- FIG XXXI General Assembly and Working Week
-
Jun 14, 2008 - Jun 19, 2008,
Stockholm City Conference Centre, Stockholm SwedenThe theme of the Working Week “Integrating Generations” fits well to the over all theme of the current Council “Building the Capacity”. The technical programme will include all our ten commissions with special focus on land and tenure issues. According to the new conference structure the FIG Working Week 2008 will be a major conference organised together with a partner organisation. This time we are happy to have UN-Habitat as the partner. Together with UN-Habitat FIG will organise a Seminar on Slum Upgrading and the Importance of Financial Mechanisms. This is an issue placed very high at the global agenda in support of the Millennium Development Goals. This seminar will be a fully integrated part of the technical programme. We are happy to continue the long-term co-operation between FIG and the United Nations especially in Stockholm as Sweden has a long tradition in organising and supporting such international events.

- International Conference on Communication and Media 2008 (i-COME'08)
-
Jun 14, 2008 - Jun 16, 2008,
Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, MalaysiaOn behalf of the organizing committee, we cordially inviting the world to our 1st iCOME ‘08. This is indeed an exciting global conference at the heart of Southeast Asia organized by our Faculty. This conference will surely inspire creative ideas and promise countless opportunities related to the general tracks of communication and media. Come, and be counted in this truly memorable gathering of distinguished scholars and fine researchers. Hope to see you in 2008!
Recent demands in the work environment, changes in lifestyles, challenges in socio-economic and political agenda, issues in cultural integration, planned revamps in educational systems, corporate restructuring, and business and management re-engineering, to name a few, are exerting socio-cultural pressures on the roles of communication and media in handling these types of scenario.
How can communication and media theories, philosophies, and principles offer comprehensive explanations and strategies on how to deal with the ever changing management, work, and career environments? What mechanisms can be put into action by practitioners, academicians, and researchers, and scholars as a response to the seemingly complicated and challenging ambits of communication and media studies? How can communication and media experts play significant and multi-faceted roles in decision-making, policy-making, information dissemination, and information literacy? - full details

- Nanotechnology for Sustainable Energy
-
Jun 14, 2008 - Jun 19, 2008,
Universitätszentrum Obergurgl, Otz Valley, Solden AustriaMaybe the largest challenge for our global society is to find ways to replace the slowly, but inevitably vanishing fossil fuel supply, and at the same time avoiding negative effects from the current energy system on climate, environment and health. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (N&N) can contribute to a positive development in this direction in several ways, for instance by contributing to more efficient harvesting of sun light, by providing thermoelectric materials to harvest energy from temperature gradients, by providing energy storage technology e.g. in batteries and for hydrogen storage, by enabling light-weight materials for transportation, by influencing the energy efficiency of industrial production and of household energy use (e.g., through fuel cells, catalysis, reduced friction losses), and by offering schemes to clean up harmful emissions resulting from various energy systems.
Topical areas covered by this conference are those where N&N will, or may, have an impact on the development of a sustainable energy system, including environmental aspects. The conference includes both basic science of relevance for energy/environmental technology and more application oriented research. The objective is to gather experts in the respective fields at one conference, with the aim to make both an inventory and exposure of the state-of-the-art N&N based energy research, technologies and opportunities. We thereby hope to foster scientific excellence in this area, to identify synergies between disciplines and people, and to catalyze global contacts and collaborations among world-leading experts and laboratories. The conference has a strong educational character in as much as it shall provide a younger generation of researchers with a vision, as well as the knowledge and tools to realize this vision.
The format of this conference follows the scheme of other research conferences organized by the European Science Foundation (ESF), i.e. there is a strong focus on scientific quality of the talks and on generous time for discussions and social interactions. This is achieved by complementing 20-25 invited talks by distinguished speakers/scientists with poster-sessions and a few young investigator talks. Joint meals and a social programme enable further opportunities for contact and informal networking. The conference venue is located in the beautiful Austrian alps (Universitätszentrum Obergurgl, Ötztal).

- Plant-Associated Microbe Gene Ontology (PAMGO) Training Workshop
-
Jun 14, 2008 - Jun 16, 2008,
Virginia Tech Blacksburg, Virginia United StatesPlant-associated microbes have evolved similar mechanisms to evade, neutralize or suppress defense systems of their plant hosts and obtain nutrients. Such similarities can only be discovered if a controlled vocabulary is set in place to describe these processes amongst diverse microbe-host interactions. The PAMGO interest group was formed to develop new gene ontology (GO) terms describing the various processes, functions and cellular components related to microbe-host interactions.
The PAMGO Training Workshop will provide two days of lectures on genome annotation, including how to evaluate the reliability of gene models produced by gene prediction software, how to evaluate functional predictions produced by annotation software, what are the Gene Ontology and PAMGO,how to use the Gene Ontology to accurately describe the functions of gene products. A third day will be devoted to hands-on experience in annotation of genes involved in host-associated microbes. Examples for annotation will be chosen based on the interests of the participants. The workshop will be valuable to researchers working in animal-microbe interactions as well as plant-microbe interactions. - full details
- Heart Failure 2008 Congress
-
Jun 14, 2008 - Jun 17, 2008,
Milano Convention Centre, Via Gattamelata 5, Milan, Lombardia ItalyThe Heart Failure Congress, the annual meeting of the Heart Failure Association of the ESC, is dedicated to all professionals interested in the broad spectrum of problems relating to heart failure.
The Mission of the Heart Failure Association of the ESC is "To improve quality of life and longevity, through better prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart failure, including the establishment of networks for its management, education and research."
Despite impressive advances in our knowledge of its mechanisms and treatment, heart failure remains one of the most challenging diseases both for basic research and clinical practice. Improved treatment of most cardiovascular diseases and increased longevity are causing a steady increase in the number of persons affected by this syndrome. Heart failure remains associated with poor quality of life, frequent hospitalizations and, ultimately, a high mortality. To date, it is the most important cause of hospitalizations in patients over 65 in Western countries and it is associated with a higher mortality rate than most malignancies. Its high prevalence and poor prognosis make it a major cause of expense and use of health care resources. - full details

- 13th Annual Live Cell Microscopy Course
-
Jun 14, 2008 - Jun 26, 2008,
UBC Medical School Vancouver, British Columbia CanadaThe UBC 3D Live-cell Course is a very ambitious undertaking. Year after year, the companies manufacturing the equipment used in this field have been unstinting in their support of this Course and have provided the students who attend with an unequalled introduction to this field. It costs them each between $10,000 and $30,000 per year to do this!
Fortunately, our students and faculty are unequalled too! The Organizers and the Students are both mindful of this tremendous support and extremely grateful for it. - full details
