Barriers Of The CNS 2008
Jun 22, 2008 - Jun 27, 2008,
Tilton School, Tilton, New Hampshire United States

The goal of this GRC conference is to increase our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms associated with the blood brain barrier (BBB)/neurovascular unit (NVU) in health and disease. One of the focuses of this meeting is to understand why the BBB excludes important therapeutics from entering the brain of people afflicted with diseases of the CNS. The issue of CNS disease states and the role the BBB/NVU plays in these disease states is the central theme of our meeting. The Gordon Research Conference on Barriers of the CNS is unique because it brings together (equally) both clinical and basic science researches in a format where full and open exchange occurs on subjects important to the patient. It is to our mutual benefit that clinical and basic scientists work together to solve the long term problem associated with an inability to treat CNS disease states because of our paucity of knowledge about the BBB/NVU. The meeting program will have two keynote addresses and eight sessions that address current issues in (among others) BBB Tight Junctions and Barrier Regulation, BBB Transporters and Barrier Functions, Choroid plexus/Blood-CSF Barrier in health and disease, Barriers in the developing brain, BBB/NVU imaging, retinal-, spinal-, and tumor barriers, BBB/NVU in stroke, BBB/NVU in Alzheimer’s disease, and in inflammation. The health relatedness of this conference is very exciting. Discussions at this GRC will map the future for defining how to understand CNS disease states and the BBB/NVU and discuss why several CNS therapeutics have been unsuccessful to date. Since the number of attendees is limited by the meeting facility early registration on the GRC web site is advised.

Jun 22, 2008 - Jun 27, 2008,
Holderness School, Plymouth, New Hampshire United States

This conference will focus on the ‘big issues’ surrounding aquatic sciences in the coming decades, and on the challenges and solutions to these issues. The conference will take a broader perspective rather than focus on just one or two issues, and will cover the continuum of basic through applied science and engineering. The presentations and discussion will emphasize aquatic processes and systems - physical, chemical, and biological - that are the underpinnings to understanding any one contaminant or issue. Sessions will include: (1) ‘core’ aquatic science topics, such as photochemistry, biotransformation processes, interfacial processes, and bioaccumulation; (2) topics of interest that interface with aquatic science, such as energy impacts on water quality and quantity, global climate change and its impact on water quality, international water issues, and contaminant cycles; (3) emerging issues in aquatic sciences, including the use of proteomics and genomics for source tracking and toxicity assessment, the use of sensor networks, new technologies for water treatment, and how to better forecast future contaminant problems; and (4) strategies for interfacing aquatic science research with environmental decision-making and policy.

Lysosomes & Endocytosis 2008
Jun 22, 2008 - Jun 27, 2008,
Proctor Academy, Andover, New Hampshire United States

The Gordon Conference on Lysosomes and Endocytosis covers recent advances in our understanding of the ways in which the endocytic pathway and lysosomes function. Both the endocytic pathway and the lysosome play important roles in the physiology of cells and organisms. Many inherited and somatic diseases result from defects in lysosomal and endocytic pathways; many pathogens are destroyed by this pathway while others subvert the endocytic pathway or lysosomal function during infection. More recent developments reveal that endocytic organelles play critical roles in development, signaling, cytokinesis and secretion.

The 2008 meeting has a list of confirmed speakers and discussion leaders, shown below, encompassing the latest advances of endocytosis in membrane traffic, signaling, disease, pathogen invasion defence, and developmental biology. We have also introduced a new session on 'New Directions' in which all 4 speakers will be selected from submitted abstracts and will provide a forum for recent developments in new areas in the field.

Symposium on New Developments in Test Methods for Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC)
Jun 22, 2008 - Jun 22, 2008,
Hyatt Regency Denver at Convention Center Denver, Colorado United States

The lack of appropriate test methods to assess the suitability of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) mixtures is often cited as one of the key factors inhibiting more rapid growth of this technology for concrete construction. Subcommittee C09.47 on SCC has recently established three methods to begin addressing this critical need:

C 1610/C 1610M-06a - Static Segregation of Self-Consolidating Concrete Using Column Technique
C 1611/C 1611M-05 - Slump Flow of Self-Consolidating Concrete
C 1621/C 1621M-06 - Passing Ability of Self-Consolidating Concrete by J-Ring

The purpose of this symposium is to provide a forum for users of these methods as well as other procedures to understand the applicability and success these methods have had in facilitating the production and placement of SCC mixtures, as well helping to predict the uniformity of the in-place concrete.

The aim of this conference is to explore the connections, commonalities and differences between Antisemitism and Islamophobia in Europe through a broad geographical and historical lens.

Papers will focus on contemporary and historical flashpoints, such as Britain, Germany, France, Iberia, Austria, Russia, the Balkans, and the Netherlands. In addition to 'national' case studies, the conference will attempt to gain a broad 'European', transnational perspective on this complex question or will at least consider whether such a thing can or should be attempted.

Given the acute relevance of the subject today, we aim to give equal attention to contemporary as well as historical research. At the same time, however, the importance of looking at Antisemitism/Islamophobia in the longue durée is critical, and papers will be included that go back to the medieval period.

16th Annual Model Schools Conference
Jun 22, 2008 - Jun 25, 2008,
Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort Orlando, Florida United States

Once every year, thousands of America's school administrators, teachers, parents, business leaders, and policymakers join together at one event for ideas and inspiration that place our children first. It’s the nation’s premier conference on K-12 education reform.

The Model Schools Conference is the International Center’s signature event. It brings all the components of our work together at one time in support of our basic mission: a rigorous and relevant education for all students.
The 16th Annual Model Schools Conference will showcase:

  • High schools, middle grades programs, and elementary schools that are highly successful at providing every student with a rigorous and relevant education. Identifying and analyzing the high schools are part of a major joint initiative of the International Center for Leadership in Education and the Council of Chief State School Officers, with financial support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • Instructional practices and leadership approaches that lead to dramatic improvement in student performance.
  • Cutting-edge research on best practices and skills and knowledge needed for success in technological, information-based society.
  • Student engagement strategies used by high performing schools.
  • Measurable learning criteria that schools can use to evaluate how well they are doing in meeting their goals on an ongoing basis.
  • Keynote and feature presentations by national education leaders, including Bill Daggett, Larry Gloeckler, Louis Martinez, Ray McNulty, Paul Nussbaum, Russ Quaglia, Harry Wong, and others.
