International Dendrochronological Congresses (the next one of which will be held in Finland in 2010).
